VOICE control - So looking forward trying this out.

I think with a HOTAS over say a JS then the value of voice recognition is less...but from if you have < HOTAS it is almost essential (not..but almost).

I have a JS and santa has agreed to deliver me a HOTAS...otherwise santa wont be getting the jewellery she wants.

I will however carry on with Voice Recognition for 3 reasons :
1) It is simply cool to yell 'Jump' and have your ship respond...or Gear...or All Stop...or Balls (as my idiot recognition cant understand engage)

2) Multiple (macro style) commands are better managed, so for example I say EVAC, my ship pushes power on a 4 to engines 2 to shields ratio and hits the boost/thrust button (I could add chaff or whatever with a derivation). Equally I have a setup I go to when opening combat, which is a weapons cycle and a 4 to weapons, 2 to engines config, so Battle Stations firstly balances power then pips it into the right 4/2 and deploys hardpoints, I could add to this "Pirate" where it would open the comm's to my current target and let them know unless they jettison booty in the next 5 seconds they will be slaves for the great peoples of Lave. (I dont pirate but thats a good example).

3) Some non-critical bindings, galaxy map, cargo scoop, lights etc, I prefer to not clutter my control sticks with, these are then best left to voice control.

It is a bit of an add eh....but voice attack on its own (also some silly small amount of money) is worth it, I havent bothered with an enhanced voice pack yet....

Me too...however, I have noticed VA seems to lose integrity over time when using Skype at the same time...you have to keep relaunching VA every 10mins - hope there is a simple solution for this?

I use VA with TS3 and never had this issue, perhaps its a bandwidth/Internet related issue?

Also one tip (if you don't already do this) is have it mute your chat program (skype etc) when you need to give commands to VA....I say "Voice attack listen / stop listening" and it turns TS voice off / on and turns on VA to accept commands.
I do this for a few reasons one is I hate to talk over other people in the channel, also helps me focus on commands I need to give my ship ...also friends don't need to hear me giving ship commands! ;)

Just a thought!

You set up a "push to talk" button for your chat program and set that same button to "stop Listening" in Voice Attack.

This is mentioned in the Voice Attack documentation.

I know but for me its easier to do it as a voice command, due to fact when using the hotas my keyboard is little out of reach! :)

Was just a suggestion (if your comment was directed at me).

i think its ridiculous and its a huge hadicap in combat. i have all keys except galaxy map, which is not necessary, binded to my throttle and stick and using them, esp in combat, has become second mature. While u r telling the computer to balance power mines already balanced.

Many rights, much agree. I've got pretty much everything bound to HOTAS controls, and in combat I pretty much use those controls - I'm not flying along yelling "fire! fire! cabbage!" :D But voice is still useful and awesome in other situations, and occasionally in combat as well when I'm dealing with 15 things at once. And macros, so true. Not to mention when wearing a Rift, somehow it just makes it a little more immersive and convenient.

well if it is endorsed by Frontier then I suppose you can place adds here. Maybe I should put my own x-rated voicepack and sell it on here :p
would anyone here pay me for such a thing?

My comment was really for OP rather than you, but np :) Yes, you're getting a conflict between Skype and VA, can happen with other voicechat software as well depending how it uses the mic (voicechat over Steam has no issues, for instance but Teamspeak has the same issue you're experiencing, at least for me). I'm guessing after being on a call for a while, and there's a bit of silence, Skype is silencing the mic or something.

You might have some luck with using push-to-talk on VA, I think it has the option in there somewhere. Your voice command may or may not still go through the Skype channel in that situation, but it should make VA work more reliably. Just a guess, YMMV.

PS, Skype can be a bit heavy on bandwidth. You might want to try things like chat via Steam (just launch ED through Steam, you'll get the overlay), or Teamspeak/Ventrilo.

Wow! Didn't know Steam had the voicechat facility - will check it out! thanks!

Yes voice attack is awesome. For me after training it 3 times the recognition is excellent, and the macros are powerful for quickly doing multi-press actions. It's also much easier to remember voice commands for a lot of stuff than keys you don't use very much. With an Oculus and just a regular controller it makes the game 10x more playable. With a X52 Pro HOTAS it's less necessary, but still nice to have.

The voice pack is a nice extra - I do like that vocal response. I think it's a bit bloated maybe and in some ways it's more work to adjust it to your controls than it is just to set up VA.. but it is nice. Haven't updated to the latest version though which to be fair sounds like a pretty big update. Also fair play to the developer, he does a lot of updates and sends them all out by email for free which is great support for such an inexpensive product.

For those of us with disabilities this makes the game playable.

This thread is not an add btw, I simply was expressing my excitement and passion for using such with this game (new to me all this). The Voice pack is purely optional of course but for me its just like having a ships computer that I can relate to with regards to past sci-fi films and tv stuff.

Yes you probably want to take over manually when combat is all go, simply shields up and tell computer to release control to you ie 'PILOT hand over' or 'Give me control' and go go go

Jeheil - has the right idea with regards to use. :)
