VR in RES

Just tried my Vive in a RES for the first time. I thought that planet surfaces were the largest impacts on gpu and fps, but oh no. Those floating rocks killed my eye candy.

I'll have to use two different settings:

  • HMD Quality 1.5 for RES
  • HMD Quality 2.0 for the rest of the game

I had hoped to get better performance in RES (quite mediocre visuals at 1.5), fingers crossed for continuous optimisation. :)

Running off 6600K and 1080.

same exact boat as you, 6600+1080, and yeah I do all my benchmarking/testing in res sites as they're pretty much the hardest strain on the system. I will say that my cpu was pegged more than gpu with both stock, worth monitoring both in the res sites to see your bottleneck. There apparently is a known performance issue as well even with neither at full utilization. Crossing my fingers too!

What is your supersampling setting in ED set too?

SS at 0.65. 6600K standard default OC to 4.3 Ghz, and standard default OC on Asus Strix 1080. No bottlenecks on cpu or gpu. Temps well below throttling.

It's a bit disappointing really. I thought I'd finally found the sweet spot, only to see that a busy RES brings the game to a stuttering halt.

If I stick to planet surfaces, space stations, NBs and space in general visuals are OK with .65 SS and HMD-Q at 2.0.

Turning HMD-Q down to 1.5 in RES makes everything a blurry mess. :(

Damn this first generation tech... ;)

My current settings which seem to work under most conditions (Including Combat zones) with no jumps/skips/lag:

Nvida Geforce GTX 980TI, which I think a step down from 1080?

Model Draw Distance 90%
Texture Quality High
Shadow Quality Medium
Bloom off
Blur off
Anti-Aliasing off
Super Sampling x1.00
Aambient Occlusion medium
Environment Quality High
Depth of field High
Reflection Quality Low
Meterial Quality Ultra
HMD Image 1.5
Galaxy Map Medium
Terrain Quality Ultra
Terrain Work 50%
Terrain Material Ultra
Terrain Sample High
Jet Cone High

Also using Beta "Allow asynchronous reprojection".

Was thinking of trying .65 SS and HMD-Q at 2.0, but wonder if I will have to drop graphic quality.

Cheers Commander. Looks very similar to my settings (apart from SS and HMDQ), and I also have Draw Distance maxed.

Tried the RES again today with my preferred (SS .65, HMDQ 2.0) settings, and for some reason it was actually playable. But, depending on how far in between the rocks and the amount of action going on I had serious visible dips into 50 fps territory.

I don't know if you know this, but using ctrl + f lets you see the frames on your 2D monitor (tipping your HMD).

Edit: and yes I use asyncronous reprojection. It's no longer beta, and set to on by default. :)
