Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Here goes then, everything I have:
Wow that's quite a nice collection of gear & things to wear! :]

This one's a bit like my original Maverick - first upgraded with backpack capacity (of course^), then some damage resistance (didn't have shield regen unlocked yet), then tool battery efficiency (hadn't got to battery cap+ yet) ...and, ultimately, as soon as i'd met the esteemed Oden Geiger - Night Vision!

And my stealthy one is here... for when i want to challenge myself to take a settlement really quietly, while leaving the alarms on - normally ends up back at that being-chased-by-guards screaming scenario... ;p

This is what happens when one has too much time on one's hands :D

...it does take some time doesn't it? Fortunately not too much was happening between the end of 3307 and when the Stargoids started appearing - had plenty of time to work on this, when not farting about with fonticula ;D

This is a perfect salad hunting machine indeed, i've made quite a couple of bio runs with Sidewinder. Don't forget it's a very small ship, i. e. you can install Enhanced Performance drives (sold by Felicity as well - 100+ m/s boost). And, you're going to need an additional fuel tank, or you're short on fuel too fast (say a couple of planets with 4+ signals, then you're dry after doing 2/3 of it just from your ongoing fuel consumption, no jumping). And, still a vehicle hangar. There're places where you can not land even a Sidewinder, SRV will save then. It's a bit tight for a real exploration, but for bio Sidewinder shines. Other thing that after going with it for a while you may get lost in a loop of i'm exploring in whatever ship - found a lot of bio in a sys - need to get a Sidewinder here.
I'm seriously considering rebuying the first ship I ever bought and engineering for best jump range and going out from the carrier for an Exobiology trip with no SRV to see how far I get. I know why I've not done this before - the DBX supercedes it in all but landing footprint.
Weird I know, but I want to fly a Hauler again....

I take one mission, grade 3 - kill 9 members of this family in this system.
Yeah, I dislike those also. There's too much faffing about searching for settlements that contain that faction, and like you said they are often abandoned.

If the mission doesn't state the settlement, I don't take the mission. Too much bother :)

I do like the ones where you have to wipe out an entire settlement though. I do them all stealthy like.

I've just got to improve on my mission selection. Start reading them ALL THE WAY THROUGH before I take them.

Just took a break in the FDL for some pirate massacres to vent my frustrations.

It's not worth it. That entire game mechanic is entirely useless in my opinion. I can't buy anything at all that I need, so who on earth would buy my useless materials that aren't used for anything?
Sorry, I meant the bartender in a station/ground port, not at a carrier...becasue they do take up space in your inventory...and you can get some cash for them (I used the list here: https://inara.cz/elite/components/#tab_items *)...I walked away with over 10 million, IIRC, from a quick chat with the bartender at Elcano Penitentiary in UGP 92.

I rarely fill my backpack these days so I just grab everything...

* Be aware that some unused items in the list actually have a page even though they are not used and some of those, IIRC, are used in unlocks...

I'm waiting to see if the rumoured reworking of a key game feature coming soon is going to include on foot engineering. I have to be a murder with no morals to get anywhere significant in materials collection which breaks role playing for me. That makes me play a game mechanic instead of trying to live a story in the ED galaxy. The one suit modification I really want us night vision, and is only done by an engineer at the end of a long chain of other engineer unlocks that make me do other things I'm not interested in enough to do them.
I gave up on personal equipment engineering once I discovered the mountains I'd have to climb just for a night vision feature on a suit that I already get on my SRV and ship.
I'm happy with ship game play and doing Exobiology in a grade 3 Artemis suit I found to buy.

Sidewinder is just a tiny bit faster in fact, in normal space. Not that it matters for bio, except of landing speed, as when you fly that fast nothing renders... Back when i was building it, i was choosing between Hauler and Sidewinder. Mainly i went with the latter as i was thinking to make it as specialized as possible (so smallest, etc). Not that i ever checked it it's rly easier to land, but on paper it should... Hauler will be indeed winning if it's about real exploration, a lot more jump range and bigger modules, more integrity and bigger shield.
A fun fact about Zorgon Peterson ships and exploration.

My current explorer is a Mamba (I build a new ship every time I go on a new expedition in the black) and when I built it I aimed at achieving about 45ly range and a decent speed.
What I have discovered is that its performance under those conditions is not so different* to that of the Hauler. The difference would be the (unused) hard points but, for anything else, it's basically a giant, glorified Hauler.

*it's obviously more resilient, better shields and runs a bit colder

I got lucky and found a G2 Arty w/NV...

Though I rarely use it...

I did those for quite a while, but absolutely NONE of the materials I found were of any use at all.

It's true, but it's kind of more complicated. Real necessary materials, such as MIs (missions rewards and crashed satellites) and Power Regulators (mostly mission rewards), are hardly obtainable with support missions. But.

Hab is the most common building. Hab data can the rarest also (e. g. Opinion Polls). Support missions will offer a lot of data port attempts.
Hab is also a very good source of Assets. Even if you're full on Assets, you'll need more, Graphene, Tungsten Carbide and alike are required in hundreds.
Health Monitors are also coming from Hab, and you will never be short on em.
Every settlement has Pow. Every Pow is a good chance on a Suit Schematic.
Then an occasional Cmd with good data... And Res, Argi or others do have a chance for good data too.

Yeah. And I've still got a metric ton of materials from it all that are never used.

It's true also that a lot of stuff is common (or worthlless). That's especially true about goods, which you may haul in hundreds just to find out that half an hour effort earned you the whole million. But you don't need to. If you're after data, checking their data ports will take a couple of mins instead, and then it's about being lucky or not this time.

You can use Inara Missing Components tool if you care to enter crafting lists for your equipment - it'll give the idea of what is required in which quantity. Gets a time to get used to, as too many different things, but then at some point you remember, that Atmospheric Data ain't needed anymore, while Weapon Test Data are required.

Had 9 of them killed and then got one shot.

I tell you, a sniper rifle that takes two shots to the head to kill at point blank range is nigh on useless.
1 shot to take down the shield, no body damage is taken until the shield is gone...there is no bleed through...it is/was a common complaint...especially right after Ody launched...I think the only exception to that is the intimidator...but I'm probably wrong as I've never used one...
