Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

One more word to Fleet Carriers, perhaps. While the DSSA carriers tend to stay put, that's not necessarily true for any other random carrier you encounter out there. You (should... doesn't always work) get a warning that the carrier is about to jump when the owner plans that jump - which can be as little as 15 minutes before lockdown. If you're on the carrier when it jumps, you jump with it - up to 500 ly per jump, every 20 minutes if it's in a hurry.
So, unless it's a DSSA carriers, staying docked when you log out is prone to surprise awakenings 😋

The bright side is, you can visit random new places without jumping sys by sys yourself. 😬
The darker side is that if you hop off the carrier to explore and miss the next jump you could find yourself stuck in a system beyond your ships jump range from anywhere else and need to call for rescue.

Fuel rats can help you too. They are a player group who goes around helping stranded people. Fuel rats here. https://fuelrats.com/i-need-fuel

if you do get stuck in space with little fuel always check the system map or galaxy map for fleet carriers around your area.and always fit the latest fuel scoop you can too the size of your largest ship bay.
I never use the largest scoop. The largest slot always gets the shield gen. I'm prone to collision...I mean I'm careless...

I am a reasonably patient person and can be quite careless but I base that decision on the refuel time in Coriolis prioritising scooping time over shields unless I am setting up the ship for a fight.

A short scooping time tends to lead to less overheating and damage picked up that way.

you can if you get to close to the star:D for that use heatsinks they don't last long .but it will help to get away from the heat source.
I use differing modes of scooping depending on what I'm doing.

For general travel I do a drive by and then stop to fill up every 6 jumps or so.

For the last few cargo CGs in either my T9 or T7, I've been hot jumping - as soon as the cooldown is done and the next system is in LOS, I charge the jump and when the heat gets to 100% I pop a sink and just about the time the jump countdown starts, the sink ejects...the T9 carries 6 sinks (2 w/ 2 reloads each) just for this purpose. Some of the runs I was making were 5 or 6 jumps from source to destination.

you overheat when you scoop?
I have always flown around stars Buckyball fashion, from before I had a fuel scoop* and long before I heard of the Buckyballers. So as I emerge from the jump at full throttle I can get quite close in sometimes before I have turned enough to generate the miss. How much heat trouble this leads to depends on the ship, flying my Dolphin which is virtually immune to heat can lead me to have issues with the net ship I fly due to bad habits.

*I remembered just how much trouble I used to have fuel scooping in the original game on the Spectrum so didn't want to try it at first, it turned out I was flying well within scooping range already which explained why I was always peering through smoke to pick out my exit marker.

Stares blankly out of canopy, smoke rising from burning legs.

And too fast will get you cooked too. I usually use about 10% thrust to start the scooping, once I get desired/max transfer rate, throttle back to idle.

Just to make it clear (since this is the newcomer's forum) - scooping rate is determined by the distance from the chromosphere - the consideration of your speed is that as you are travelling in a straight line then you can be effectively getting closer to the star ( as if you were following a chord in a circle or tangent outside one) - so travelling faster means getting closer quicker. This controlling your approach is why I scoop "sideways" when I am transiting so I can maintain a speed and just control the direction of travel so as to minimise the smoke and sparks. ;)

Yes, side scooping is the only right way... ;)

I also use side scooping, it's just easier to control my distance/vector while scooping. I prefer to fit the largest scoop I can because it speeds up the process. On a few ships I have small scoops for 'emergency' usage, and those do tend to overheat just because you have to sit near the star for such a long time.

Then again, I've removed the scoops from a lot of my ships because they no longer need them. I park my carrier near whatever I'm doing in that case.

F___! This T10 high waked.... (n) His SLF successfully distracted me... I treat SLF as highest threat so I focused fire on it once I noticed it. This sucker must have charge FSD since then, and high waked shortly after I put my gunz on him again.
