That's the giveaway - PMFactions with strange sounding names. Unfortunately, they don't always give away enough to be certain. How does one tell within the game whether an MF is a PMF please?
I realise there are databases outside the game to refer to. I'm interest in any in-game indication other than some PMF with funny sounding names.

EDDB or Inara often distinguishes most PMFs easily enough, and tends to be relatively accurate if you want to search to double-check.How does one tell within the game whether an MF is a PMF please?

Abandoned PMFs, you say? They are billions.
you would actually have to be recognized as a member of a faction before you could see if that faction was active. Anyone can help a PMF but that doesn't mean they are a member. Honestly this game has been out for a couple of years now. Would be nice if we had some basic control over our creations.
Not all players are in agreement that there should be executive control over factions. it would appear to fly in the face of the basic design of the BGS.
We support factions we don't "own" them - although we do feel a sense of ownership. What i mean is that if 1000 cmdrs decided that MYFACTION was going to be their faction there would be little i could do about it but whinge.
The difference of opinion on this subject by the big BGS groups is massive. With squadrons coming another layer is added to the debate as from what I hear squadrons will be linked or have the option to link to a BGS faction.
I cant see FDEV messing with the BGS much with the implementation of squadrons so I assume any link or control over player created/adopted factions will be minimal at best.
Squadrons - Players like working together, w so we’re going to add a new organisation structure for player groups, called Squadrons. You’ll be able to create your own squadron with tools to manage its hierarchy and membership. Squadrons will feature enhanced communication options, making it easier to coordinate your efforts, whether you’re doing completing community goals, supporting your power or manipulating the background simulation. And as a little treat, squadrons will be able to purchase a fleet carrier, giving members a mobile base of operations where they can restock, refuel and respawn.
This one is registered on eddb as a player faction, but sure is unmanaged for as long as I can remember. In fact I long thought it was a NPC faction.

Thanks kinda the point. If a PMF is not actively managed and supported is it a player faction any longer?
My caution on this would be that FD should in theory have had contact details for every Colonia Expansion Initiative winner - and yet at least four active groups did not have their factions added following their victory for some months (while others who won a place at the same time got in) because whatever contact details they had were either wrong, outdated, spamfiltered, or otherwise incorrect ... or perhaps the group's reply with details of their faction was lost at FDev's end.At one point FD might need to do a sweep and simply ask Anybody home? I mean they should've the data who exactly entered the request for the PMF in question right?
Let's say give a total amount of 2 months for someone to reply Yep, still alive, just under another name or something to that extend.
