Update 14 and Beyond: Live and Legacy Modes

I actually see this as an opportunity to get back to a more old school Elite experience, but with added option of multiplayer. Maybe this is a good thing for die hard Elite commanders.
Elite: Dangerous was always about piloting my own spaceship for me.

Odyssey and 4.0, good riddance.
Win win... bye!

It's an even better reason for me to never go back into 3.8 ever again...

Well, I promised to move my carrier, but after that, never to go back into 3.8 ever again.

Interesting you mention Powerplay. Will be interesting to see what happens with that on legacy. Will the powers just collapse?
Don't think it's feasible for either BGS or Powerplay to be maintained on both. I know I won't bother with Legacy, except to look every 6 months or so and see how things have degraded. Like shutting off the fresh Water supply of a Aquarium.

Same goes for me! I'll just be doing that in 4.0! :D
But yeah, I guess this is exactly the right attitude. Legacy mode is as close as it can get to an offline mode while the galaxy is still server-based.
Have a, still shared, galaxy without all those pesky updates that change things around.

Those who aren't able to run 4.0 without issues due to hardware are the ones who actually don't have a choice to join live mode, which is a pity. I wish there was a solution for that, but live games need to progress in graphics and so will the requirements I fear. :(

I'm not against the progress and evolution of the game, but first you need to make a stable new platform before cutting off the older version. Now we have an unfinished version of Odyssey and a good stable version of 3.8 Horizons that they are shutting down right now. I periodically check what's in Odyssey and unfortunately there are still old bugs in the field of exploration.

We're lucky to have 3.8. If FD had been able to make Odyssey run on consoles, 3.8 would have been scrapped on the spot.

I'm so grateful that Odyssey is a mess. :)

I don't know that I'm affected (since my return I've explored with the new client, even if I've little-to-no interest in wandering about on foot), but I can absolutely and entirely agree that both the time chosen for this split, and the time frame offered for the transfer final warning, are both abjectly poor. Bad official decision making, short-sighted choices and then this thread tops it all off with a few rather unpleasant and casually rude trolls hurling heartless, thoughtless posts in the official thread? No wonder people are feeling justifiably sore about things, and no wonder my ignore list for the forum is getting so long.

I wish those still in 3.8 good luck and bon voyage, and hope they're able to put in a support ticket to resolve their transfer issues. As to FDev - really quite disappointed in the operational decision processes here.

It's possibly a balanced choice between keeping what they have coming quiet so as not to spoil it. Whatever they decide to do, they were going to get flak for it.

However, you really can't say that no-one saw this coming.

I'm very much in favour of them not revealing story events upfront, but this announcement doesn't reveal any anyway, so could have been made earlier (assuming, obviously, that it wasn't some last minute issue with U14 that led to them thinking this split was the only way it was going to get released)

3.8 is going to have bad things happen to it, sure, that was obvious. Entirely separated galaxy, BGS, accounts, etc? I didn't see anyone call that in advance.

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand. If I run Horizons 3.8 in the old universe (Legacy Modes) on my computer, will I be able to fight in the open game with players on consoles ?

Could be, indeed.
I dont really think they knew 2 months ago they will split the galaxy, duplicate accounts and make 3.8 legacy
I mean, there is no reason not to announce the Legacy/Live split 2 months ago and convince even more consolers to find the means to move on PC.
