Update 14 and Beyond: Live and Legacy Modes

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
dear Bruce, thank you for this clean separation of 3.8 and 4.0. The regular "Switch to the old Horizon, it's easier to do this and that" statements are not the purpose of the whole thing from my point of view either. I am already looking forward to the things that will come in update 14 - 16. cough and maybe there will be player settlements after all - with cosmetics you could flush some really good money into the coffers.

Greetings Commanders,

We have an important announcement to share with regards to future game modes as of Update 14 which is due 29 November! Read all about it on our website and let us know what you think in the comments below:

"...it will be reintroduced in Q1 next year.

The version of the process that we reintroduce will not be as comprehensive as before and will only copy the most essential profile data related to player progression."
Yep, and so much for lots-of-notice. I only migrated my console account today after reading the news on the forum, if there are no in-game/loader notifications then I'm sure other console commanders will miss their chance for a full-copy respawn.

Seems silly to go through the trouble to make a Legacy mode, only to kill it a few months later. If that were the plan, why not just kill 3.8 now?
To kill off 3.8, it would have to be seperated from 4.0+ anyway, and that has now been done. Presumably there are still enough console and Windows 3.8 users buying ARX to avoid the axe at the moment, but now 3.8 is confirmed as second class, I wonder how long that will remain to be the case.

PR wise, as the galaxies drift apart, Legacy will become ever more 'living in the past' and ever more easy to dispose of.

I got the feeling that update 11(?) was the last big performance based update and we'll only see tweaks to the system as and when they can make them. Right now they want to focus on narrative and content.

I would imagine it'll get better but it seems the right thing to assume that the performance you see now is going to be more or less how it stays.

But then what do I know? Next week could be the silver bullet for a few issues since they can properly focus on 4.0.

Maybe this is why the console transfer announcement was made now - they've been focusing on what can be improved now that they decided 4.0 will be separate. Maybe it's only late on that they've realised the 4.0 specific changes they want to make in this update scupper the transfer.
I am fairly certain, that there wont be any major peformance improvements, as much as I want them. FSR 2.0 and an AA fix would come a long way, same with some fix for system wide lighting. Wishful thinking, but maybe they got a surprise for us. Maybe focusing their efforts on one codebase does pay off.

As long as they keep selling Legacy on the consoles, I'm not worried. When Elite disappears from the console store (the assumption is that they will support the game at least a year after their last sale), then I think the writing will truly be on the wall.

Though it will be interesting to see if Frontier bothers to change the marketing on console or even Steam for that matter.

Due to possible legal issues with regards to console customers, I guess. AFAIK they still sell it to them, right?

See my post above. Consider the legal issue of selling Elite on console today and killing it tomorrow. As long as they continue to sell Elite on console, I think we have a year's worth of support for Legacy past that. Of course they could in theory kill it off sooner, but somewhere there's a line where they are going to get into trouble for selling a dead game. Surely there are consumer safeguards in most countries that prevent such actions.

No it doesn't. The schism hasn't happened yet AFAIK. Whatever you do today in Odyssey should still also mirror over in 3.8. All I ask is that you leave your carrier in an unpopulated system (can be in the Bubble right next to Deciat if you want) until this schism takes place and the clone of your carrier is made in 3.8 that will never move again.

Either that or set the funds in your carrier bank to run out by the end of the year, and then put those funds back in after November 29th. That will allow your 3.8 carrier to decommission in early 2023 (in 3.8 only) which is probably an even better solution since you're never going back to Legacy.

Sorry, i need my carrier where I am.

Maybe, if i remember, i'll remove the carrier funds the day before the split happens, so it decommissions sooner.

Besides, its not like the system where my FC is usually parked is a popular system anyway.

So as a premium beta user I perfectly understand the whole thing.
But I can only imagine how confusing it will be for a new player.

Or as the other fellow suggests, schedule the carrier for decommission the day before the split and cancel the day after. That should be an easy couple of clicks (assuming one can decommission a carrier anywhere in the galaxy) and ensures the 3.8 carrier is removed from the 3.8 servers.

It's a gesture of kindness to your 3.8 kin, not an expectation or requirement. Hence my multiple uses of the word 'please" in my many requests, along with cute emojis 🤗

That's actually a great idea. Not even needed to log in 3.8 to decommision. Thx!

I've already set 2 of my FCs to decomission as I won't be playing those accounts in Legacy, I'd do the other 2 if I was certain I wouldn't be using those, but as they are 16KLy out from the bubble, I don't think they will get in anyone's way.
