Update 14 and Beyond: Live and Legacy Modes

Instead of splitting to Live and Legacy, they should fix first 4.0 version (and add 4.0 Horizons for consoles), so no one will stay behind. After it, they should continue fixing 4.0 version with the help of console users, to prepare them slowly to Odyssey add-on. And after applying Odyssey, we would continue helping fixing Odyssey, because we could be know more about, what bugs annoys or requires to fix.

And how we can help fix 4.0 version, if Fdev locked this opportunity before us, console users? This must be changed. By locking 4.0 version before us, the number of helping with finding bugs is decreased and takes longer. We can help with finding bugs, just give us 4.0 update.

I mean making 2 servers where only BGS is separated is not the same as making completely separated servers. 2nd is much easier. 1st maybe impossible yet. And I don't want to play 2nd version where I should decide what CMDR to keep/play.

Hmm... i don't think you understand. Its effectively the same idea. The suggestion made in the past regarding PvP/PvE servers is the same as what FD are doing here with separate BGS, except both would continue to get updates. One of the common complaints from the PvP crowd is how PvEers can affect "their" BGS from PG/solo, so by having a separate BGS, with open only, and full PvP, that issue goes away, and the 100 or so people who play on the PvP servers can relax knowing nobody can affect "their" BGS from the safety of PG/solo. The only difference would be that on the PvE server it would be impossible to directly harm another commander through ramming or weapons... although really, that's not that required, since Open could remain as it is now with PvP enabled for those who want it and PG/solo remain. It basically would give the hardcore PvPers their own playground on a separate sever.

Besides, FD wouldn't have to keep it running for long, as those who scream loudest about people working the BGS in PG/solo will soon get bored when they realize nobody is working the BGS or opposing their efforts anyway on their PvP server. :p

Don't think it's feasible for either BGS or Powerplay to be maintained on both. I know I won't bother with Legacy, except to look every 6 months or so and see how things have degraded. Like shutting off the fresh Water supply of a Aquarium.

Yeah, i'm pretty sure PP will be dead on legacy. Some people might enjoy working PP or BGS on legacy since i guess player numbers will be so low you'll effectively be able to have your own playground and do what you want, expand who you want and where.

moar mean words!

blows nose

More seriously Powerplay and the BGS are a team game, its pointless alone.

Actually, legacy could be a good time to push PP's mechanics to the limits and see if its actually possible to cause the collapse of a power or how far you could push a power's boundaries.

Or maybe its finally a chance for Archon to claim that coveted first place!

Doubt much will change, the majority of Players changing to the Live version. Those who can't or won't will be stuck in the Past, essentially living off borrowed time. And nobody is going to keep both sides BGS and Powerplay running, only Live is what matters in the end.
Exactly, majority will be on Live, so this will give players an opportunity to create their own playground in Legacy.
Lets face it - no one expects much from Frontier at this point. The one or two updates pr year won't change the BGS gameplay. So this is it, this is as far as this game have gone.
And with out INARA and other sites tracking progress, Legacy will give players the true Sandbox experience, no more cheat sheets.

I wonder if the large PMFs will bother to continue keeping their empires intact in Legacy? It should be fun to watch if they are going to work at maintaining the status quo over 2 versions.
The quote 'He who defends everything, defends nothing' seems pertinent here. I'm sure some will and it'll be funny when they start coming up against groups who are only focused on the live game.

From the standpoint of Fdev this makes sense. If the BGS gets altered in U14 - as has been teased for quite some time now - and those changes are massive enough to need their own BGS version in order to work, then I am all for it. Sounds interesting and seems to the right thing to take the game forward. This also explains the real purpose of Horizons 4.0.

Yet I still want to know:

Are they suddenly feeling comfortable with how Odyssey performs on our systems?
Did they perhaps resolve some of the more glaring issues that were still present in Odyssey? (/s?)

I just hope that Odyssey can emit that Horizons feel at some point.

Gotcha. Workarounds that depend on jumping between versions won't be possible following U14. Although that's not the sort of gameplay we particularly want to encourage.
What about those who are stuck far away from the Bubble on FC?

The mining in Odyssey is very low right now, about more than double. So, it would take me about 12 hours in Horizons and 30 hours in Odyssey to refill 1000 tons of tritium.

To refill 25,000 tons of tritium would take 312 hours of uninterrupted play in Horizons and 716 hours in Odyssey, which is 13 and 30 days of uninterrupted play. Considering that I can at best go into the game for 3-4 hours a day, and sometimes a week, it's easier to write off the FC than to refuel it in Odyssey at the expense of mining.

Bring back mining as it was in U3.6
