Using HOTAS in the SRV - Turret Control

I'm posting in VR because I'm using an Oculus Rift, but if I should post somewhere else I'll sure you will let mw know.

I am using a Thrustmaster T1600 and TWS throttle. I am at the Guardian site so I need to have an accurate way of using the turrets. They have never really bothered me before and have killed skimmers quite well. I use the mini stick push button joypad (the one above the paddles) for turret control but find it a bit uncontrollable. It seems to veer around quickly - I manage (I kill them eventually) but I tend to go past them - then overcompensate and go past them the other way and lose valuable time, and sometime get shot) - as I said I do manage to kill them but it's frustrating. In none SRV I use that control for the thrusters.

Is there a way of 'calming' the control when used in the SRV only? I don't want to effect the thruster control when flying.

Any of you that have the answer 'git gud' - don't bother, it's neither helpful or particularly funny.

To the rest of you, thank you for any help or suggestions you can come up with.

No idea what you mean by mouse - You saw that I was using VR - do you mean use a mouse as well as joystick and throttle because I think I would run out of hands.

I would start by setting a curve on the little stick.
Thus giving more movement around center giving more precise control.

I'm certain the thrustmaster control software can do this.

To bad thrustmaster keep insisting on placing this under the utterly wrong finger.
If it was under the thumb it would present much finer control.

Personally I use a mini-stick on my throttle for SRV steering control leaving my main stick available for turret control. I find this combination to be very effective as it allows for finite turret control while also being able to steer in turret mode, so it may be worth some consideration.

I also play in VR (Oculus Rift), but the mouse is still the most viable option for turret control for me. It made driving with the HOTAS and using the turret at the same time almost impossible, so I had to keep switching. It is possible to map keys for driving as well though. Switching to KB and mouse when in the turret will allow you to steer and shoot at the same time, but the throttle is more of an issue. In the end I bought myself a steering wheel and pedals. I have to reposition myself at the wheel (and recenter view) when I switch to the SRV, but now I can control the turret with my right hand on the mouse. Steer with my left hand on the wheel and throttle and brake with the foot pedals.

Incidentally, turret control was not the reason for me buying the wheel. Just driving around in the SRV is a lot more fun (and controllable) with it.

You can steer the turret with a mouse and fire with left button, then back to hotas to move. Just an idea

This is exactly what I do. It's pretty easy, even in VR, to let go of the stick and reach for the mouse which is a far more intuitive input device for turret control than the HOTAS (imho).

I've been using my X52 for both driving and turret mode in SRV.

I use C button to switch modes (turret/normal). Once in turret mode I use roll and pitch to control left and right movement of the turret and yaw to control the left/right movement of SRV itself.

I have no idea if the T1600 has twist axis like X52, but if it does, give this a shot. It takes some time to get used to it, but once done it actually works pretty well as you can control SRV and turret at the same time.

Good luck

T16000M+TWCS user here. When in turret view I use the stick to aim and the paddles on the throttle to steer.

If you'd prefer to continue with the analogue mini-stick (I agree it's ultra-sensitive) then you can use something like Joystick Curves or Joystick Gremlin to dampen the input (you might still want to add a small in-game deadzone).

When I switch to turret mode, I use the main joystick to control the turret. The mini stick just wasn't good enough for me. I still use the throttle for forward and reverse, but I assign digital buttons for left/right steering. I don't worry about pivoting or rolling in turret mode, or even boosting for that matter. I hope to install my rudder pedals some day and just use those exclusively for SRV steering, whether I'm in the turret or not.
