Update 13, Narrative and Access to 4.0

For the future game content... OK, it´s nice, but... Well, the Thargoids are cool, but could Salvation's Proteus wave finally awaken the Guardian evil AI? And the Gurdians too, to give humanity their support... :)

Even when the news are good the usuals still can't help complaining and criticizing...

Are they? - "To allow as many players as possible to experience the new narrative and gameplay elements, we intend to give all PC players access to version 4.0, at no additional cost, while keeping the upgrade to Odyssey optional. You will still be able to launch Elite in version 3.8 if you choose."
Bruce already answered the question on page 7, but thanks for clearing that up.
I am honestly happy they are opening up the game to more people. My original
concern was the loss of my preferred 3.8 client. FWIW, I pre-ordered Odyssey
back in the day, with much anticipation. I even purchased a fresh TWCS Throttle
and Extreme 3D Pro Joystick, to replace the ones I wore out playing EDH.

I also do not regret the money I spent on the DLC because the game has given
me many hours of enjoyment (too many). I just have my issues with EDO that I
cannot come to terms with and therefore play EDH exclusively. o7

i'd be surprised if this was not a temporary period. Otherwise fdev cannot realize the full benefit (or likely even the majority of the benefit) ...of having 1 version of the engine instead of 2 since odyssey's launch. Too much work is involved on the server side to maintain 2 separate means of dealing with 3.8 and 4.x.

I'd say 3.8's days are numbered.
Perhaps.

But, whilst there will be an on-going cost with respect to servers/APIs in keeping 3.8 going, there's a much larger cost in trying to backport 'new content' code changes to the 3.8 base. It might be only the latter that they're interested in removing from the equation for now.

Remember, it's not only the technical folk who get to make such decisions, there will also be sales and marketing input. If Horizons 3.8/console players are still spending enough money (including even a trickle of new players on consoles ?) then Frontier overall might think it worthwhile to keep 3.8/consoles going.

Personally I'd rather see 3.8 die, but that's me with my EDMC & EDDN maintainer hats on. I know maintainers of other third-party tools would also be delighted for there to be only one client version writing Journal files, with the only difference being Horizons and Odyssey flags set, or not.

good news? they are adding cockpit cats finally?!

I'm going to name mine Lord Tribble and he's going to be a fluffy maine coon sitting in the passenger seat and follow me around on concourses and knock everything off my table in my captains quarters.

it's good to finally get good news after a year of Odyssey. Yay cockpit cats!!!!!
It has been said, maaaany times, that there WON'T be any real content this year, but there will be next year, so before complaning, it would be civil to at least wait until they introduce the new content.

Aaaaaaarg, how can it be so hard to find out what is happening for Consoles, specifically X box series X. I'll try again, in the short term will we be able to see the outcome the Azimuth saga, in the longer term, what effects are we going to get (if any?), or will our game remain the same until the servers are switched off.
Bruce?, Sally?, anyone?
See Bruce G's reply: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...-and-access-to-4-0.606333/page-7#post-9902683
Yes, Horizons 3.8 players will get to fully experience the conclusion of the Azimuth saga.

What they won't be getting is any new content that requires client code changes/additions in the future.

As a current PC, Horizons only player my main question would be:
-How long will PC players have the option to play 3.8 Horizons?
There is no public information about that at this time.

Frontier might not even be sure at this point. They'll probably measure metrics of how many PC players play Horizons 3.8 versus 4.0 after the latter is available, along with how active the console playerbase is and how much income there is from consoles. If there's enough money coming in from 3.8/console players to justify the ongoing server side issues of running the dual versions then they'll continue to do so.

Code base changes are "meh" to exclusively Odyssey players.

What some of us want to know is whether you've managed to fix the Pulse Wave Scanner this time round. I really want to do some worthwhile mining!

Well, after playing the game for 5 years, I think I've earned the right to choose when to be lazy, my friend. :)
whatever you like my dear CMDR, I just like, that it doesn't take my hand in this activity and prompts me to do some flying and searching. And I just like that FA off flying/scouting for shards, 40m above ground in my DBX. Quiet ship, just thrusters firing/correcting. But, someone here said that it should be both. You know. Not POI in navi. panel, but we could see trough DSS, where are shards most concentrated. And I like this suggestion too. With this, everyone would be happy :)

Hello Games, know how to do update and expansions, and all for free. Maybe Fdev should pay Hello Games a visit and see how its done, when visiting ask how to do VR on foot properly. :ROFLMAO:
I'm certain that ED players would love this...

Best of both worlds, innit?

I'm afraid that won't happen . If they don't get the EDO sales they will step back from elite slowly( I think they are pinning on the Console Cmdrs to transfer across and then buy EDO) . You can see the effort slowly diminishing already.
They have written off the dev costs early so I doubt they are going to be bothered with tracking the DLC sales exclusively for investor reports now. Why would they be bothered with reworking an existing core feature in 2023 if they are just hanging around for Odyssey sales?! Plus didn't you read the post, it clearly states that codebase 4.0 allows them to do unique things with the Narrative that hasnt been done before, something that has also been pointed out by fdev earlier in the year. Therefore going through with a merge to unlock the new functionality in these broad Narratives doesn't sound like diminishing effort to me.

According to the table, EDH 4.0 players can see non atmospheric planet settlements (presumably from a ship or SRV).
  • Does that mean they can also see NPCs walking around those settlements? Or even shoot them from the ship/SRV?
  • Can EDO 4.0 players then also instance with EDH 4.0 players there?
  • More generally can EDO 4.0 players then also instance with EDH 4.0 players at all outside thin atmosphere planets?
I know this is not official, but I'm so sure of it that - in my hubris - I'll answer those questions. 😁

Yes to all of the above.

Horizons 4.0 basically is Odyssey. There are just two small exceptions: With EDH4.0, an exclusion zone will prevent you from landing on planets with tenuous atmosphere and you won't be able to stand up from your seat.

Everything else is the same. You will see the new settlements, you will see NPCs and players on foot, you will be able to participate in the new ground CZ from within your ships and SRVs.

Speaking of which, while I personally don't think U13 will bring Thargoid ground CZs (yet), it would fit what Frontier have told us. It would require 4.0 and Horizons 4.0 players would be able to join in.

Sounds like a good reading of the situation to me, it also makes it likely that on foot gameplay and planet type access (new ones) will be used to gate content in future.

I would suggest from reading the post that it hints at some sort of narrative-exclusive on foot gameplay in U14 (post merge), wonder when we will get a new planet type to walk on too?

It has been said, maaaany times, that there WON'T be any real content this year, but there will be next year, [...]
There will? 😝

In order to manage expectations, I'd say a feature overhaul doesn't necessarily mean more content than this year's narrative updates.

On the other hand though, I also would call the narrative updates "no real content", especially since we haven't seen them yet.
