Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Mystery of the disappearing scavengers again - got three, but where are the other six...?

...aha! found the rest of them 700m away from the settlement - apparently they'd lost their way? :D

At least in the dark it’s easier to find them - saw their flashlights in the distance from on top of one of the mining towers…

intense jealousy and here I am still trying to suck up to engineers.
"What do you mean that the next engineer is 63 jumps away?? And the item to suck up to them is ANOTHER 60 jumps??!!"

Seriously we need materials storage. I bought meta-alloys at Maia and the thought of having to haul them across all of known space is giving me space jitters. Yes, only need one for Farseer but there is still the hull reinforcement unlock and I only just discovered that I've to hang on to all those alloys in my cargo hold until I get the whole collection complete. Which is kind of insane since it means I'm forced to bring them into combat. sigh.

I had the same issue with anxiousness about hauling the meta alloys across to Felicity, but in the end, it wasn't that bad. Though, to be safe, I took the "solo" route to avoid gankers.
Yes, some unlocks need some serious planning ahead. Which can prove to be difficult if you are new and don't have an idea what goes where and how to obtain it. But as far as I can see, it isn't really neccessary to go into combat to obtain the other materials you need for the hull reinforcement - you also find them in those signal sources (degraded/encoded/high grade) scattered across systems. There's some more information about them in the Wiki.
Besides, materials have a dedicated storage that you take everywhere you fly or drive (I'm not sure about walking, as that wasn't implied when the museum was built...) and miraculously isn't lost in an explosion. But those meta alloys are commodities you can trade and thus require to be hauled in a cargo rack - and are indeed lost if you get blown up in combat.

How that? Deciat to Maia is 390 ly. An unegnineered long-range Hauler does 27 ly empty and 25 ly loaded with 2 MAs. That's 15 jumps out if you're in a hurry, and 16 jumps back.
Of course, you could also do the trip (one way) in 81 jumps - and make 75 MCr. from it scanning high value planets more or less along the route with the road to riches.

I think the GalMap may default to "economical" routing. If that's the case, switch it to "fastest" routing to save on quite a few jumps. If you're already at "fastest", get a better (A-rated) FSD - and, for those trips, possibly a long jumping ship (cheapest of these is the Hauler).

As for the storage: you do have materials storage. Those are the things like Iron (or Imperial Shielding, or Datamined Wake Exceptions) you can pick up, but can't buy or sell. What you don't have (at first) is commodities storage - things you can sell or buy (or steal, or jettison). You get that when you buy a fleet carrier.

Unable to play at the moment - or, at least, not properly. My mouse has taken a jolt from my Intimidator and gone to the great Sag A* in the sky. My backup mouse has lost its associated dongle.

You need to do something different here. It should not take so many jumps unless your ship has a tiny jump range (like 8LY or such).

Perhaps you have the galaxy map router set to "Economical" instead of "Fastest"?

If your ship really does have a tiny jump range, you can increase it by getting an A-rated FSD, and D-rating most other stuff. Or use a 'taxi' ship like a cheap Hauler set up for travel, then have your slow ship shipped to a nearby station.

Don't bother with the techbroker hull reinforcements that need meta alloys. It's better to engineer human hull reinforcements. You can buy meta alloys from fleet carriers in the bubble for just under 2 million each.
Something is wrong with your ship and outfitting to need this many jumps even to get to Maia. Or you are using economy mode route plotting when you need fastest route.

Your backup mouse is too sophisticated for the job.

You should get one that connects via wires and gets its power the same way that way you will still have some functionality while the all singing and dancing one recharges itself.

Is your backup keyboard also too fancy?

My kb+m are pretty basic Logitech wireless affairs that came bundled.

The keyboard has had a good life but the A on the a key has now rubbed off. It doesn't have any lights either so I use a small program called "Tray Status" that gives indication of numand or caps lock.

I think it actually might be time for some peripherals update. I do fancy an RGB keyboard but wireless ones are not that plentiful and quite expensive.

Not sure I want to go back to wires because of the aesthetic... snob? Moi? :,D

Boost-TFO + FA off had been very effective on the interceptor shutdown field.

Escaped 99% of cyclops encounters. I don't even carry shutdown field neutralizer anymore.
There is a key binding for shutdown field neutraliser now. So it is possible to hit the button fast enough for it to work. I do the boost FA trick on medium ships with only 4 utility points, though.

Trouble is, those LEDs inhale battery power. So IMO a wireless RGB keyboard is kind of contradictory - sure, you can run it wireless for the keyboard part, but you'll need to (hyperbole incoming) keep it hooked up to some power supply for the RGB (or otherwise LED) part.
My opinion now: as wirelss keyboards with good switches tend to be hard to come by - and especially for gaming, I'd imagine people would like to keep the input lag a small as possible, go for a good wired keyboard with decent switches. I don't game kb+m, but for other uses, the favourite from my arsenal is a Sharkoon PureWriter. TKL, good switches, good service. OFC, you can also (by now) get a keyboard that (on paper) looks basically identical (TKL, alu front plate, Kailh low profile switches) from Logitech - at three times the price...

Cherry mechanical (wired) keyboard here and MS Comfort Mouse (with box of two spare for when the rubber "tyre" on the scroll wheel disintegrates). Gave up on wireless mice years ago and really can't be having with LED keyboards (even disable it in my laptop) - besides, Cherry MX-Blue keys are my preference, not sure if any LED or wireless keyboards would use them.
