VR to remain same in odyssey (with bug fixes)

This is quite a blow. I only got Odyssey because I mistakenly assumed that it would support full VR at some point after console launch. And the only reason I play ED to begin with is because I can play it in VR.

It also sounds as if there will be no more VR support at all in the future, meaning that once new content is released for Odyssey any VR specific bugs that pop up won't be fixed either. Let alone any hopes anyone might have had for performance optimizations down the road.

Tragic.. just tragic. They are dumping what is absolutely the finest feature in this game. Played Elite since launch for a long time with just head tracking tech. And it was a really fun experience. When I got VR a couple of years back though... it became magical.

There is absolutely no comparison between the two game modes.

As for their FPS dreams... give up. There are 10 year old games out there that had better team FPS implementations than Fdev have managed. You will never compete.

VR and your galaxy generation really are the stand out features of this game. Fix the damn planetary tech, and start seriously thinking about ways to improve VR... consoles will have VR as a standard feature eventually, why not take advantage of that and invest in the future...

Tragic

I refuse to play Odssey any more, runs like shiat anyways.
I have 2500+ hrs in VR Horizions, i'm not going back to a flat screen. I built my whole gaming rig around running ED on a G2 headset.
If they woulda focused on what made ED what it is and improved it woulda been a lot better than this horse shiat they are shoving down our thoughts. All we needed was atmospheric planets, ship interiors, land on water worlds and we got this horse shiat Oddsey update instead.

Not moving forward with VR…….Big Mistake…….HUGE !!

Well, VR will remain the same for me in Horizons

Odyssey is now a refund request... screw this boring trainwreck of a DLC.

I couldn't stand paying $48 to downgrade Horizons to Odyssey standards.

Odyssey told me I'd get a pizza and all I got is a slice of processed cheese on a piece of soggy bread with ketchup.

Hmm - who knows. VR from s stationary point of view (in vehicle / Ship), is different from on foot. Alex VR did it, but that was built from the ground up with that in mind.
I'm sure there is more to it than we think.
As a dev chap of 34 years (hell what happened to my life), I know for certain that things are always much more difficult than people think.

EDIT: changed often to always.
The number of people over the years who have just said "surely it's just a case of copy and pasting from x"
But I just spent a happy hour or two wandering around a guardian site in VR using the 3rd person camera. It works.

Well, I don`t think I`ll be buying any more expansion packs if there not VR compatible and none of this VR Pancake mode,

Big let down, very disappointing.

Odyssey is dead to me, I tried to embrace it, I really did try.

Why so few transport missions, On the mission board it`s just swamped with fetch this fetch that
Very few deliveries, 128 Tones of X.

FD needs to play some VR games...

StarTrek Bridge Commander to see how the Arm animation works with a VR Controler
For Gun control Sniper Elite 4 VR.

Odyssey could have been so much better if it had VR 3d stereoscopic, and VR controllers to point the gun or move.

Sorry Letting off some steam.

I mapped the on foot controls to my Index controllers specifically for this 3rd person VR mode. It works well and proves that Fdev could do it properly with a modicum of effort. It's just sad sad sad that they don't see the potential of full VR support for on-foot. Sad.

You lying sacks of sh*te, you took out money with the promise of vr and now you're telling us that sh*t flat screen is all we're getting and thats it... I want my money back.
I'm sick of this sh*t from games companies... and FDev in general.. well laugh it up because you will never see another penny from me now.

I'm done, and am half tempted to wipe my cmdr and uninstall this frankly pos game and walk away never looking back.

Just commenting on some views expressed in this thread:

1. It is disappointing that FD has decided to stop VR development for the game going forward. IMO ED is one of the best VR experiences of any game I've played and, contrary to some views, VR is no longer a niche area. Apple, Facebook and Microsoft are all throwing mega bucks at the technology right now.

2. I don't agree that it is a technical problem or players' expectations are too high. There are plenty of VR games that use FP view and Hello Games (a relatively small developer compared with FD) has done a great job of implementing FP VR in NMS. Before anyone suggests that VR is too difficult to implement in ED they really should take a look at other VR games. In fact, if you have NMS take a look at the VR transition from the ship to the player on ground. Really makes FD's efforts look pretty ordinary.

