Hardware & Technical Users System Specs

I'm open to suggestions.

I have a suggestion for you, but to be truely effective we need FD / Michaels help on this.

Listing components in a spreadsheet is a great start but with so many variants out there - manufacturers; basic clock speeds; drivers and settings - it can be difficult to make an informed decision.

What we need is a standard to judge against ... cue Heaven (3DMark you need to pay for)

It's free, tests DX11, takes up approx 250Mb of HDD space and the test lasts 260 seconds.

If we all run this test and record the results, including Michael on his minimum spec machine, then you have a like for like test to compare against.

Download the software, run it, and set the following:
  • Preset: Custom
  • API: DirectX11 (as FD are only supporting this)
  • Quality: Low (to give low end users a chance)
  • Tessellation / 3D / Multi-monitor / Anti-aliasing: off
  • Full screen: ticked
  • Resolution : 1280x800 (closest one to the minimum Michael said)

Hit RUN .. click the sound button at the top to silence it, then press benchmark. 260 seconds later you will get some results:

My laptop, for instance:
  • FPS: 108.3
  • Score: 2728
  • Min FPS: 9.4
  • Max FPS: 172.5

This should give your spreadsheet a standardised result column for comparison purposes.

Very nice I fully agree:) downloading heaven now

Looking at the spreadsheet seems someone had a similar idea and used 3DMark - didn't realise there was a DX11 free version. If you can agree on settings to use then you get an apples-2-apples comparison and as everyone knows of 3DMark it's probably the better choice.

I just installed them and pressed "Run Tests", didn't mess with any options otherwise, as you say, it'd mess things up.

Added details, even though not in Alpha. Someone needs to test on an underpowered laptop after all....

How are we going to get the fps? Is a demo benchmark confirmed as being present in the alpha?

I certainly hope so or people will be guessing! ;)

It hasn't been confirmed - that's why using something like 3DMark11 (already on the spreadsheet) is useful to compare like for like. If we can convince FD to run it on their reference machine then as long as yours scores more than his you're all set to go :)

Just downloaded it myself and run the tests .. I prefer them to be honest than the one I suggested as they really stress out the machine. And agreed - no need to change anything - just so happened that a basic performance test is set to the right resolution (1280x720) which FD said was the minimum.

Lots of :( now as my score is pants ... gaming laptop (bit old now) : 3532

I was going to get 3DMark but 1 gig download is just too large for me. I guess it has to run some pretty complicated 3DTests etc.....it says you get a free account to store results, is that account mandatory or can that process be skipped ?

(Please, no suggestions to "get a better internet plan" ;) )

I always knew my GPU is the weak point of my system, but being a laptop there is not much I can do about it.

Just ran the tests:
Haven: 1737
3D Mark 11: 2597
3D Mark: Overall 1750 (ice storm 76764, cloud gate 10320, fire strike 1750)

That fire strike test kicked the living **** out of my poor GPU. Hopefully Elite Dangerous is a little more forgiving.

Hey Styggron - Download 3DMark11 - 270Mb :)

I thought that was the one I started, 3DMark11 and it was 1 gig....I'll try again it may have been the wrong one......checking now.....cheers Liqua. :)

[UPDATE - Yes it is not 1 GIG, 3D Mark was 1 gig not 3DMark11....I accidently went for the wrong one....thank goodness] Cheers Liqua !!! :) :) I'll post my laughable results, I'll get the lowest spec trophy!

@Rog.... yes you and I probably need wireframe. :D

Yeah, confusingly the one that's in the spreadsheet as "3DMark Basic" downloads with 3DMark_v110 in the filename ("3DMark11 Basic" has 3DMark_11_v105 in the filename).

Make sure you put the right ones in the right columns or it'll confuse the issue when people come to look at the results! :p

:eek::eek:

I don't have time to run all the tests now but with the DeepSea one, I could SEE the frames and count them.

I was getting 1-2 FPS :eek::eek::eek::eek:

I'll run the whole test tonight so we can laugh together.

I could not set the preset to "basic" or anything so we'll see.

Well that's odd.

On the 3DMark11 I got 11714 on the 1st test - then when I dialled the GPU and memory boost clock up to 11 - I got 11619.

So it would appear on the face of it that the Asus GPU tweak gizmo does doodlysquat!

:D
