Type 6 - To boldly go

Anow I wish I had the Asps jump range  Don't tell the flying brick ;)

The crazy thing is it doesn't make much difference. My Asp does half as many jumps to cover the same distance but the distance is insanely huge. I've found that playing in this game-simulation of the galaxy has had a life-changing effect on my understanding of, and attitude toward, space. The words "Final Frontier" mean something different to me. I realize, now, that it is - literally - not explorable, because .. there's no point in exploring it all.

I still get a thrill from seeing something unknown and new, unique to my own experience. But my personal sense of scale has shifted. For one thing, I don't care so much about the marketing meeting on monday.

Soooo.. howabout a new paintjob :D

Hear hear for another Type 6 explorer. I'm about 8000 LY away from sagittarius A now.

I'm only a few hundred LY closer. Did you go straight in from the populated bubble?

See you back in Civilization Rip! Just messed up with what I can best describe as being a star nursery, too many of the pesky things for me to dodge!

Man that sucks.

Won't help this time round, but I have a method of (mostly) avoiding this.
With the map in realistic mode you can get an idea of where the stars in a system sit. So a system that has five stars if selected in the galaxy map will show the companion stars as well as the main one. With a route plotted whenever you enter galaxy map it will show the next system in route already selected, and you can take a quick look at the stars. Mostly the companion stars are clearly visible at a distance from the main one. But there has been the odd system where there have been a few start showing as existing, but I could not make them out on the map separate from the main. I just don't jump to those now.

If anyone else has further insights to this happy to hear them. I'll get a couple of screenshots posted tomorrow if you want.

Nah Rikk, I don't need any sympathy. It was all my fault. You know how it is, 199 jumps done safe, just as you suggested and everything just peachy. You just jump in with the 200th without checking, because you just know that there will be no problems, just like the last 199, and POW! The lil so and so's have ambushed you. My own fault, so now I have to pay for it

Safe trip home Wyke.

I have just made it back to my home system after a 3k round trip out to Vulpecula Dark Region, then South as far as I could (down to -1,036) and then back. Amazingly found another 2 Earth-likes after the first one in VDR and the closest was only 455 LY from SOL at HIP 111025. Another uneventful sprint through the twilight zone, resulting in a pleasant 3.5m CR and Pathfinder rank :)

Pondering if I upgrade anything on the brick before heading out again, this time out a lot further on a bit of a sightseeing tour.

\o/ Finally found my first unclaimed (so far) Earth-like planet orbiting an F class star:

First Earth-like-2.jpgFirst Earth-like-1.jpg

I'm finding that the G class stars have a lot higher chance of having some strange odd-ball fairly rare planets, at least rare to me. Four personal first's for me orbiting around G's are: ringed HMC far out past the gas giants, Class IV Gas Giant, Ice planet with rings. I've only scanned 712 systems in total since starting to play, and only about 200 on this first trip into the void so that impression might change over time but it's fascinating to study the map of every system I scan and look for patterns in the data.

I'm still headed in the general direction of the Elephant's Trunk Nebula and have absolutely no idea when I might arrive as I'm using the economy jump method to go from one type G star to the next and completely scanning every system along the way.

@Ripster

Don't forget your landing procedures when you finally get back to your destination :D

Great advice Reido - I must also remember my washing procedure :) My better half is prompting me to say you don't HAVE to live the dream, we still have a bathroom

Joking apart Reido just flying and putting this brick down ANYWHERE is sort of starting to play on my mind.

This is by far the most enjoyable thread I've read thoroughly on the forums. At first when I got ED, I was aimed for the stars to explore.. then reality/finances hit me in the face with my starting sidewinder and I got into mining.. then trading pronto to make some money, but still with one goal.. To save up enough to travel far, blaze my own trail and explore. Now I've got my new T6 just about ready to turn from trading to exploring,,,

I have said this before Psylocke, both here and in other exploration centered threads. I don't know what it is, maybe it us just being resigned to the fact that no matter what mode we play in we will inevitably be gaming alone, I don't know, But the Elite Explorers 'gang' are possibly some of the best people that I have had the pleasure to get to know in several games that I have taken part in.

I am learning to stay away from all of the PvP versus PvE arguments, they do not do my blood pressure any good at all. But this group of people brings a grin to my face at least once a day while passing on useful and interesting information, and helps lower my blood pressure at times.;)

After a bit of time in civilised space, I have the Type 6 kitted out and pointed roughly at the Eagle Nebula for a bit of sight-seeing.

Keep an eye out. I have just set off again. I'm slow-boating along the zero degree line of longitude, doing some deeper cartography this time; so keep an eye out for another t-6 brick:)

Little Dumbbell Nebula and GCRV 950 is now seen.
gcrv_950_main_t6.jpg

Nice system. O class main star with lots of brown dwarfs and couple K-stars with few high metal content rocks. Nothing too fancy, but the color inside the nebula is worth a look if passing by.

On my way to Heart/Soul Nebula. Found couple interesting systems from galaxy map on the route. Navigating is bit harsh though, since my navigator is only able to find routes up to 300lys. :/ Definately more space in the Oorhoss sector..

So far I've found just one already-discovered Earth-like, lots of water worlds and giants with water-based life. Many beatiful sights, and lots more to come!

Will do Wyke. I am currently 1.7k out in Bleia Eohn - brown dwarf after brown dwarf, having to navigate 120LY at a time to make sure I can scoop. Fly safe :)

I made it!

Right on Commander!

The HMS Spinal Tap has taken off on an artifact finding mission in the deep black... the cargo hold is filled with classic guitars and amps, but the valves on those need replacing, ergo the artifact finding mission. We'll be stopping at every Heavy Metal world we encounter, because obviously that's where the Gods sent all the tube valves for our amps. Nigel made sure we have enough oomph so the ship does go over 11 :)

On a more serious note, yes, I've gotten myself an explorer T6 setup, and heading out to explore. the idea is to go north as far as possible, then skim along the top over Sag A* (possibly drop down just for the view, and then up again).

***EDIT*** Just noticed I accidently said a T9 instead of the truely magnificent Tourbus the T6 is meant to be!

Welcome aboard Psylocke.

Very nice group of people here as is the case with most exploration threads. There's no adrenalin fueled off-the-cuff posts like most of the forum, although we do get the odd outlier who complains about how boring exploration is and we usually just politely suggest that "This might not be the right activity for you".
