WCCFTech - Odyssey Interview - From the Darkness of Space to the Light of Uncharted Planets

Interesting new mission type in there...

You can be this faction foot soldier and take missions to destroy target settlements, or rather not destroy them but get rid of the people that own those settlements so that you can move in and take them over. But also, if you run into another player, if they're against you you either have to back out or you've got to defend yourself.

Could definitely get gnarly if some players are taking missions to take over a settlement while others are on defence...

Aaaand, more VR detail, I guess...

Elite is obviously a very nice VR game. You sit in the cockpit, and you're in front of the stars. It lends itself perfectly to VR. I'm really glad that we did add VR support because it's pretty awesome, it is quite an experience. Being able to run around on foot, though, is very much a different experience. We're still looking at the way that we would tackle that if we need to. Or if we decide that we think we can get a good way of doing it. And sure, like, that's something that we'll tackle, but for the moment, we have to focus on the actual main experience and getting that working the way that we really want it to feel. So on day one, there won't be any VR support. But we're not saying never, it's just we need to focus our efforts elsewhere right now.

Im interested in someone hopefully confirming what is meant by FORM FLOAT.

Chris Gregory said the following "one day you would be able to get out of your ship and form float, and we are actually doing that."

Naturally my first thought was zero g movement in space. However i also had a nagging thought that this was Frontier going into Dev talk.

Looking up form float with regard to programming brought up Floats with regard to getting fractions of integers.
Im presuming what Chris is saying in lay persons speak is they can now get greater accuracy than previously for positioning objects. Hence whereas previously things were calculated at ship scale within the galaxy, they can now go down to far smaller scales when calculating the position of objects. Perhaps say in the past they did things down to a metre scale, now they can go down to a centimetre or even millimetre of precision were required.

I believe that what it means is that the article wasn’t properly proof read.

In this context...

" in terms of David's commitment to the idea that one day you would be able to get out of your ship and form float, and we are actually doing that. "

Just sounds like a typo and meant to say something about being on foot.

Big credit to the interviewer, they went to the sub and asked for community questions to put in the interview. The interview also seems to hint that new vehicles (something I really, really want) may come with Odyssey:

Q: Will there be additional SRVs or fighters in Odyssey? What about new ships or reworks for older ones?

A: There are plenty of ways to get around in Odyssey and we look forward to sharing more over the coming months.

The slightly more concrete claims on NPCs in the flesh were intriguing too:

Suddenly all of the planets have a lot more activity, they've got a lot more people on them, various industrial settlements that are actually doing stuff. For me, it's the idea of being able to, as a player, go to those locations and interact with them and have that kind of more personal experience with the various people that are in the galaxy that otherwise have previously been just faces on boards or, you know, fairly distant inbox messages and that sort of thing. Now they'll actually be there doing stuff. It's gonna feel really good.

If they actually use multiple minor factions at the settlements (say, you have to drive out one faction but not take on the others), that could add some neat twists potentially too :)

I've told you before sunshine, keep your banana-pants done up, or I'll get the Man from Del Monte to come visit you .... you can be sure, he'll start out by saying "Oh No..."
Banana juicings only happens when skin is sealed to prevent leakings, pls learns banana exo-biologies.
However, banana presumes this is dirty ol' pirate hat dreamings about banana innards again...with pants fantasy, on head maybe, like anarchist!?

Banana just excited because of bgs tie-in and hints of other things...good interview i thinks with lots of stuff.

p.s
Man from del monte already say no...haves ffyfes sticker..

There are plenty of Japanese games on Steam where I can have a "more personal experience" with NPCs, but they look at lot better than ED's - so I'm gonna carry one emailing them from the safety of my ship, thanks.

How many 3d avatars have you seen in ED so far? None I think.

Be optimistic man, maybe they'll all be as attractive as the Japanese ones you ... well, whatever you do with them 😟

Its all starting to sound a bit desperate if Frontier are resorting to trying to drum up a bit of interest using a hack outfit like wccftech. They have about as much credibility in PC circles as the Sunday Sport used to have for the whereabouts of Elvis...
