tweaking shadows etc - how?

My 1070 just doesn't quite have the grunt to run ED at 1.25 at a consistent 75 FPS e.g. when I look at complex scenes in shadows like the alien site.

I can't remember what .xml settings to tweak and which ones people think make the difference.

Any ideas?

What shadow setting are you using?

Low or medium is probably appropriate on a 1070.

Blur and Depth of Field can be turned off without any real effect on visual quality in VR. Bloom can be set to medium or off.
And Ambient Occlusion can be set to Low or Medium to help offset the burden of 1.25x HMD Quality (or 1.25x Supersampling, you didn't specify which)
