We have a dream

I would love to have a Limpet bobble head for my krait mk2 so i can send it to bring me a cup of coffee from the coffee machine i cant reach. but that wont happen anytime soon

Hull Repair Limpets have a similar issue if you're repairing yourself - you have to launch them with no target selected. So that gives us at least three limpets that work in 'no target selected' mode, and for two of them it's optional.

Gah...this is tricky!

Edit: and decon limpets as well! That's four of the blessed things!
It would probably help if all stuff affecting your own ship gets handled via right hand panel. We are still not there though... ;)

PS
You could also use context menus.

To clarify: This would work similar to the docking procedure via left hand panel. Target a ship or object, go right and it opens further options like fire limpet type X, Y, Z.

You're all forgetting the easiest option--add more keybindings!! I mean, it's not like the current binds list is seventeen pages yet.

how about a 20 minute delay when you switch limpet controllers to simulate loading different controller software....cause muh imerhhhhhzun!

And while they are at it, it would be great if they could fix the broken scaling on them. Of course, that might require improvements to the net code to work with larger ships or simply the removal of the class 7 controllers to avoid horrific lag and/or desyncing, but that's something they need to work on anyway as it is currently limiting a few other game mechanics.

same way we do now - just assign them to different fire groups. functionally it would be exactly the same, you would have different limpet controllers listed in your fire groups and you can assign them same as now. Only difference would be you only have a single module instead of 1 per controller.

Exactly! Why do people think we would need different UI or buton configuration?
Common sense really.

You ninja'd me :)

I was just typing the same!

Yep, I was over-thinking it. For some reason I was thinking the fire groups section would need to extend horizontally, but that's not the case at all. All that would happen is that when you fit a limpet controller it would give you options for each type of limpet. Here's one I mocked up just now:

Nice idea. But I am almost sure that several special controllers is a FD way to prevent the overall convergence to one universal tank ship, armed to teeth and doing almost everything. Maybe except Exploration...

True, but they’re not being very consistent. For instance, we don’t buy collector limpets, we buy limpets. We don’t buy prospector limpets, we buy limpets. They’ve already started down that road, they may as well finish the trip.

Besides, every ship would benefit equally. I agree that it would lessen the need for specialised builds though, and I’m kind of on the fence about that.

Yes, the idea is nice. Also the idea of one universal scanner (where you can select what will be scanned) is nice. But...

A slight problem with this approach is that prospector limpets work completely differently to the others when it comes to firing them when you already have the maximum out - all the other types just don't fire the limpet, whereas prospectors self-destruct the oldest one. I'm not sure how this would fit in if you had a large controller and a mix of prospector and collector limpets out, for example - you don't want to fire the prospector and end up destroying your collectors ... but conversely if you accidentally fired off one collector too many you'd have no way to clear just one of them to fire a prospector again if it didn't self-destruct them.

Context-sensitive I think is the better approach, but requires slightly less than universal limpets. Still, you could cover most of the functions with just two internals spent, and that's fairly straightforward to do nowadays ... or all of them with three, which still isn't too bad. Much better than having eight types, anyway.

Limpet Controller 1: collection.
- fire untargeted: acts as untargeted collector
- fire targeted at scoopable: acts as targeted collector
- fire targeted at thing with hatch: acts as hatchbreaker (or this could be in analysis)

Limpet Controller 2: analysis
- fire untargeted: acts as prospector
- fire targeted at alien: acts as research
- fire targeted at non-alien: acts as recon

Limpet Controller 3: assistance
- fire untargeted: works on self
- fire targeted: works on target
Fixes in following priority order, and obviously you can't refuel yourself:
- fuel (down to emergency life support)
- decontamination
- fuel (down to reserve tank only)
- repair
- fuel (generally)

yeah, but as I half-jokingly said, there are those grind monkeys who won't be happy until you have to spend materials to change the function of the controller and wait 20 minutes for "immersion".

Sorry, not a good idea on any level considered. You already have universal limpets, so specific types of controllers make sense - they are an equivalent of specific tools for specific jobs and I don't see how making them all become one thing will make anything better, more logical or more fun.

Adding to that: only thing Id put in is that limpet controllers have limpet storage, so you dont have to sell the limpets if you swap ships.
