General / Off-Topic User Name? Whats your story behind It.

Just to begin with this isn't about your Elite Commanders name, this is about your Online name.

your user name is your own personal Branding, Your name frames how people will see you as a public figure when online, so what is the Story behind it as there is almost always a story as to why you chose the name and stuck with it.

I got mine when I first went online back in the early 90s and needed to register for a email address. even back then I didn't want to use my real name so ended up choosing Mobius. I remember sitting in my bedroom racking my brains for a name so decided to get some inspiration from my movie collection. Forbidden Planet is one of my all time favourite movies and remembered that there was a character in it that went by the name Dr. Edward Morbius. so due to me spelling it wrong when I got my first email address I have stuck with it, but as the years go by what was once a unique username is now copied by many, which can be annoying when registering your online name.

since then the name Mobius has popped up many times as other characters the word even has its own Wiki page.

So What's the story behind yours can be as dull as how I got mine.

I've met a Mobius in real life mate.

Wolfman was taken so I got Wulf.

True but dull story.

My moniker is in honour of a 'wild west' showman (he may even have been a genuine cowboy), who became an early pioneer of manned flight. He died test-flying an aeroplane of his own design a hundred years ago - Samuel Franklin Cody. An interesting character, who I reckon had the right stuff.

Samuel Franklin Cody is my commander-name, so if you happen to encounter plain old Commander Cody - it ain't me!

I like computing, and ducks. ComputerDuck sounded a bit lame (not like a lame duck, that's something different) so I went with the alliterative DigitalDuck. I sometimes say it was inspired by the back of a German lorry (they have Digitaldrucke written on them), but it wasn't really. Quack.

It could easily have been ProgrammingPenguin, I quite like penguins too.

And there was me thinking that you called yourself Mobius as a kind of honour to Escher. I'm sure I saw a Mobius Strip on the side of your spaceship.

Forbidden Planet.. what a great movie. I assume you learned your artistic skills using one of those brain-stretching machines. Just beware of those monsters from the id.

I felt that the first Halo paid tribute to that movie, machinery that went down many miles, some of the soundscapes, and invisible monsters that could be lit up by plasma bolts.

My choice of name is a dull tautology, but then I never wanted to be anything other than Frank.

I tend to give myself a different name everywhere i go so never get too attached to a handle, on a hardware site i used to write for i was RipperRoo as at the time i was recovering a lot of scratched CD's for friends (CDEX in paranoid mode - gotta love it ;) )

i wrote one or two informative articles for them before retiring as a new job monopolised my time.

these days with the advent of facebook and almost everyone using their real names online i tend to register for sites with a variation of my real name if i want to be identified such as on here, and pseudonyms for places where i prefer a bit of privacy such as game servers.

Over the years I've been Tallwomble (Killer Wombles - Tiberian Sun,) TallnDeadly on MOH (more like TallnDead as i never last long) and various other random names with 'Tall' in them.

My forum handle may seem rather dull but there is a story behind it... I was actually born "Darren Purdy" but never liked the surname, even as a child (unrelated to the fact that my father and I are now estranged). When I turned 18 I decided to change it by deed poll, and after some thought decided on "Grey". Partly because it sounds good, partly because it's recognisable without being common, but also heavily influenced by Tolkien, Babylon 5 and other fictional representations of grey being a colour of mystery and intelligence. Back then I used to dye my hair silver-grey and wear only grey clothing, only buy grey items, etc. I still stick to mostly grey clothing and items, but I've switched to more sensible hair...

On a few forums I go by just "Grey", but I usually prefer to use my full name. It's a name I chose and one I'm proud of, so I'm happy to flaunt it :) So glad I managed to get Commander Grey in the game...

OneViGOR comes from my YouTube channel, when I first created it a couple of years ago. I was originally just going to go for ViGOR, as Vigor is my surname. But, as you might imagine, it was taken, meaning I had to think of something to make it unique. I decided to just stick One on the beginning. After all, there is only one of me!

You might think the capitalisation in my username is odd, but it's mostly down to pronounciation. The two words had to be one for a username, so I jammed them together and capitalised the start of each word. That got me OneVigor. Then comes pronounciation. My name is pronounced with a long i. It's not Viggor, it's not Veegor, it's V-i-gor. To make the i stand out, I kept it small and capitalised the other letters.

This is also where the eye logo that is my avatar came from, too. In order to help say the i is pronounced 'eye', I dotted the i with an eye in my original logo. I later refined the logo to make it look nicer, and eventually the eye became a seperate entity all together.

Anyway, there's my long, interesting story! Anyone think they have a longer one?

So if you prefer Wolfman whats the story behind that one

inspiring and by the sounds of it a worthy name to use

Have to say an unlikely combination Ducks and computers but DigitalDuck is a clever use of the two.

I've only recently been using the Mobius strip as a logo. my name has evolved from being a wrongly spelt characters name to something that means something to me, im so used to it that it feels like a normal everyday name to me.

And Frank you shall always be known as Frank in my eyes:D

your only a few inches taller than me, and I can see what you mean when you say you have different names as the story for this forum username is to do with the Kickstarter.;)

I agree, it's a good name. Known, but not common. Strong, but not obscure. All around, not a bad choice!

now that's a pretty cool story to a permanent username. like the thinking behind the name Grey as it makes sense, though you probably took the colour grey to the extreme for everything else:D

like that one, so is it like igor with a V in front?

ill put money on it that someone has the name Commander Cody, more to do with a star wars reference. I shall blow him into space dust when I see him.

I will be known as Commander Mobius so as long as people cant use numbers in their name im safe, wouldn't want to see a m0b1us flying about.

Now, I don't know about the rest of you, but I kinda want to know where Chris Jarvis' 'holdmykidney' comes from!

Mine was from the early 90's on compuserve at that time used to frequent a lot of chatrooms, I had the original Lister@compuserve.com but when they merged with AOL my name had been taken and I became Listeri69. Reason is because I was a massive Red Dwarf fan I still am, I went to live recordings of season 2 and 3 in the oxford road studios, I saw Queeg and Backwards incase anyone is wondering which episodes. Since im also a curry loving larger drinking semi-literate space bum it kinda fits me perfectly, I also use this name for pretty much everything internet related and it is my commander name too :D

Yeah, I came across that reference a couple of years ago (I've not seen the SW prequels, you see). I've flown my Cobra III as Commander Cody for many years in Elite/Oolite - but here is another Commander Cody that I like.

My dads name is Arthur, plus I like the way it sounds and I like the clan motto-

"Fide Et Opera"
or
"By Fidelity and Labour"
