What are some neat things to look at and take pictures with within a few thousand Ly of Sol?

NGC 7822. ;)

There are several nebulae of course, but I particularly like the Veil East and Veil West nebulae for screenshots, since they're a bit different than the rest. The Bubble Nebula also is a nice place to visit.

If you're heading in the south/south-eastern direction, feel free to check out the Seagull Nebula and visit the famous Hell Port (Seagull Sector DL-Y d3) :). You can stop by various other Nebulae in that general direction, if you want ;)
I also recommend Eta Carinae and surrounding region - there are many massive B/O-class star systems, giants, etc. - always worth to check out

Some of those hand-placed nebulae not too far from Sol use unique shapes specifically designed to make those nebulae look like how they look through a real-life telescope. LBN 623 is a hand-crafted purple-pyramid nebula just 600 LY from Sol. The nebula is quite small so you'd need a system fairly close to it to get it as a good visual backdrop. There are three known ELWs in the LBN 623 Sector (LBN 623 Sector EW-W D1-24, LBN 623 Sector IR-W D1-38 and LBN 623 Sector LH-V C2-5). I don't know if any of the R2R databases are aware of these planets; none of them are particularly close to the nebula for spectacular screenshots but LBN 623 Sector EW-W D1-24 is closest.
