Weird line across the skybox

am I alone with this? It hasn't always been there and I'm not sure if it's my settings or a bug. Everything else runs and looks good...well, to me at least.

Crank your galaxy textures up to 4096 and it will get rid of it.

yup... edit your GraphicsConfiguration.xml file and <changegalaxybackground> texturesize to 4096

Does it have a hit on FPS or is it one of those magical things that has a big effect on the look but no effect on the work rate? Should I change one and set that as my setting e.g. change LOW to 4096 and choose that or set them all to 4096?

Also, I'm assuming the below is the part I need to edit?

<GalaxyBackground>
<Low>
<LocalisationName>$QUALITY_LOW;</LocalisationName>
<TextureSize>512</TextureSize>
</Low>
<Medium>
<LocalisationName>$QUALITY_MEDIUM;</LocalisationName>
<TextureSize>1024</TextureSize>
</Medium>
<High>
<LocalisationName>$QUALITY_HIGH;</LocalisationName>
<TextureSize>2048</TextureSize>
</High>
</GalaxyBackground>

Thanks

I'm clearly not tech minded!

Change it based on your texture setting.

If you have textures set to high in your Elite settings (recommended) then change the 2048 value.

It does have a minor performance impact.

Brilliant, I'll have a play around this evening.

Thank you

Doesn't seem to affect FPS in any way, but will use more video ram... You can easily check how much of your video cards ram is in use using FPSVR..

There are lots of settings in that file, I have had a good play and found some settings that make everything look great without affecting performance much at all :), make a backup of the file and play away lol

Yes, you have got it, don't be afraid to experiment with the settings, I have all of mine on 4096 except ultra, but I also have 11GB of video memory etc.. The higher you set them, the more video ram will be used.. For Ultra, I have mine set to 8192 for example.. Just save the default file somewhere, then experiment away until you find what works for you.. :p

For now I've just boosted the texture to 4096 and upgraded a couple of settings in game. Not only is the weird line no longer there but there's a noticeable improvement on the look of the game with no noticeable downside to play-ability. So thank you (all) very much.

I've saved my original config file elsewhere and will have a further play around to see what mix of settings works best for me.

I'll sign off with the obligatory, yet always true, "I love Elite in VR."

Yup, I agree, my game using the Vive Pro and 2080ti is pretty close to perfect... I have a Pimax on the way, but it is going to have to be pretty 'stella' <- See what I did there... To compete with the Vive Pro :p Not the FOV but the blacks are awesome, and with the graphics mods I sometimes find my self just cruising around looking at space lol, even the Suns look awesome lol

just a quick aside, Planets can be made to look pretty great with the settings as well :)

I made a tweak to the planet textures too, nothing too much but it’s a nice addition - I’m only on a 1070 so need to be frugal with my settings :)

On a similar note, I’ve often noticed the background ‘space fog’ in VR which tends to look far worse in VR than it does on a monitor and wondered if there’s anything tweak wise that can be done to alleviate that a little? Having searched the forums and Google it seems there are options for removing many effects like smeary canopies, the new station haze and so on but nothing that I can find relevant to the current iteration of the game.

I don’t know if anyone has a solution, some ideas of its its generally accepted that it is what it is for one reason or another.

EDIT: For clarity I mean the areas of grey cloudiness against the black galaxy background and not the moving space dust you use to judge vectors when flying FA Off.

Not sure about the fog, but I have done most other 'haze' mods and am really happy with the VR environment now... But also have not found a setting for the fog etc.. Performing the mods did have a positive effect on my FPS however...

I got those when I put everything to med. Putting the skybox back to high fixed it.

Someone reported a similar bug in non-VR and he insisted that he had his resolution in the highest. I can't remember what came out of it but it could be related.
