Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

On those Prismatics, don't you have to support or align yourself with a big shot leader in the Empire for 4 weeks to be able to buy them? Are they any better than rolled grade 5 thermal resistant bi-weave shields with hicap special effect?
Yes, you have to do a little dance with Powerplay to get them. It's very simple, though, takes almost no time.

Prismatics are (more or less) the same as an A class shield of the same size, with a booster already built in. They are power hungry but extremely sturdy. They recharge very slowly. Very slowly. Did I mention that they recharge slowly?

I don't care about that because I really never lose shields when using them. If I did lose shields I would just leave and recharge at a station anyway, most likely. Or reboot and get 50% back right away. I've never had to do either one.

I just like having a huge shield. It's a bit of overkill but I can afford it :p

I have heard it took like 30mins to rebuild the shield from scratch on the big guys, so.... you have to think carefully on which ship to put on.

I think for trade/exploration, its good, you won't want to engage with the hostiles, this should hold long enough for you to run.

For combat ships, just make sure you know when to quit a fight, because once its down, it surely won't get backup again before the fight's end, either you flee'ed or dead.

PS. I don't have prismatics yet. 🤫

Could you take a look at mine and tell me if I'm doing something wrong?
Here's mine for your referrence.

The SLF I'm using is fixed MC condor. I love how it helps chew off the target's armor.

Particularly on my rails K2, MC SLF is a great distraction to the enemy when their shield was gone as MC become great threat to their armor.
When they chase the SLF, they show their fat broad side to my rails which I always have hard time getting when the target is shooting me! :devilish:

Had been trying different rails setup on FDL and Mamba, I still prefer FDL over Mamba due to its better agility. The only downside of FDL is the position of the C4 hardpoint, that make it really only suitable for fixed weapons.

So I come up with a strange setup: 1x C2 LR/TV beam, 1x C2 LR/oversize pulse, 3x C2 LR/Plasma Rails.

The result is not bad against an Elite Mamba below:

The placement of the rails on this setup formed a nice triangle of death at distance!

The Mamba on the other hand, the harpoint placement is great for gimbaled weapons, but the convergence sucks for fixed.
It was once again put back to storage... 🤷‍♀️

Coriolis says... ok, I give up. Coriolis says a lot of things, but the numbers (comparing size 8 prismatics and bi-weaves) just don't add up. Prismatics are ~40% stronger then bi-weaves, but they recharge much slower (as per Coriolis numbers, Prismatics have about 1/3 the recharge rate of bi-weaves... but this isn't reflected in the shield rebuild times shown...). And since I never got around to cozying with the Disney Princess, I'll stick to bi-weaves.

There's one trick, though - if you can afford to hang around for half a minute or so, completely helpless: repair&reboot. If you trigger the repair&reboot sequence, your shields (after completion) will reappear at 50% charge.

On my Mamba, I use
  • C4 for (fixed) Beam, PA or MC
  • C3s for gimballed beams (to cope with the small fry)
  • C1s for whatever - Cytos can be very nice for rapidly stripping shields of whatever i can get close enough to, gimballed MCs for dealing effects (corrosive and emissive) are also nice. Enforcers pack a punch, but only come in fixed.

Yeah, I know the reboot trick and do that alot even with bi-weaves.

Regarding the emissve effect, i guess I need to give it a try.... none of my gunz using that.

That is odd as the stats say that prismatics have a slightly lower rate of MJ/s than standard shields and more MJ total as they are stronger so they should be slower without engineering and assuming the same shield boosters (and possibly the same ship).

I don't know this from experience as I have never bothered with powerplay as I have no interest and my interest in the bribes for taking part in it hasn't been enough to overcome that.
I have no doubt that I may have got something the wrong way round.
I read a conversation in a thread saying Prismatics were better than normal sheilds at the time I was doing the Imp grind for the Cutter.

Well, if I understand correctly, in terms of raw HP of same class, Prismatics have higher HP than normal shields, but much slower rebuild/recharge rate. If properly engineered, a C7A prismatic could have comparable raw HP of a C8A standard shield.

Also, how well does the Guardian Shield booster work? I see in other builds that they can be stacked, do they really help or are my module and hull reinforcement packages a better use of space?
I've wondered the same thing. What I've read on multiple sources is that the Guardian Shields weren't worth it.

After reading the responses here, I'm thinking I need to go ahead and get them.

It depends. Guardian Shield reinforcements add a flat number of MJ to shield strength. I'd say engineered shield booster first for % increase then shield reinforcements. But if you start from weak shields a % increase doesn't help much so shield reinforcements better in this case. I don't do more than plug a resistances gap with hull reinforcements because when shields go down on medium and large ships your modules and weapons can get sniped and destroyed.

CMDR Quizengine, who apparently has lots of time, has put up a web site that has every type of Odyssey settlement, with pictures. It has icons that show where stuff is (like terminals, alarm consoles and stuff) and even has tips on where to find a scannable NPC to gain access.

It might come in handy. It's definitely worth a look.

Very nice! Bookmarked! Thanks! (y)

Came across this unfortunate fellow earlier. Made me wonder under what circumstances he died...

Might be worth a just-for-fun caption compo :D

Oh I kno him he just goes by plain Giuseppe now at his funeral.

I sent 25/25 pirates to their funerals and got promoted to a novice. The last one's name was: BOGUS. Excellent!

Ross 775 Posse faction pirates fear my name. But, they'll be looking for a default blue paint job cobra. I'm at the livery to celebrate.

Cheers! I can afford bourbon now! A 3 step program

There's a whole thread dedicated to funny and famous names somewhere...

One I found and posted was, iirc, "Brodacious Dudebrodean".
