Update 13, Narrative and Access to 4.0

I may have misunderstood you but EDO, as the DLC it is, has always been optional. Much like Horizons was also optional while it was a DLC of the base vanilla game. EDH, while it was a DLC, also got a ton of content added to it.
In this set up, Horizon( Which they merged in to Vanilla for free) remains as the main game, while Odyssey, which was supposed to be a successor to Horizon, becomes the Ugly Duckling.
It feels like they are trying to distance them selve from Odyssey with this move, hence no more on-foot content ( No on-foot Thargoids? No wonder they kept quite about them when people asked over and over).
Why would they add more content to Odyssey, which already got " Hype " sold, and noone will buy it anymore - specially since it doesn't even have VR( which was one of the main saling points of Vanilla version).

Feels like this is the end for Odyssey.

maybe he took issue with "optional" being in quotes. I quoted it because unlike dlc's as they've traditionally existed, Fdev makes their dlc's more like the next version of the game rather than side-content you can interact with but isn't part of the games' plot or involves optional side-plots only existing within or optional levels or modes of play or optional characters / models to play as etc. Aside from CQC, that's not really how it's worked with elite dangerous.

it's more like a paid beta of the next version but tested in production.

I think you greatly misinterpret the news.

I am looking forward to seeing your reaction to what happens! (y)

I think you'll find it's just the opposite. Going forward Ody and Hor 4.0 will be the 'main game' that gets all the content, while 3.8 will be slowly left without. As I see it, that's the whole point of making a hybrid version (Hor + Ody stuff) so that Hor players can participate in the content that needs the Ody codebase to run in the future.

Exactly, they even took exclusive to Odyssey SRV and shared it to Horizon 4.0. As you can see even now they value Horizon more than Odyssey. This definatelly feels like the end for Odyssey. It failed...

I assume you didn't read this, then?

Therefore, Horizons players will be able to witness the final event in the Azimuth Saga and access related gameplay scenarios. Moving forwards, all PC players will have access to content in the next narrative phase given they are using version 4.0, except in cases where on-foot gameplay (and by extension, Odyssey) is required.

It appears that, indeed, the new narrative will have on-foot content, which Horizons only owners will not be able to participate in.

There already is an option to do so. Select the version of the game you no longer want on your HDD, then go to Options at the top of the launcher. Near the bottom of the dropdown list is 'Uninstall Game'. The tooltip for this say it will uninstall the currently selected game, and user files (like saves) will not be affected.
Yes, but FDev need to make sure that Steam or the Epic Games Launcher won't flag the installation as damaged and redownload the missing files.

They could be talking about on-foot CG's which we already had. I doubt they will make next narrative phase Odyssey exclusive content, in light of labeling their biggest ever DLC as " Optional ".

Horizons 4.0……… No Thank You, I will say with Horizons 3.8.

Horizons 3.8 has Better Performance
Horizons 3.8 has Better VR
I Prefer Horizons 3.8 UI
I Prefer Horizons 3.8 Planet Tech.

ps: I did buy 2 copies of Odyssey ( main & alt ) but still prefer Horizons

Elite Dangerous Horizons 3.8 is still a fantastic gsme that I LOVE

It is sort of specific...

This is exactly what Odyssey felt like - " next version of the game ", like Horizon became for Vanilla.

And it sounds like you will be able to continue playing it, as it is now...

I hope the players who haven't bought Odyssey yet will at least try optional Horizons 4.0 to see if the performance, UI and planet technology is better than they currently believe it is or was at Odyssey's launch.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHHHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

....no. I like my usable UI, high FPS, and distinct geography planets.

I rather see the optional Horizons in 4.0 client as dipping the toes to see what happens.. Once on foot content appears in the story it will be Odyssey only and Horizons owners will have to look on from the sidelines no matter what client they start.

Peeeerfooormaaance.

On hzn I have 40-60 on high.
Ody? 20 on lowest possible.
If they want give me graphic update in hzn okay. But I want better performance.
Don't play on a potato then. 40 FPS in Horizons? Until you figure hardware generation differences out you have 3.8. But don't expect them to continue optimization in 2022 and onwards for 2012-era hardwares.
