Update for those that have "Disconnecting" issues while playing ED

Hey everyone, FD, I have been having disconnect issues while playing ED for a week now and it was so bad that it would knock out my internet completely and one time last week my area too. Playing ED may be responsible for the Netflix outage in five different countries last week. <--just kidding. But seriously I have been working with my ISP to fix the problem and today I spoke to the tech at my apartment that identified the problem. ED when accessing the mission menu, galaxy map, or jumping to systems is pushing my broadband to the breaking point to where it goes offline. I have phone line DSL and I am using the fastest residential service that they provide. So they are upgrading the outside hardware to handle the heavy load.

So my advice if you are having disconnect issues while playing ED trying to access the missions, galaxy/system maps, jumping into and out of systems, is to reduce the load on your internet if you can not have your ISP change the hardware to handle the stress. I did not have this problem until the last update. We experience this problem differently because we use the internet differently while playing ED. And some ISP hardware lines are better or newer than others.

Interesting. I have had identical issues.
Also, when accessing the missions menu it's quite common for my ram (16Gb corsiar 2.4Mghz) to run up to 10000Mbs . And framerate to drop to zero.

Flimley

Its starting to get frustrating. Lately game loses connection in many activities. Jumping, on mission board loading, when in wing, even once when i was interdicting. A friend lost an upgraded module when trying to load the second ship and buy it back.

EDH 2.1 is like mighty mouse, small but powerful. It pulls more data from the servers than any game I have played in the past or present. Netflix cant even compare to the broadband usage with 2.1

I think I have a solution for FD to work on fixing this issue. FD please consider making each game client able to be a server, but ONLY with the data that we need to access maps and systems. Leave out certain files needed to RUN the client as a server, until you are ready to stop development of the game. This problem will only get worse with every content update that you add. I hope you are listening. Thanks.

Whats your ISP company?

Ummm...

I have a gigabit fibre to the home (FTTH) connection and still get random disconnects, particularly in private group where all client machines have the same WAN IP address (I play with my kids,) and you are trying to use the wing functionality. Interestingly, there are far fewer issues when the wing is initiated with all ships already in the same instance. Trying to wing up in different systems leads to disconnects.

The problem is not your ISP's crappy copper, although good job on getting them to upgrade their junk.

*edit*

And no, Elite is actually really light on bandwidth usage - check it yourself with Ctrl+B - even in busy instances, it doesn't pull more than 300kbps (kilobits per second) for me. Additionally, the network manager software on my laptop tells me that the most bandwidth-intensive game I run is Battlefield 3. Indeed, it's the only game on the app list. The rest is Steam updates, Firefox and Windows Update.

Elite when pulling data for missions, maps, systems, other unknowns, is a monster. But not when just simply playing, thats not when it disconnects.
And yeah...AT&T, money talks.

No. No, it's not.

Look at the bandwidth usage (Ctrl+B) - you're not even pulling megabits per second, regardless of what you're doing with the client.

Money talks and bovine fecal matter walks.

Now, AT&T might be pulling a fast one on you by shaping UDP traffic at particular times of day (I've run into this with TalkTalk in the UK previously - Skype used to literally drop all calls when the clock turned to 12:00PM UK time, and you couldn't get them back until the clock hit 17:00,) but Elite Dangerous is quite simply not a bandwidth-intensive game.

lol I met with the tech guys before they started replacing the outside hardware. They checked my modem and phonelines inside first and then I booted up ED got to missions and bam, disconnect and modem shut down all red lights. Cant argue with that.

I'm not saying that that's not what you're experiencing.

What I am saying is that the issues (widely reported and replicable) have little to do with your connection. Your particular issue might be due to third world hardware, but other users (myself included) have the exact same issues with far superior connections.

The latest round of disconnects and network glitches are symptoms of a server-side issue.

Good job on getting your ISP to upgrade their crappy copper though.

I monitor my bandwidth usage to a very granular degree and can track individual programs with both current and historical usage. Elite is well down in the bottom third of use overall. That is, it uses the least amount of bandwidth.

"if you can not have your ISP change the hardware to handle the stress." Huh? ISP's provide a service. The equipment they use is built to a standard and used ubiquitously for residential and businesses alike. They don't have better gear on a shelf in case of problems.

There has been a series of excellent forums posts on disconnects and instancing issues. Follow those guides. There may very well be crappy or poorly config'ed hardware to blame for your issues, but if there is, you own it.
