Update 14 and Beyond: Live and Legacy Modes

Shame that console players judging by this update have only so long it seems before it be a MIRACLE to encounter a player in open anymore, even at crowded spaces like CGs or PvP hubs like Deciat or Shinny...

No it doesn't. The schism hasn't happened yet AFAIK. Whatever you do today in Odyssey should still also mirror over in 3.8. All I ask is that you leave your carrier in an unpopulated system (can be in the Bubble right next to Deciat if you want) until this schism takes place and the clone of your carrier is made in 3.8 that will never move again.

Either that or set the funds in your carrier bank to run out by the end of the year, and then put those funds back in after November 29th. That will allow your 3.8 carrier to decommission in early 2023 (in 3.8 only) which is probably an even better solution since you're never going back to Legacy.
I suppose you wouldn't want to have to keep up with the efforts of covering the costs for two carriers in alternate universes each week.

Unless, of course, there's no carrier costs in Live because there's not enough of human civilisation left to charge them...

They would only see CMDRs on the same platform as themselves today, wouldn't they?
So the only change will be wastage as others decide to play something else, surely?

Part of the reason I've never taken my carrier out of range of the bubble is the fact I just can't work out how to mine Tritium well enough to keep it fueled.
With 8000t of tritium stored in you FC you can go to colonia and return, with a full cargo of 20000 of tritium you can go to the other side of the galaxy and back. With buyed tritium you can safety leave the bubble and go anywhere you want.

I might even go one better and decomission it.

I have trouble spending all that money on that much Tritium at once. For some reason I can't get my fingers to open my wallet.

The problem is that most people, including myself, have YEARS worth of carrier upkeep funds stored away in their carrier bank accounts, so everyone abandoning Legacy will be leaving behind unattended carriers forever cluttering whichever system they are in when u14 drops. That's why I'm asking that players either move their carrier temporarily to an unpopulated system (the Bubble is full of them) or temporarily empty their carrier bank accounts so that whichever version of the game they abandon will see their carrier decommissioned in weeks rather than years.

Of course the sad reality is that only 0.01% of players will read my pleas and act on them, so we're doomed to have systems full of space junk for years to come. This will also affect Odyssey, as you guys will have all the abandoned carriers from 3.8 holdouts like myself (though my carrier is in deep space with services enabled) and the console players. It really is a quite literal mess.

hmmm....I'm not sure it's entirely reassuring to see tah

I used to fill my FC with Tritium in the bubble and would then mine to break up the monotony of long exploration trips (~several weeks). That proved to be the "sweet spot" for my personal playstyle. I haven't played Elite properly in many months now, so I don't know if mining has been further nerfed to make it an even more pointless activity.

As for Update 14. I'm obviously at least a bit curious what's going to happen next, but considering that it's most likely only more combat and pew-pew with a sparkle of "The end is nigh", I'll probably keep playing other games for the time being . There's no real reason or point for me to "evade" the consequences of the new narrative by playing some "legacy mode". As for my FC, it's parked and idle somewhere in the bubble and hasn't been moved in months. I don't even know (or care anymore) if I've deactivated the services. I don't really think that anything is going to happen to my FC anyway, even if it's parked in the "impact zone" of one of those Stargoids.🤷‍♂️

My carrier is parked in Velnambe, but it's usually the only one there. I'll try to remember to decommission the Legacy one, anyway, although it does seem like a shame if I ever want to dip back into the Before.

Not so sure about the years to come. Will Frontier subsidise ED Legacy for very long if revenue falls behind maintenance cost?

That's it. Where shall I keep my billions? In my CMDR account where they do nothing, or in my carrier account where they might save my carrier if I'm unexpectedly prevented from playing for a while? The answer is obvious. Since it's so for everyone, there won't be many carriers evaporating for a few decades.

You can request the decommission and then cancel it in Odyssey after u14 drops. This way you keep your Odyssey carrier while the 3.8 carrier automatically decommissions after the timer runs out. 🤗

And if you ever go back to Legacy someday, you'll have all those extra credits waiting for you!
I might not be brave enough to try that. I still remember how annoyed I was that carrier jumps still happened after supposedly cancelling them.

The option for mode hoppers is to park your carrier in an unpopulated system (TONS of them in the Bubble) before switching to your preferred mode. I assume mode-hoppers will have a preferred mode, since progress won't carry over between the two. A player equally active in both modes can just continue business as always.

Wearing my "I'm alright Jack" hat as a console CMDR who already did the transfer and is now happily flying and walking around in Odyssey and generally enjoying it despite its obvious flaws and bugs, I can see this move makes perfect sense ...

BUT...! Taking that hat off, I'm sorry FDev I have to call you out on the timing of this. Before this announcement the most recent Dev info about about console transfers was that the scheme was running "indefinitely" and that CMDRs would be given ample warning when it was coming to an end. Now console CMDRs are suddenly given less than a week's warning that the scheme will be stopping, and only returning in future in a reduced form. That's really... well ... try and guess what word I would use there because the forum filter would undoubtedly delete it.

Not cool FD, not cool.

I've actually got discovery credit on a star without planets somewhere in the bubble. If I can remember where, maybe I'll park it there.
