Update 13, Narrative and Access to 4.0

I think you've misread the post. Nothing is changing for Horizons as v3.8. You will still be able to do everything in that version that you can do in Horizons right now. You will be given a choice to use Horizons as a v4.0 if you wish. It's not being forced on you. You don't have to use it... Well, of course, unless you want to participate in the narrative from now on that is...
At least that's how I'm reading it anyway. To enjoy narrative after the Azimuth Saga, you'll need to use Horizons 4.0, and 3.8 won't(?) get any. Buuutttt... I could be wrong about that part, that's just my interpretation of the original post. 🤷‍♂️
But, you gotta admit that “land of the many colored snakes” is biblically epic.

Will horizons players be able to see odyssey players on foot on planets without atmospheres.

If so i can see a new form of ganking by getting mowed down by mad srv players 🤔

is it ganking when they're basically asking for it?

I'm really confused why all foot gameplay in any mode accessible to other players in places where other players actually frequent aren't constantly shot from the air or crushed by ships. In the balance of gameplay it would make absolutely no sense why exiting your armored and weaponized ship for something with no or extremely little protection would be anything but a suicide option. games with such disparate sizes of vehicles and such usually exclude the OP vehicles from the gameplay taking place outside of them to keep that un-balanced situation from even being able to occur. Though, given the cost of personal weapons and such on foot vs non-foot, that balance with the non-foot game was really not something they were prepared or cared to make any sense.

The only thing that was interesting to me about odyssey foot gameplay was trying to squash on foot npcs/players in my ship. But then i discovered that fdev made things like skimmers capable of basically one-shotting an anaconda if you bump them. lame and cartoony. Oh well.

Only in Open or a Private Group, obviously...but yes that is the hope...

Yeah, but everyone can land on non-atmo planets. So are we Horizons players gonna see little snowmen in ugly sweaters running around?
I hope so. I'm going to wear my glow-in-the-dark skeleton suit just to make sure all the Horizons players can see me jetpacking around outside their cockpit windows, doing cool waving and pointing emotes that they can't do because they're stuck in their chairs like overstuffed couch potatoes.

Great news! But I would expect FDev limiting Horizons players in only on-foot gameplay. In a form it is going to be (no access to tenure athmosphere planets) it would imo lead to even more bugs and issues with instancing.

E.g. how is that supposed to work if Odyssey commander multi-crew with Horizons commander and wants to land on tenure athmospere planet?

In that case I'll rename my ship 'Mr Creosote'

How long do you think they will support: Vanilla, 3.8, 4.0 Horizon and 4.0 Odyssey versions of the game? That's seems like too much.
4.0 will receive active support and further development, 3.8 will receive minimum maintenance.

4.0 can run in vanilla, Horizons, or Odyssey mode. The only difference is that a few buttons will be disabled, and there may be separate planetary instances for Horizons players because of PEGI rating issues.

The timing's kind of unfortunate. We've got the climax/finale of the Azimuth saga, along with this newly announced 'upgrade'(?) to 4.0 for non-Odyssey PC players coming in August... just a few weeks before the promised console profile transfer event which is supposed to happen in September sometime (unless they moved that and I missed the announcement - which is a distinct possibility).
The Azimuth saga has been going on for ages, it's kind of a shame they couldn't get these two adjacent events (update 13/Azimuth finale & console transfer) reversed in order, thereby allowing those console players who are planning on switching to be involved in the full 4.0 Azimuth endgame as newly-enabled PC players.

A couple of questions relevant to Fuel Ratting (there has been much speculative squeaking in our IRC about this).

Will Ody4 commanders be able to instance with PCHrz4 commanders, with PCHrz3.8 commanders alone in the current PCHrz universe?

If you are friended with a player on a different PC version of the game, what will you see as the friend's location (at the moment we see ED:Odyssey, and ED:Beyond in lieu of the client's system name when platforms differ). What will be the new nomenclature be?

Will the main menu sceen cleary identify which of the three PC game modes you are in? At the moment the logo top left is a dead giveaway. What signs can we ask a client to look for if we need to do check on their platform?

Hmm, my rig is lower (or about the same?) spec than yours and I get way better performance than what you are experiencing. I'm on AMD FX9590, Vega56 GPU 16Gb DDR3 running off a Sata3 SSD (Samsung 850 Pro). In Ody I get consistent 50-60 fps, except when arriving at stations. Granted, I'm only running it at 1080p 60Hz, so if you're running it at higher res/refresh, that could be your problem. 🤷‍♂️
I'm not running Odyssey, though. I refused to buy the hot garbage that was the Alpha-state release of Odyssey, and then continued to refuse due to the various "fixes" and "improvements" that have still not fixed the terrible performance the game exhibits... Not to mention the terrible planet gen, the basically useless, super-buggy, ultra-grind that is "on-foot action".

I'm perfectly fine flying ships through space (like the previous games were about), and exploring INTERESTING planets containing UNIQUE geography with a Scarab SRV.

Mad SRV players will have a nasty surprise when their Scarabs will succumb in 2-3 G5 L-6 rockets
Scorps will last longer, but well... a 2x L-6 setup will finish them rather fast too...

Are you going to pay for a gaming pc for me? Or my time administering a PC when I all want is to play a game from 2014?

You can still play a game from 2014.
Elite on Consoles wont shut down, but no more updates so you'll have the opportunity to play the game as it is now till they shut down the servers.
Literally as it is now, since no new content will be added to it (which is not exactly a bad thing if you really like the game as it is now on consoles)

I'm sure this has already been asked, but after a skim through the 17 odd pages of comments i can't spot it, in a straight forward way can we have a summary of what's going to happen for X box commanders, both in the short term with the Azimuth conclusion plus in the longer term.
