Ungulate Talk

This is just the beginning.

I know one of the main reasons people want the blackbuck is as a filler Indian ungulate, would people be ok with an Indian deer like the axis or sambar as an alternative? Or does it need to be an antelope like the blackbuck or nilgai to satisfy people?

Id prefer all 4 of blackbuck, nilgai, a small deer (muntjak or hog deer) and an axis or sambar, but the fact that sambar looks rather similar to the red deer and the axis to the fallow compared to the very distinct looking black buck and just very unique nilgai makes the antelopes preferable to the larger deer to me.
Hog deer and muntjak meanwhile dont even really fill the same niche as the other 3 but small ungulates are very fun to build for and in a perfect world wed get both the hog deer and revees muntjak

Glad to see the love and support for blackbuck or another Indian deer/antelope - the lack is so gaping. Most ungulate-rich region of the world outside of Africa, and zero representation from its huge selection of deer and antelope.

Even if Frontier goes for a muntjac over the blackbuck, I'm hope for northern muntjac to go in all three regions (India, Southern China, SE Asia) of the Indomalayan realm which has zero deer or antelope rep at the moment. The Palearctic at least has Western Eurasian and Northern Eurasian deer species right now.

Muntjac > Gerenuk > Gaur > Mountain Goat > Blackbuck > Musk Ox > Pere Davids Deer > Aoudad > Great Kudu > Great Eland > Wild Yak > Bighorn Sheep > Chamois > Nilgai > South American Deer > Wapiti. In this order. I think these are all that are left which I want, maybe I forget somebody though.

Ungulates are probably the easiest type of animals to make and were present in most of the packs in the past. I hope it will stay that way.

I really want Asian antelope and endemic Asian deer.

My preference are Blackbuck and Père David’s deer.

I hope we can count on at least 4 ungulates before the game ends. I think that two packs awaits us next year so the chances are quite good. Fingers crossed.

Other than that:
Anoa
Musk ox
Eland
Muntjac
Guanaco or Vicuña

For me these top four are:

- Common Eland (kinda need the largest group of African antelope, and they’re common in zoos)

- Peré David’s Deer (Would be our only EW species and a huge conservation story, need an Asian deer)

- Blackbuck (Need an Indian Antelope before this game ends, would be great for mixed Indian grasslands)

- Musk Ox (One of the most unique ungulates remaining).

I would rank them in that order too in my personal wants. Kirk’s Dik-Dik would’ve made this list too but now we have it!

Others that I’d also like but less important:
  • Arabian Oryx (would be a Scimitar-Horned Oryx clone)
  • Nilgai (unique but not as important as the blackbuck for India)
  • Greater Kudu (likewise, unique but closely related to bongo and nyala already and Eland is more important)
  • Roosevelt Elk (icon of NA but we have a lot of temperate deer from NA/Europe already - inc. reindeer and moose which are similar).
  • Reeve’s Muntjac (feels less important now with the dik-dik bringing a small ungulate, second to PD Deer for an Asian deer)
  • Lowland Anoa (I would like but already have an Asian Bovid)
  • Javan Banteng (See Anoa).

We had some recent ungulate discussion in the main thread so it inspired me to reopen this thread and ask y’all

What are some oddballs not a lot people talk about that you want?

I know there was some talk about chevrotains and I always love to mention the musk deer. Are there any other under discussed oddballs you’d be interested to have?

Any of the south American deers, mainly the marsh Deer and Gray brocket deer(not the whitetail thought) would be great for me.

I would also love the Brazilian tapir and the Mountain tapir, the former because it's the tapir, thanks to captivity presence and iconic factor, and the latter because Wooly tapir looks really cool.

And lastly the red forest buffalo, as it's a charming animal that would add something more to tropical africa.(also Gaur and anoa, but i don't think they are oddballs at this point)
