Well I went and did it.

Jumped into a black hole and did not throttle black quickly enough and the first thing I hear is glass cracking. I went and cracked my canopy and I am still 4kly out from Sag A. I guess the upside is that I got a nice screen shot as I hit FSD and was escaping the gravity lens.

Added screenie

I fell into suns quite a few times to and from Saggy A... Something about sitting for 18 hours in the pilot seat and tiredness... Still carried on though. got back with around 78% on the hull... Dared not look at the components..

After getting to Saggy A, I dropped out of Super cruise, killed the engines, set a hammock in the cargo bay, Sealed the door and passed out. Let's face it, not every day does one get to stare into a super-massive black-hole before going to sleep.

Whence I returned to the bubble, I sheepishly paid my 10k credit repair bill and handed in my 15mil of data.

... And changed my entire wardrobe of underpants. Picking hologlass out of your breakfast is very uncomfortable when you consider there's only one place on the ship that is made of hologlass.

Cracked mine on a White Dwarf 2 days ago. I'm some 37 kly from home atm and still not turning back - that canopy should be able to handle a lot more abuse after the first cracks have formed, so I'm not too worried. Just need to be careful is all. Should have it fixed in a month or so :)

When getting shot up, the cracks appear down at around 30-40% of hull damage from experience.. Hopefully the pressure doesn't blow it out for you.

Safe returns!

Odd, wandered unexpectedly into system with black hole last night. All I got was proximity warning, told too close to object and thrown out of SC. Oh and another 1% off hull.
I had no time to react, but guess that would depend on size of hole and angel on entering system?

Not a careless explorer, but this time around I have 5% damage to hull and a lot of close calls (i.e. entering systems through the middle of stars).

1%? I guess that makes sense.

every other time I dropped out for being too close, I gained 2%.
1st: 0%
2nd: 2%
3rd: 2%
4th: 4%

Not necessarily, the canopy is basically a non-targetable subsystem; it's entirely possible to get the hull down to 0% without having a single crack in it, or have it blown up on an otherwise almost intact ship. It all depends on where you take fire. I think there's also an element of randomness on whether it took damage or not during emergency drops too. At any rate, my hull's down to 90% and I just had the first cracks form. I've seen others fly further and longer with canopies in a much worse state so I'm not about to go panic mode and turn back - I just need a few thousand ly more to reach the self imposed secondary goal of my current trip, then I can turn back. Should be fine - it's the bubble that's dangerous to fly in :)

At any rate, thanks for the good wishes :)

You'll be fine. When you look at the cracks on your window, look at my picture and think "well, it's not that bad, I'm still breathing" and chug on. ;)
