Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I want to try out Core Explody Mining too :)

I am about 30 jumps from Shinrata after this evenings travelling. It feels a little odd, heading back to the bubble after all this time, but there are things I want to do and obtain before I go back out. I have only scratched the surface of places I want to go in the black, and the call of the distant places is strong…

I took a couple of Neutron boosts to get to VY Canis Majoris, which is ABSOLUTELY -ING HUGE :) :D Even from 14kls away, it is larger than most stars are when you drop out of witch-space on arrival. Worth going to see, even if the system itself is devoid of any other objects save for a brown dwarf.

Core Explody Mining, my approach.

Equipment a Python setup roughly like this https://coriolis.io/outfit/python?c...==.Aw18eQ==..EweloBhBmSQUwIYHMA28QgIwVyKBQA==

Technique find a ring somewhere convenient, fire a mapping torpedo if there are no hotspots listed, arrive at a hotspot of your choice and head towards or away from the centre depending on how close you arrived.
Deploy hard points and select the fire group with the pulse wave on trigger 2 and prospector limpet on trigger 1, turn rotary control on throttle so trigger 2 is firing continuously (the ship now sounds like an old TV submarine such as Seaview), switch on low light mode, start looking for the rocks that change colour the colours vary apparently depending on graphic setup what I am looking for is a strong yellow that as I approach gets overlaid by a darker/reddish grid that gets blacker the nearer I get when close there will be areas of great edged black blocks now fire prospector.
If it is a core you are interested in switch fire groups to the one with the mining laser on trigger 2 (continuous fire) and the abrasion blaster and collector limpet on trigger 1, this let’s me hoover up the surface stuff.
When the surface is mined out switch fire groups and switch off continuous fire on trigger 2 which has the displacement missile trigger 1 has collector limpets and seismic charges wait till subsurface deposits are dealt with before targeting the fissures.
To actually crack the core line up above a targeted fissure and hold down trigger 1 till the indicator in the hud matches the strength of the fissure then release the trigger to launch, check the display on the right you need to add charges to different fissures until the display is in the blue region below that no explody above in the red you will be destroying mineable stuff, once the charges are set back off to about 2.25km and wait for the kaboom.
Switch back to the abrasion blaster and harvest.

So to do the Core Explody Mining (hereinafter known as CEM), would I be right in thinking I need the following bits and bobs…

Pulse Wave Scanner (utility mount)
Abrasion Blaster (needs a hard-point?)
Prospector Limpet Controller
Collector Limpet Controller
Sub-surface displacment missile launcher (in a hard point somewhere)
Seismic charge launcher (also in a hard-point somewhere)
Ye-olde mining laser of some description (obvously in a hard-point somewhere)

Is that it? It seems like a lot of stuff, but I have zero experience of this so far, as you can tell :)
Any preference for size and type of mining laser needed?

No. Just for mining the 'good stuff':

Pulse wave scanner.

Prospector limpet.

Collection limpet.

Abrasion blaster(s).

Seismic charge launcher.

Eyeball (MkII).

Patience.(Recommended).

If you are a genius at flying in cramped foggy places while cargo scooping you can also discard the collector limpet controller, I take the extras along because I can and I don’t like leaving stuff behind that I have seen.

Well, I’m back in the Bubble. It is very odd to see so much traffic, and navigation panel items have changed a bit since I was last here. It is all a bit strange. I berthed at Shinrata as my first port of call, and got a 6A fuel scoop for “Hecla” with some loose change, as well as giving the old girl a full service and a new coat of paint - she’ll be out scrubbing it all off again before long, so I thought it would be nice to see her all Bristol fashion for once!

Then I left Hecla to have a rest for a little, and bought a Krait Mk.II, which immediately got the iridescent paint job I bought for it months ago! I haven’t decided on a name for her as yet, so pictures to follow when she has been named and dressed up. After A and D rating the internals to my liking, I nipped over to jolly old Flissa and got the FSD tweaked up to G5 and the DSS to G3. Looks like Deciat is in a bit of a state at the moment, though I didn’t hang around to investigate too much!

Next, I’m going to get Daffodil from Sirius, and fly off to get some Thargoid sensor fragments from one of the crash sites so I can get Prof Palin to work some magic on my thrusters :)

And then... Its either some CEM fun with my Krait, or the Guardian FSD booster run with Hecla.

Depending on your shield strength and personal preference you can stick pretty close to the rocks as they blow up. For a while I backed off quite a way but once I discovered, by virtue of a lapse in my already very poor Health & Safety practices, that with all pips to my shields I could easily be 5-600 metres away during the explosion and only buffet around for a moment or two. Plus, any deployed limpets survived without issue and instantly went after any floating goodies.

I use a T10 and while I can get in amidst the chunks I find it easier to remain outside and just keep an eye on where the limpets are heading and use my thrusters to move around the outside providing a ‘path of least resistance’ to try and stop the limpets nosediving into the debris.

