VR Setup

Hi! All,

I am looking to getting a HTC Vive VR Set cheap off ebay and would love to experience Elite Dangerous in VR but budget is really tight. I know the minimum spec is a 3770k and 4GB GTX980 but would my setup below squeze it for VR on the lowest settings.

Has anybody played it on this setup below ?, any help would be appreciated.

Intel Core i7 3770
16GB Balistixs DDR3 1600
AMD 4GB RX570
x2 USB3 ports
480GB SSD

Honestly, I can't recommend VR with low end gear and an old Vive. VR has come a long way, but if you want a satisfactory experience in Elite: Dangerous you need high end gear and the latest VR.

I had the Vive years ago, and I think I had a 8700k and gtx 1080ti at the time. The experience was not satisfactory.

Best advice is if you really want to see what VR can offer, you need to start saving for a high end rig.

I have a Quest 2 and prior to that a Rift. It ran EDH reasonably ('High' setting) on a 10th Gen Core i7, 32GB Ram and a GTX1650 4GB. I added a AIO water cooler for the GPU and CPU.
That little lot was not cheap and was barely capable of running EDO.

I recently bought a Dell refurbished Dell 7620 laptop with a GTX3060 Laptop GPU (just under £1K with a discount code). I now run it in Ultra and OMG what a difference! Worth every penny. The 7620 can be had with a GTX3050ti, or a GTTX3050 for a couple of hundred less. Not sure what the perfomance is like but the benchmarks say the 3060 is 20% quicker than the 3050ti.

I also now have a totally mobile VR setup ...

Must admit I'm not fussed about playing it on the lowest settings tbh so you would say it juts would work at all with these spec ?

Lotta chokepoints as others have pointed out but if you insist on playing EDVR a few recommendations:

Run it directly through the launcher. A purchased account is still an account. SteamVR will run too much unnecessary crap in the background. Even that trash on there that promises VR performance boosts requires SteamVR to run and it's just pumping out false values. It's like downloading extra RAM.

Optimize tf outta your PC. There's way too much to list here so dig into tutorials if you're not familiar. Win 10 & 11 alone require 8 gigs of memory just to idle. You want as few processes running in the background as possible.

Lowest settings on everything aren't always best. You need to spread what little resources you have across the board so mem, CPU and GPU are each putting in a fair amount of work. Unfortunately, there's no one size fits all for this as space, planetfall, stations and settlements tap from different sources. I've heard there's some 3rd party app that auto adjusts settings for ED but no idea what it's called or if it's still even whitelisted.

*It's called EDProfiler and the thread for it is actually a few down from yours.

Set your desktop resolution to its lowest before firing up the ED launcher. I had to do this on my slowtato before upgrading and it made a pretty good difference performance wise, even with other apps.

Best of luck and welcome to the world of VR 🍻
