Ungulate Talk

There's still room for a few more ungulates. I will die on the hill that the white-tailed deer is utterly essential for American zoos, and I would also love Pere David's deer and a muntjac. I really want the greater kudu, and am open to a few more antelope on top of that, mainly bontebok, a duiker, and maybe klipspringer or dik-dik. And then maybe markhor, and Japanese serow if we were to get some other Japanese species to go along with it. And also Brazilian tapir, fight me.

idk, I really don't think the upper limit for ungulates is all that pressing as long as they're adding the right ones.

For me, these domestic ungulates do nothing to change what wild ungulates I think we could still use in game. None of these can stand in for the gaping lack of a deer or antelope to fill the small-to-medium-sized ungulate niche in India. As is the case for East Asia.

Honestly, the blackbuck feels like the most snubbed animal in the game  iconic and visually distinct species with a history of appearing in zoo games (Zoo Tycoon) and decent support from the fanbase, and an almost-consensus representative for India which still has no deer or antelope despite being the richest region outside of Africa for this set of animals. First Frontier left it out of the extensive antelope roster of the base game, which is fine. Then Frontier steadily added more antelopes, but never the blackbuck. Even in Grasslands and Eurasia. At least with individual species of bird or monkey or even deer, we can argue that Frontier just snubs the whole taxon. Blackbuck is the consistent snub in Frontier's favorite taxon! /rant :p

Guys I think we have enough ungulates now.
No, we do not. At least in my opinion. Ungulates are the backbone of IRL Zoos and I can never get enough. As other people said the Blackbuck is a really Miss as an Asian antelope which is one of the Most Common Zoo animals within european Zoos. We have No small sized antelope, preferally the Kirk Dik Dik. (Further possibilities would be big ones Like the Greater Kudu, the Nilgai or the Eland). Same goes for deers. A small sized one Like the Muntjac or the Pudu would be completely different.
In Case of Goat species the Markhor and the Musik Ox are pretty Essential. I even would Like to See the Barbary Sheep, too In Case of cows I would have nothing against the Yak.
Nevertheless I really hope Frontier further will Bring Ungulates to the game.

I'm definitely still hoping for an aoudad, yak and a small Asian deer. Also wouldn't mind a blackbuck and I think muskox is quite an essential for the game, although I personally don't need it. And while I know we're overdosed with African antelopes, I wouldn't mind seeing a kudu or an eland.

I think its pretty much a given that there will be at the very atleast 1 more ungulate, and going by the last 3 animal packs where we had an average of 5 per pack i think there is a real possibility that the remaining 4 animals are all ungulates.
Domestic yak, auodad, and japanese serow are the best options imo, although i really hope frontier keeps it to one, maybe 2 in addition to the markhor

Okay after this announcement we get the Markhor. Are Caprines at a good spot?

Personally I still want the Musk Ox for sure as it will be handy to flesh out Arctic sections
I want musk ox so much. And tbh that's it.

I don't need any other after that but will be fine with some of them: chamois, mountain goat, big horned sheep, Japanese serow. Just not all in the same pack please.

My sincere thoughts on ungulates I'd like to see:

1. Common eland--large antelope, relatively common in captivity, would be great for mixed savannah paddocks. Weird that it wasn't in the base game, honestly.
2. Reeve's muntjac--Very common Asian animal, works very well in mixed habitats with red pandas and various birds.
3. Elk--Would basically be a reskin of the red deer, but it's culturally iconic for North America. Also the mods for it are kind of on the older side. Don't care about subspecies.
4. Miniature zebu--Cool domestic, common in petting zoo areas while also being somewhat "exotic" from a Western perspective.
5. Southern pudu--Saw last month and they're absolutely adorable, basically the size of a large housecat. Would be a great inclusion for South America.

If I had to narrow down to 10 ungulates I'd like to see, I'd go with thus:
  • Nilgai (super underrated, and good to represent India)
  • Blackbuck (also helps fill in Indian wildlife)
  • Muskox (pretty much the last main "Arctic land animal" left to cover)
  • Shetland pony (normally I don't like repeating genera but Barnyard animals are the exception here)
  • Marsh Deer (South American ungulates are tragically underrated)
  • Greater Kudu (it's honestly baffling how little this antelope appears in zoo games despite how much purchase its look has)
  • Jentik's Duiker (a seriously under-appreciated group of antelope, well-known to be omnivores!)
  • Red Serow (a tropical caprine has a unique niche amongst this subset of antelope)
  • Siberian Musk Deer (represents a rarely-represented family of ungulates)
  • Southern Red Muntjac (a nice representative for small deer while also helping flesh out India once-more)

Ungulates I would like to see:
1. Small Deer (Reeves Muntjac or Southern Pudu) don't really have any small ungulates
2. Asian Antelope (Blackbuck or Nilgai) India needs more filler animals
3. Small Antelope (Kirk's Dik Dik or Red Duiker) again we don't have enough small ungulates
4. Muskox unique and some pretty cool arctic representation
5. Pere David's Deer only extinct in the wild mammal also at my local zoo

So if this is deffinetly a final celebration pack with 10-12 species and since this is Frontier we are talking about we get around 4 ungulates one being the markhor already revealed... Which other three would you choose to be the last ungulates to be added to the game?

Mines are: musk ox, blackbuck and gerenuk.

Honorable mentions to muntjac, duikers, kudu, eland, Chital, marsh deer, Pere David deer and elk.

The nilgai is indeed very underrated. The animal I want in the game the most with the coati ! But I fear I'm never getting it...
As far as ungulates are concerned, I still really want the nilgai, the eland and the muntjac. But I love them all and welcome them all. Would have preferred the chamois to the markhor though.

If there are 10-12 animals 4 ungulates is a pretty conservative number tbh. Gauging by the last 3 animal pack which had on average 5 per pack, or about 70% of the habitat animals, so youre most likely looking at 7 or 8 instead of 4.

Carnivores would be the other 4 (Palla's cat, a bear, coati and idk sea otter or whatever else) and then one monkey (baboon), one bird (secretary) and 2 oddballs. That makes 12. I think that is pretty much a Frontier pack haha
