Type 6 - To boldly go

Hello Chaps

I've been following this thread for a while, some superb new explorer info here. Decided I may have to join in, even though I'm not flying the pre-requisite ship. She was a hauler in a former life though...

Welcome aboard Rikk, all explorer's welcome.

I always find the exploration threads are the best ones to follow as the're almost always polite, cordial and helpful.

Here's another selfie from the North America Nebula:

I'm starting to wind my way towards the Elephants Trunk Nebula. When I get close to the "tourist spots" I tend to come across systems where people have just scanned the main star and/or a couple of planets so I've been doing a little "cleaning up" and filling in the blanks by scanning the rest of the system, some people have missed some interesting planets just doing a cursory scan, but I'm not in any kind of hurray, I might even stay out here until after the next update.

To reduce the chance of hitting too many previously scanned system as I go from one tourist spot to another I've started taking a 90deg tangent away from my next target for 100-200 light years before turning toward it, seems to work quite well.

Hey just thought i'd check in it's currently 3:17am UK time and i did a rough 500 ly run out into the unknown and then flew back home ( direction i went in was a bad choice ) as i would have ended up know where no pun intended :D but it was a very nice experience, found a lot of undiscovered planets ( nice to get credit for finding them ) and on my return made a nice 2M Cr from the journey, it's time to catch some shut eye but i have already plotted my next journey this time to the center of the galaxy.

Welcome to the explorers gang Rikk. I don't know what it is about us explorers. But you will find us to be friendlies of all groups here in ED. Must have something to do with spending weeks at a time in deep space, never seeing anybody, being all lonesome, so we have to reach out and have big group hugs here on the forums:D

As the others said... everyone is welcome ! Always nice to hear the storys.

Fly safe and have fun. Not of interesst what ship your flying as long as you have fun !

With the amount of gaming time open to you, do you have any idea when you will be there? I'm about to start out on another Sidewinder Odyssey and hope to be there in about four -five weeks, so long as I can avoid 'bouncing' off stars this time!

Best answer is no, i'm making the most of my time off from work atm but i'll eventually get there and hopefully back in one piece.

Well I've started my next journey into the unknown

Let's see if i run into any Cmdr's on my journey, just the first 1000 Ly plan to the middle of the galaxy.

I'm hoping to make enough from rares tonight to buy an Asp fully kit it as I want for my next wander into the dark. Will stay out there till I damage forces me to return home. That could be a day though....

Hopefully not though, hehehe :D

After my last successful mission I was able to buy and (almost) fully upgrade an Asp... but if I go out into the deep black again, I'll be going back to my T6.

But once there are threats out there (like Thargoids?) Yeah, you can bet I'll take the Asp instead ;)

Butr you never know they could suprise us with another alien race. And who first to meet them but an explorer. Before you know it they could be probing you, a-a-a-h-h

All the more reason to have an Asp on backup. I can just picture myself making first contact in a T6 and having to high tail it out of an unknowns system... then coming back with firepower ;)

Will be going out tonight myself in my Explorer T6, for a extended sortie, going to try and do a round the outter Galaxy job. According to PrimeNine , it`s a 340k LY around the outer most of the Galaxy.

Oh that's ok then if it's only 340k LY around the galaxy

Twice round and then back home for tea

So i´m around 1300 Ly out of Sol... What did i found ? A strong signal source. And 8 ships fighting each other. A few were FDL and Phythons. Not cool FD...

I have found USS as well, over 600LY from Pand, which I found to be weird and unsettling. I popped into a SSS in case I might meet Thargoids, found 2 NPC wings of FDLs and Vultures warring. As I was weaponless, I ran for the exit!

does everyone scan everything when jumping from system to system?

i know I've only just started but i'm currently 290ly away from home as I've been scanning every time i enter a system.

I honk with the Advanced scanner on arrival and always scan the closest star. I then check the System Map to see what's there and whether it's been marked "Discovered" already.
Generally speaking, if I'm feeling leisurely:
- Tag any star close enough to scan without me moving
- If there's metal worlds, I'll scan all of those
- SKIP scanning asteroids, they're not worth anything
- Scan all possible life-bearing or terraformable worlds (know by color on map)
- Scan any Jovians, especially those with ring systems or pretty colors (ammonia or water-based life)
- If any "undiscovered" moons, scan them all to earn first discovery bonus - worthwhile after 1.2.04 exploration buff
- Stars/planets over 10k LS away, scan only if earnings-to-time-spent makes sense.

If in a hurry to get somewhere, I'll honk and run unless I see obvious earthlike/waterworlds/black holes/neutron stars. Not worth as much money but you'll cover more ground and get more systems' data per hour.

My mnemonic regarding stellar types is TTYL .. systems with these types are unscoopable, probably have nothing worth more than a honk of the horn, on to the next one!

Since this is my second journey im doing as you have stated above, found loads of undiscovered areas so far, furthest i've gone to discover within a system is 664K ls
hope it all pays off in the end but it's more about seeing whats out there. :D
