Waste Disposal: hull spontaneously disintegrates

So I am quietly shooting up the cannisters, noob style so stationary.

Despite the fact that I am not moving and I can't see anything around me my hull keeps spontaneously exploding, and there's no feedback from the game about why: which makes learning rather hard. (And after I explode I can see there is literally nothing around my ship's exploding hulk).

Help?

Spontaneous Explosions

Make sure to watch your heat meter (opposite the thrust indicator). If you close your heat sinks or go silent and don't have a very good understanding of the heat management system, you will eventually overheat and explode. The delete key toggles running silent mode, and the heat sinks can be accessed like any other installed module on your right hand HUD element. Hope this helps.

It sounds like your overheating, check your temperature gauge on the left hand side of the scanner. This happened to me when I started :)

So I've found a bit more.

It seems my ship is spontaneously overheating (***?!?)

Is this because, BY DEFAULT, I'm put straight into silent running mode?

Why on earth would you put a newbie into a ship with the default setting of "will inevitably explode in a couple of minutes"?!?!?!

Edit:
This also happens in Multiplayer: so the sole result of my first foray into multiplayer is I've ended up with an even worse ship than the normal starter because I can't afford to replace the starter...

Mmmh, I've never been put in silent running mode by default. Have checked your key binds?

That's the subject of another question :) Loading the Warthog setup it shows blank keybindings so I can't see what my key bindings are nor how to change them.

Edit: One good result of losing my ship in multiplayer: I got to play with all the switches etc on the Warthog and discovered the EAC switch turns silent running on/off.

Its not default, but it might remember you selected it until you unselect it, even after death possibly.

Key bindings - click in the box then press the button you want to use.

Doesn't appear to work like that for the Warthog: all the key bindings show blank even though there are bindings, eg EAC is bound to Silent Running.

Maybe at the top you need to select custom.

The starting normal ship is the worst ship you can get. If you ended up with less than 1,000cr you can clear save if you want.

On the Warthog throttle check your EAC switch if I recall correctly. It's the left most bottom switch. Toggle it and see what happens.

If you're not seeing your warthog bindings in there already, something's wrong...

When I loaded up mine it showed them all fine. :)
