Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Out in the Sanguineous (so?) Rim slurping up some nice little codex entries for exobiology. However, nothing stellar or system body wise which means I've been here pre-Oddy.

I don't remember though :D

My eyes always roll with CR signs when I come across a metallic ring. The one I just probed had zero hotspots. Zero!

I ask you, what is the galaxy coming to?

I came over all-aquiver last night. Found a pristine ring which is just making me rich beyond rich. Park the carrier, deploy the Cutter, platinum starts chucking itself at me. It’s almost like a glitch in the universe.

If only tritium flowed as freely as platinum...

I don't own a carrier, but one of the commanders in the squadron has one that I consider our base of operations. As such, I like to contribute to her fuel requirements now and again. I also said a couple days ago here that I was hunting the Inara Miner's badge. So those two things dovetail nicely. I did subsurface mining for the tritium, with the abrasion blaster knocking off any surface deposits.

I would imagine most carrier commanders mine other, more valuable stuff, and then buy tritium? I see this bit I quoted Tyres and it made me wonder how you keep the boilers topped off on your carrier? It indeed does not flow freely, but I managed about 143t in a couple of hours using the Krait and the drill-bang rockets.

And that took me across the line for the badge, so a win-win. I get my cabbage and the squadron's carrier is close to topped off.

I'd guess that carrier commanders only really mine tritium when they are away from the bubble?

I buy mine from profits I make from platinum. I think other CMDRs also buy theirs given how long it takes to get a decent haul and how much of the stuff a carrier drinks.

In my opinion, it makes a carrier owner less self sufficient, making sure the tanks and hold are full and there's enough in reserve for a long journey.

I'd much prefer it if you could mine your way across the galaxy; it's just not viable though.

Yes certainly I mine other stuff and buy my tritium. There’s a decent station for it in our home space so it’s readily available. We have 20 carriers in the squadron so tend just to top them up as we pass them on return ‘empty’ haulage runs.

That’s a very kind post; thank you so much. ... Great, inspirational images you posted. Elite is a true tonic.

I've always liked this thread, it's one of the few places on the Forum which is mostly full of people enjoying the game and lifting each other up. Long may it continue!

Under 500ly left to Crab Nebula and Station X - still can't plot a route in the map yet, I suspect I'll have to get creative in the final stages!

Even the stars are trying to thwart me now - CME event as I'm scooping somewhere in the Cyoidai stellar region:

Fly safe CMDR's!

I bought a cheap 4gb GPU (used) off eBay recently so I could play Odyssey, just as a stopgap until the prices of the more high-end cards comes down enough. There's signs of this happening. Hoping that this Ethereum 2.0 actually happens sometime soon but this seems like the end of never, this would flood the market with knackered, old cards but the new ones would be cheaper too (but buyer beware)
I don't really like buying second hand components but I think I will actually have a look on eBay to see if they have anything. It is just to complete the Dell before I move on to something else after all. I don't need any long term guarantees and I can always switch back to the current GPU.

I wish there was a carrier service which we can install called 'Tritium Mining Team'.

Works only in certain systems with Tritium reserves.
Expensive to install.
You have to pay for expenses (high) when you set them to active mining mode.
Maybe random chance of extra costs from attacks the lower the security in system.

I expected so, but the way you wrote that made me think perhaps you were the rebel who mined his fuel.

I usually buy what I'm donating too, but since I needed numbers to hit the threshold why not combine the two.

Good hunting commander.
I did try once to mine my fuel on a trip to the black. It was... rather slow going. I seem to remember thinking at the time it would be more practical - and certainly quicker - to ditch the carrier aspect altogether. Go back to the "traditional" method of one exploration ship on a maverick mission into the unknown.