I’m mining for the CG near Sag A using purely mining lasers and no prospector (the CG requires Bauxite and it’s everywhere) so it feels ridiculously old school but quite liberating. It also feels weird as there are no pirates out here, I discovered this after sitting waiting for the so and so’s to turn up for an embarrassingly long time when I first dropped into a ring.

Oh, and if your shields are up to it, you may find it necessary to go and bump the odd chunk as sometimes the limpets seem to get a little bashful around the roid remnants until you knock the chunks away. Every so often one will disappear inside the model too.

Good luck

More PC issues. Off to the repair shop this time. /sigh

I was wondering though. How does one find interesting planets to pootle about on? All the ones I go resource hunting on are pretty featureless.

Also, and this is probably a timing issue on my part, but why, at planetary ports, is it always night?

Anyway, ground control to Major Tyres, signing off while his rig is in dry dock pending refit.

Not much experience on the resource hunting on planets yet...
Planetary ports, though, are sometimes in broad daylight, in my limited experience, not just on the dark side of planets. I'd guess that local brightness and the variability thereof also depends how far away you are from the star and how bright it is, as well as on whether the planet actually rotates at a rate different from its orbital velocity around the star (i.e. is not tidally locked).

PS good luck with the PC issues.

Come to Kumay, it's glorious!

And we even have bases that are sunlit occasionally (thanks to it's fairly rapid day/night cycle)

Oh engineers is a different matter - statistically, those guys definitely do not like sunlight.

I always found this interesting.
I haven't checked the day lengths on those planets (I'm lazy and I'm not THAT interested. :D) but yeah, the engineers' bases are almost always on the night side when I visit. I've been at Felicity's during the day, once or twice, but most of the engineer bases I've NEVER seen in sunlight.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that.

Er... Everytime I visit the shield guy, (big yellow planet, very nice) it's always daylight.

Ah, just had a look, it's tidally locked.[up]

Currently at HIP 36601, checking out the crystalline shards and restocking G5 goodies.

Yeah, tidally locked planets kind of don't count. :p

You certainly aren’t the only one to notice it, it was bothering me too!

I was interested to see you had landed at Farseer Inc in the daylight, as I have never been there other than in darkness, and was thinking it was just tidal locked.

I haven’t been to Mr. Qwent except in darkness either.

Elvira though, I have never been to except in broad daylight.

I have been doing some playing around with Coriolis to come up with a CEM Krait build... If any of you fine folk who know lots more than I do about power and such like would care to cast an eye over my attempt and let me know of any changes I should think about, I would be very grateful :) https://coriolis.io/outfit/krait_mkii?code=A0pktkFflidxssf5---3M3R2x---050537B21vP9C02i.Iw18WQ%3D%3D.CwBjIRgJnEGYGyheig%3D%3D.H4sIAAAAAAAAA2P8Z8%2FAwPCXGUj8qQcSHHdYGRj4VX79%2Fy%2BmwcXA8J%2FpnxhInhUkX8IAlRJ5AyREF%2FAzMEhsYGFgUC4QB6pk%2FicFV1kBUym0g5uBQaRGFKgSZPB%2F1n8WcOsagAQnyBIuiT%2F%2F%2F%2FNfYGdgUARxlUBcVRBLDcT6L%2FLPB66nEGHwJ6BMwT%2BgO1qAMhIeX4AqJf7FwlQKgdxkCrL9%2F38GMAAA55WqZOoAAAA%3D.IwOgrA9AzBqQDNATBAbAFggUwIYHMAbLCWeMiRSoA%3D%3D%3D

I was especially pondering the shields... I started off with 6C biweaves, and then greed got the better of me and I put in the 5C biweave to make room for a larger cargo rack... Is that a good idea? (I only play in Solo, for reference!)

You only have 253MJ shield. My rule of thumb is to never go below 400MJ. 400MJ mean that you will be able to run away from anything (i.e. no NPC has enough firepower to melt through 400MJ before your FSD is charged)
If your powerplant really is as ridiculously overpowered as it is on the coriolis build, buy some A-rated shield boosters and engineer the crap out of them and you'll be invincible. :)

Also, I'd swap the fuel scoop and collector limpet controller. If you're mining, even if you're mining outside the bubble borders, you don't need a fuel scoop so big. More active limpets, though, are really handy and can speed up the process considerably.

The shields are fine the optimal capacity figure is larger than the hull figure for your ship so they are good enough.
Your power plant is oversized for your needs so you could consider a smaller one, you have 10MW in hand but it does make it easy to keep the essentials in the always powered range.
Your Power Distributor is not the usual engineering and things might be slow to charge when you do drain it, typically people go with Charge Enhanced to speed up recharge and Cluster Capacitors to improve the total charge not that it should make a lot of difference to that build.

But overall that should be fine for CEM work.