3. I'm just a guessing but suspect the FD's reasons for relegating VR are variously:
  1. It doesn't have the support of David Braben. He is still the largest owner of FD and has publicly stated that he did not think VR was a good experience in ED.
  2. FD has too much work on its plate. It is now publishing games for others as well as its own titles. I even received an advertisement for a new game from FD around the time Odyssey was being released.
  3. The VR community is relatively small compared with other users, so it comes down to a cost/benefit analysis.
  4. As an MMO it's hard to match VR and non-VR users in a FPS. They just don't work the same.
I would stress these are just guesses, but FD has not really explained its decision so need to read between the lines.

In any case, since the release of Odyssey I have had a poor VR experience in ED. So much so that I'm playing in 2D ATM as I can play with ultra settings, no stutter and a smooth transition between loading screens and without that nasty 2D screen in VR. The only issue for me is whether I can go back to 2D and still enjoy the game or drift off into other VR games. Time will tell but don't worry, if I stop playing ED, then someone will get my stuff :)

I’ve just had a little dollop of extra disappointment added to the VR dish; one of the recent updates has changed the on-foot vanity cam behaviour - now when stepping into your CMDR avatar they disappear instead of your view clipping into them, so no more first-person body and watching my boots leave footprints on alien surfaces 😥

Why U fix dis, FDev? 😅

Ahh I just don't get it, at a time when we are just getting to the point where 4K gaming GPUs and Headset are available and able to run nicely, the best VR space sim and application of the tech is backing away. Where's the spirit, the spunk, the innovation! Its like Frontier just lacks the dev talent, leadership and culture to get it done and would rather relegate it all to the too hard basket. Other studios are implementing and all manner of cool tech like VR, DLSS, HDR, Ray tracing etc... I reckon there's probably not a single Dev in the whole team whose actually played the game in VR for a substantial number of hours. When youre competing against 2D games like Battlefield and Star Citizen, VR was the one area ED was numero uno.

aside from the current bugs does this mean

1.All VR development stops
or
2. All VR development stops but we will continue to optimize current systems

just looking for some clarification for this.. I straight up bought elite because VR
Its the first one, no active development on VR (which probably also means very limited bug fixes)

VR got the bare minimum support for the foreseeable future and we should be grateful for 2D projection in Odyssey aka VR users got the shaft

"Now on the FDev store:

Elite Dangerous Horizons Classic: offline, solo-only, full Horizons stellar forge and planet tech, full VR, code hooks for any future user-maintained online BGS database...."

....

... oh wow, what a beautiful dream ... Yawn, back to reality.

For these two points i disagree.
VR community is constantly growing, just take a look at Steam stats.*
And for the second point , had you ever tried for example Wynecraft (mmo mod for minecraft playable in pancake mode but you can play it like another mod in VR with Vivecraft mod ) ? It is the perfect example of MMO than can be cross played without any problem by VR users AND pancake users.
*It is like you were in the early 80's and say that there is too few C64 and Amstrad CPC 464 users to bring up a viable market for video games, di they do that at this time ? NO.
What is the heck nowadays about these lazy devs who say " i's impossible to do ", had they lost all their taste for new technologies ?
It's sad , very sad.

I'm so sad... My suspicion is that Frontier figured that the influx of FPS players would compensate for the VR players checking out. A gross miscalculation, if you ask me. Those FPS players will come, take three looks, get bored of the game, leaving it behind.

Fdevs are literally a decade behind the development curve in 1st person shooters and looking at the gameplay the whole grinding away for hours to get upgrades isn't going to appeal to traditional first person shooter players. Who on Earth is going to move from Call Of Duty/Apex Legends/Rainbow 6 to playing in the same base stations collecting materials or scanning plants! That style of game will be more niche than VR is now, if you even consider VR niche.

FDevs pls at a very least, fix the VR performance issues so that we can play Odyssey as we normally do in Horizons with the (still to be fixed) visual enhancements and enable stereo display in HMD with xbox/KB+M controller on foot; no need to use VR controllers. That should not be hard to do.
