Newcomer / Intro What am I doing wrong...

I wanna love this game I really do,but I think I'm just too thick to play it....

Got a mission to find a black box 15k credits, lovely easy money. So I fly to the system, search around and I'll be buggered if I can find a black box.I flew to unidentified sources..nothing,flew to the beacon...nothing.So after 45 mins of flying around I decided to come ask the nice chaps and chapesses on the forums, before I go flipping insane and quit with the hump again.

Should I be looking for something else on my scanner,a map marker or something?? Or is it just pot luck that ya find one??

Cheers

There are two parts of that mission. One will tell you the system to look in, the other is to enter Unidentified Signal Sources with in that system until you find one. Also remember, check the box when you pick it up (left menu/cargo) it will likely be an illegal item/stolen. If it is, you will have to sneak it into the place you took the mission. Not so hard at outposts (platform/open space ports), but much trickier in the regular ports.

OK cool cheers,so just gotta keep hunting.
Now and I think you know the next question;) how to get it into the port if its illegal.Im sure its not a case off just fly in as fast as ya can and hope ya dont spotted.Or fly in get caught, and tell the officer you've never seen them black boxes before...honest.

Once you're inside the station, the scanning won't register... So if you're entering and suddenly get the alarm that you're being scanned, just enter ASAP. Once inside, coast is clear.

If you read the sections of the document in this thread about Smuggling and also Running Silent, that should get you in safely!

Essentially, if you are carrying stolen or proscribed goods in a system and you are scanned, you will be given a fine or made "wanted".
Have u hunted down wanted ships? Well now you are on the other side :)
So the trick is to avoid being scanned and having the illegality revealed. It's the space stations where there are many police and a narrow letter box entrance where you will have most trouble "smuggling". Once you are inside, there is no scanning so the aim of the game is to get in before you are scanned.

Alternatively the open space platforms rarely have system police about so you can land and dispose of your goods without worry.

NB: If you do become wanted, you can use the Station Services to access Contacts, and then the Pilot's Federation. You can pay off the fines there that make you "wanted". Sometimes it's just a fine with no wanted status. But ignore at your peril. If u leave it too long, you will become wanted! Not sure what the timing is on that.

heh, have fun smuggling!

my god Im trying to play a game,if I wanted to read a book I would have bought one ;) but cheers for the link and advice.

Beginning to think this isnt the game for me,but I will plug away. Its just the trading is sooo boring, wanted to try something different.Im guessing this is gonna get expensive when I keep getting blown up.

This game has an absolutely brutal learning curve. It always has, and it always probably will. You can spend several hours reading and watching youtube videos just to get a handle on what to do, let alone hours to master your ship. This really is different from a LOT of games out there. part of the game is actually learning how to play the game! Be patient. To be honest, the retrieval missions are not geared towards new players. They require a fair bit more knowledge and skill to complete.

Same here. I just leave the landing gear up and boost through the opening (making sure I'm straight).

I was just getting bored doing trade mission after trade mission, theres only so much fish I cart around till my air fresheners run out;)

But I will crack on,Im sure the rewards when ya do get a handle on what is going on are worth it.Too much of an expansive world out there to just ignore and supercruise past in my rather smelly ship.

Well, let me help you a little bit with this, with a suggestion to keep your sanity. You have learned about illegal goods. There is a bonus for those because the gameplay is more challenging. Rather than smuggling, try some of the other missions, trading missions (take x items to y space station), find us (x items and return), etc. These are almost as common, provide steady, legal income, and show how the trading game works. Another avenue is to fly into the unkown, in any direction, and learn to explore unkown systems. There are no missions to do this, but the reward is relative peace in flying, very few interactions with Player Characters, and the odd interdictions of NPC's!

The learning curve for this game is daunting, but I will tell you that you are probably at the 75-85% mark of what you need to know to function within the game...but only about 5% of what you need to know to play and stay out of trouble. If you continue to need help ask here, or you can PM me (send an email through the forum), I do not mind trying to fill in the blanks for you!

when you've been through the letterbox plenty of times you'll realise just how quick you can shoot through... i've had to rush a cobra in at full throttle to avoid scans

wow!!wasn't expecting so much help and advice so quick, cheers!(gotta get a bit slushy here)...great community, very nice, helpful and understanding of us newbies.
You all on the payroll or something??cause you've just convinced me too crack on with this game and live with my smelly fish.

Im so happy I will do the fish dance...
