Update 14 and Beyond: Live and Legacy Modes

I'm little confused, so Legacy version will be also offline version - no internet connection needed to play or it's only sort of backup pre 14 release?

6 Days.... ?
If you guys knew you were completely separating the 2 systems you should have given more than 6 days notice! Give people time to get their affairs in order.
I'm not against the separation, I think I might actually like having the old cmdr that I can do 'whatever' with. But a lot of players who are NOT on the forums everyday like us, and only get to play 2 times a week might end up with 1 or 2 days notice to get ready. Push back the v.14 release 1 week to give people time to move all their ships to where they need to be... finish the projects they are in the middle of.... move their Fleet Carriers close to Jameson if their out in Colonia for decommissioning if necessary (this one might actually be beneficial to only have to move 1 carrier back to the bubble and keep the 'Live one in Colonia). But the point is it is a COMPLETE separation with only 6 days notice.
I may be mistaken, but didn't Frontier say they would give plenty of notice before the transfer+ process was terminated?

Plans change again I guess.

really glad to see I can access 4.0 to play with mates who are too tight to buy EDO.
a little worried that the steamdeck I have just ordered in the post won't be able to run 4.0 however so my plans of chill out TV watching cargo runs may now be SOOL.
still great news over all I think

As Jack said, "legacy" mode won't be offline, but it might as well be! - no access to CGs or Galnet and it won't be connected to "live" mode!

While it "will" be connected to the BGS still, it'll only be to other commanders in "legacy" mode (Playstation, Xbox and PC 3.8 players), detached from PC 4.0 players!! 😯😂🩲😐😀🤘

I wonder how many (or few?) CMDRs are still playing on console. I've read many comments/posts from console CMDRs complaining that they'd quit and/or the console game was dead following its maintenance mode announcement, plus many stating that they've transferred to a PC account (playing either on PC or GeForce Now).
As someone who plays on XBOX and PS, I can give you some info in this regard.

On XBOX, it feels like the population is pretty low. When asked, players generally knew what was going on for the future of XBOX ED. The sense was that folks had either transferred or procrastinating til the last minute.

On PS, the population is pretty lively around the major gameplay hubs. I'm actually shocked at the number of new CMDR Sidewinders you see on PS (recent PS store sale). Most players do not know about transfers or what is going on with the future of the game.

The big difference between the two... XBOX ED has had occasional news blurbs about what is going on while PS ED has had zero communication in game regarding things. Anecdotal, but most of the console folks here that are communicating issues in these threads seem to be PS players.

Yes, you can make the Hitchhiker jokes about the planning office, but the XBOX players knew to grab a pint and their towel because they were given some info about the approaching vorgon fleet. In general, most PS players haven't even seen the vorgons moving into orbit yet because there has been zero communication to them in game. There is a minority of players that visit forums. And a smaller minority of those are console players. The game works for them, why should they head off to check out the forums for info unless prompted to do so? And it's not like there is a blurb about the incoming vorgon fleet at commonly used online ED tools like EDDB.

Lots of the current gnashing of teeth could have been headed off with a simple banner on the start screen for console versions to visit the forums for important information. The evil answer is FDev wanted to keep some money trickling in from unsuspecting console users. The more realistic answer is they never had an exit strategy or communication plan, so it's just put the clothes pin on the nose and try to make it through to the other side. The unfortunate reality is that in five years, everyone will talk about the quaint days of when ED had console versions and wonder where some folks got those odd azure ship paints.

13 September 2022

"The portal will remain open indefinitely, in order for as many Commanders to take advantage of the copy process as possible. Should the portal have a close date, we will of course inform players with enough time to react ahead of that happening."

"As of Update 14, version 4.0 will become the “Live” mode in which all new content and events will be introduced. Focusing development on a single version branch has already been essential to delivering content of the same calibre as the Azimuth Saga finale. "

it's in the first paragraph. You can't realize that if you're busy backporting to 3.8 still. In fact, none of this would make any sense to do if you were still backporting changes to 3.8. It's less extrapolation and just basic implication. This is being done so they dont have to backport anything to 3.8. 3.8 is in maintenance mod
Thank you for calling out the implications. I'm sure your intuition, deduction, and extrapolation all have merit. However comma what i sought was a more direct "yes" or "no" from an FDev representative. I was mistaken to raise the question in this arena. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Ciao

I'm sorry, I really don't know what your point is there. A post that was made 6 hours ago has been seen by 20k people so therefore 6 days is enough of a warning?
I was responding to your comment of course, which i quoted. Here it is again:
there are plenty of console players that are not glued to the FDev forums and aren't even aware that the clock is now ticking
Thankfully, Reddit (and other communication platforms) exist to help inform console CMDRs (like with that Reddit post) :)

I see, that Fdev do everything, to destroy his own people there.
This update only ensured me, that this game soon will be closed due to Fdev politics. Still is there more important bugs, which is needed to fix. First Fdev killed VR players, after that no support (next-gen patch) for newest consoles and after that, this news about Odyssey... Transferring from console to PC not resolved problems, which meets console users with weak PC or not having PC.

It would be good, if Fdev will again interest console users before it will be too late and PC users retreat from this game, closing ultimately game servers.
For now, the resolution, which I see, is releasing 4.0 version for consoles and/or applying changes, which improve and fix experience on 3.8 and 4.0 versions. There's many suggestions, which fits on both versions, just need to be implemented.

Even NMS or Eve Online (which is only for PC) regularly got a patches, which upgrades game and implements new things to those games. In Elite, I don't know, when last time was been implemented serious changes (without add-on).

Fly safe CMDR's. o7

I'll start by saying I understand why this is being done, the desire to consolidate the code base and make things future proof, easier to support, move the narrative forwards etc. etc. Now for my concerns. Having waded through all this my understanding is that after Update 14 - everything is separate. Where my ship is in Ody will no longer be where my ship is in Legacy Horizon, what's in my Cargo in Ody will be different to the same ship in Legacy Horizons, my mats in Ody will become different to my mats in Legacy Horizons...... right???

I ask because these days there's only 2 reasons why I drop into 3.8/Legacy Horizons (and I think this update will stop both of these from working for the same reason - i.e. mats will stop syncing between the two).

1. Collecting mats from Guardian Sites - especially things like Guardian Tech components. In 3.8/Legacy Horizons these are easy to get from destructible panels - you shoot them and then pick them up. In Odessey they have an annoying habit of vanishing / launching into orbit when you shoot them. If FDev fixes this then happy with that. (seriously these things are used for premium gauss ammo and they are really really hard to collect in Ody! At least that's my experience. You shoot the panel and it's GONE!!!)

2. Collecting G4/5 (depending on your point of view) Mats from Crystal Shards. In 3.8/Legacy Horizons you rock up to the bio site and fill up. In Ody you have to wander about the planet for the odd cluster over and over. Again - much easier in 3.8/Legacy Horizons than Ody.

I'm assuming that both of these strategies are at an end - as anything collected in 3.8/Legacy Horizons won't stay with you if you relog back into Ody/Live.

I think I know the answer but just wanted to make double sure. o7
