Visit an Engineer before your invited.

Try it, you might find it an, enlightening, experience.

(You might need to DSS the surface to reveal it, or be in range, I couldn't tell, it didn't show until after I did.)

when I tried it it was like any other high security surface installation. you get a warning that you're trespassing....then after the time runs out they start shooting.

.....mmm, reverse that. It was more akin to Pew Pew, Go away, Pew Pew, Boom. There was no timer.

Once escorted somebody to Palin's base because somebody'd told them they could buy his CR cargo racks even if they didn't qualify for his engineering services.

Arrived first, in my Vulture, and I was clowning around above his base when my wing-mate showed up in his Annie and the ensuing scene kind of reminded me of this (only a bit more plausible):-

Also, on a related note, I was wondering what it meant when your wing-mate shows as a purple blob on your scanner but I figured it out. 🤨

Yep, that's pretty much all I saw, my ship looked pretty much the same, tho my bow didn't windup poking through Marco Qwent's gullet though. Can't have it all I guess.

Update: I just got two invites! (I have 2 of the same mission!) I guess it's trying to make up for it?

Edit: I turned one in, too bad I am limited to 20 missions, or I would keep this un-completeable invitation, just as a souvenir. oh well.

Time to go terminal! Cheers.

That's odd. I've not met Palin's qualifying 5,000ly from start yet. However, two nights ago I unwittingly landed at his new base. He was just rude and I couldn't even trade commodities, which is what I was there for. No hostile actions though - it never even occurred to me they'd kill you for just visiting!

Scoob.

@Scoob assume you have the introduction though, I think that's what the important thing is.

Isn't the 5kly the thing that gets you the introduction, though?

Question would be how Scoob found his way to Palin's base?
When I watched somebody get exploded, I had to show them where Palin's base was 'cos it didn't/wouldn't show up on his sysmap.
I've read people saying that the new DSS will reveal the location of his base even if you haven't had an invitation nowadays.
Maybe having the location revealed via the DSS over-rides the "unauthorised visitor" flag?

+EDIT+

Oh, wait...

You get the introduction by ranking-up with Qwent.
You then need to do the 5KLy before he'll talk to you.
And then, finally, deliver the 25 sensor fragments to unlock him.

Well you can (could?) because I did that...

Not a good plan to just fly up there in your ship though, that's not how it works.

With the caveat that you need to already be invited.

If you don't already have the invite, via Qwent, going there invites laser death.

Palin isn't at a private base now.

That criteria would still apply to any engineer who IS at a private base, though.
Course, I don't think there's any real reason to want to visit most of the other engineers (aside from actual engineering), is there?

I wonder if this might mean there are bad things in Mel Brandon's future, though?

Unless I'm mistaken, the only two unique items Engineers provide is Palin's cargo racks and the EPTs provided by Palin, Farseer, Martuuk and... Brandon.
All the others are first-tier engineers except Palin and Brandon.
If Palin's been moved to a public base, maybe the same thing is in Brandon's future?

You may be right, I don't remember. I landed a long way away from the base and drove there as part of the trick.
But, yeah, I was just trying to avoid the 5000LY requirement thing.

I definately didn't have Palin on my map when I went though. Had to use co-ordinates... actually I honestly don't remember well enough.
