Ships What are some good ships for getting started in combat zones?

I have a 54 LY Python and I’m doing fine in HazRes sites, one-on-one. But as soon as I set foot in a conflict zone, I get chewed up and have to limp to a space station. I have a Federal Corvette miner, and I heard the Corvette’s a great ship for combat zones, but I want to learn in something that’s smaller and will teach me strategy and how to be smart in a fight, and will make me a good pilot. What are some good ships and basic builds to get me going in combat zones and get some combat bonds?

I'd go with a Krait. Its got a lot of maneuverability and can take a hit, the addition of a fighter is nice but I wouldn't take one with you if you are in it for the credits.

That being said, I unlocked Juri Ishmaak with a Vulture armed with a burst laser and frag cannon.

'54 Ly Python' does not sound at all like a combat setup. Done right, any ship can be good for learning combat, but if your preference lies in flying python-corvette style ships, why not learn in a python properly fitted for combat? I much prefer flying medium ships, so while I do have two small ships setup for combat, I much prefer fighting in my Chieftain, Krait or (recently) Clipper.

As for cz combat, in a python you may well attract too much attention so a smaller ship might be better - or a medium with SLF support.

You can actually get some reasonable mileage from a Viper 3 or 4, but you'll probably find yourself wanting more firepower to take down bigger targets.

Above that range, the Chieftan is my personal combat zone favorite. It's small enough that it doesn't draw undue attention, fast and maneuverable enough to handle small targets, and has enough firepower to handle big ones. Other ships in that size and price range also tend to fare pretty well.

Python and Krait sized ships can fare well too, but really need to be built with taking a hit in mind because you're going to draw some attention. Large ships will guarantee lots of attention, but the firepower treats small enemies like swarms of eagles as a trivial threat.

As far as build goes, the key is remembering that a combat zone is all dedicated ships. Bring a weapon combination that's good for stripping shields(lasers, etc) and taking out hulls(frags, multi cannons, etc). Use a decent shield and equip optional slots with batteries, MRP, HRP. To really go wild, consider armored internals and things like that instead of light weight. Use shield boosters, chaff, and heat sinks in utility slots. Keep in mind that any scanners or non combat modules are a directly wasted slot for handling combat zone duty and you'll be built to handle it---after learning how to survive long enough to be familiar with CZ areas, you might find yourself wanting a collector limpet controller and cargo bay for limpets(CZ is a great source of some engineering materials), but I'd recommend full survival building until you're comfortable with getting kills.

Strategy helps too---don't necessarily go for "juicy targets", and if possible try to be an opportunist and attack otherwise engaged/weakened enemies. Aim for volume of kills, rather than singling out big paydays. Singling out an unengaged Anaconda, for example, is a great way to have piles of smaller ships around by the time you finish it off--and it will almost certainly get help from some of them, increasing your odds of having to bail out. Far better to attack the smaller ships with their shields down, then hit the Anaconda as your NPC faction gravitates to it and starts to concentrate fire on it.

I don't hang out in CZs any more, preferring haz res and CNBs. But when I did, I took my python and could stay until I was brain numb or I ran out of frag ammo. It is not as nimble, nor as fast as my Krait, but it can take a lot more punishment than it can.

Fighting in a Python is easy once learned, but it is not intuitive. Takes a bit of practice. Here's my fighting (pve) Python:

It does cost a bit more though, if you're strapped for credits. :(

EDIT: I have taken my vette, but you have to stay on the fringes of the fighting, because you WILL become the center of attention rather quickly. :)

I'm down to a few options I'm considering. I'll probably get a Viper and play around on that for some bounty hunting, but use another ship as well. Maybe a Fer de Lance (I heard they're pretty good at what they do), but I'm more drawn to something like a combat-only Python with Drag Drives, Krait, Alliance Chieftain or Challenger.

Never got on well with the FDL, but that's just me. My two favorite medium sized ships for bounty hunting are the Python and Krait. I also have a Vulture, which is more of a fun ship that I take out occasionally as 'something different'.

I prefer shield tanks, so tend to stay away from fed and alliance ships. YMMV.

Thanks for the input. I ended up getting a Krait, and got all the combat bonds I needed. I tried out an FdL, but I had more fun with the Krait. The Krait's kind of an ugly ship, but the canopy view is great and it sounds pretty.

The Krait is much more versatile than a FDL, slightly cheaper than the Python, and a bit faster. But one less C6 slot than a Python.

The hardpoint arrangement is slightly better IMO than that of the Python, and with the same internals I'm not short of power to drive three large beams. :)

I named her Ugly's Revenge. :D

Can anyone help me with combat loadouts for the Krait & FdL? For my quick test builds, I A-rated everything, and added pulse lasers, multi-cannons, and a single plasma accelerator on top of the ship.

But I really suck with the plasma accelerator. I was missing so often that it was a waste of a hardpoint. What are viable alternatives?

What about engineering, so I can get the most out of the Krait & FdL? I gained access to most of the engineers when I was engineering an exploration vessel, but have little experience engineering something to be an effective combat machine.

I won't claim that this is a "effective combat machine", but it works really well for me. I know you said you have access to most of the engineers, but this one is mostly G5 engineered.

Disclaimer: This is not a hard-core build by any stretch. When I'm serious about harvesting pirates I use a different ship.

I use my Krait as a general runabout in the bubble, that can fetch materials as well as play in Haz Res and CNBs (my two choices for bounty hunting). I stink with PAs and have settled on a 'simpler-is-better' approach for my weps loadouts. I initially had overcharged MCs in the mediums, but found that the Krait is so good at getting in close that the double-shot frags just do SO much more damage.

I no longer have a FDL, nor a build I can show you, but my last weps config for my FDL consisted of one huge G5 efficient beam and four G5 double-shot frags. Yea, I like frags... ;)
