how do i get the update to work?

This happens when the server has been updated but the client side has not been uploaded for hte launcher to download. I assume it would be to prevent people spamming the server with connect attempts

Go to https://elitedangerous.com and download and install the launcher available there; it seems automatic launcher updates were disabled at some point for reasons, and you may run into issues depending on what version you are stuck on.

Many times but still not getting an 'Upgrade' button. Client still telling it's too old etc.

You need to read the patch notes again, a few of your points ARE included in the fixes, just read carefully!

I laughed anyway - it's more akin to laughing with the community than at it. I saw it for what it is - a harmless bit of joshing.
