General / Off-Topic What are you reading currently?

Science book?

it's actually not a book in the strict sense. as happens with most 'sacred texts' it's a collection of old texts from different periods and different cultures mashed together. prophecies, legends, tales ... actually, there isn't even one bible but several, since different cults at different times found some pieces to support their particular beliefs better than others, and with presumably much being lost in translation.

these manipulations during the ages are a much more interesting 'study about human nature' than the tales themselves. plus it has the scientific and historiographic interest any other archaic cultural vestige has.

now that i'm here, i'm currently reading 'the genius of birds' (http://www.jenniferackermanauthor.com/genius-ofbirds/)

it's very interesting and it strikes me how little we actually knew about our feathery planetary companions until very little ago.

Upon the advice of you fine folks, I'm off to the shop for a coffee tomorrow, and to pick up The Hobbit.

My copy of "The Hobbit" came free with a computer game. Back in the old days books were the sort of freebee you could expect with your computer games.

back in the old days you had to "find" your literatur first, like the last months SA, in germany in the 60s, that always has been a REAL challenge:rolleyes:

The GAP cycle. Prolly the best 5 book space soap opera ever read made by Stephan R Donaldson.

I'd have to agree with that. I have read that series twice. Donaldson generally rocks...

Just finished reading this:

As epic poems go, it depends on which translation you read as to how the words, their sound and rhythm were translated from the original Middle Italian. I would like to read the original Italian version at some stage (but my Italian is very poor).

Think I am gonna start re-reading Joe Abercrombies 1st Law Trilogy, then slowly go throught the rest of the standalone books and by the time I have finished, hopefully the new trilogy will be out.

Never had the urge to read an autobiography. Not sure why.

I am always interested to know about people in areas of life (sport, culture etc.) that interest me. A case in point being my current read:

Yes; I'm a lifelong fan of motorsports. This books is a great insight into that particular era of Formula 1.

Guy Martin my autobiography atm.

Guy Martin is one crazy dude.

The Isle of Man TT.

I can't begin to imagine the danger of that race. The documentary Closer to the Edge gives some on bike footage of a lap. As someone who has ridden bikes just seeing that stuff scares the living whatever out of me...

For anyone interested in motorsport it's a brilliant read; a real page-turner. For anyone not interested in motorsport it's a brilliant read as it deals with success; how to be successful in life and how to capitalise on life's opportunities and do business in a correct and positive way. A great read.

I've read the First and Second Chronicles twice and, since The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant are out now, I'm going to reread the originals first and the move onto The Last Chronicles....
