Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Well, after debating with myself for some time, I've decided to stay in Colonia for the foreseeable future. Maybe when new content drops next year I might want to return to the bubble, but for now everything I want is out here.

What finally decided me was mining, as one of you guys suggested a few pages back. I'm getting much better at it, and bringing in a fair bit of credits. I did some mental calculations and decided that if I dedicate the same time to mining as I would to traveling I would indeed make enough to ship my Corvette out here.

I mean, I could suicide-winder back to the bubble, strip the Corvette to get maybe 36LY out of it, and then fly it out to Colonia and ship just the modules I had to remove (like weapons). That would cost less credits, but more of my personal time.

And mining is more entertaining to me at the moment than long-range traveling.

So I'll ship my Corvette out here (just over 500 million) and mine while it travels here. And a bit more until I have made the money back, anyway.

Then I'll have my 2 favorite ships out here. I spent a lot of time on the Corvette between getting Prismatics and doing all the Engineering...I want to enjoy it!

Nothing much is going on in the bubble right now, anyway. And the constant eye-candy around Colonia is compelling.

Here's a shot of the smoke and debris from my latest mining effort (can you even spot my ship and fighter in there??). It was my best haul, ever, 77 million.

I guess I have a new home. :)

I wonder how many of those have left the game after being bored doing dozens of jumps instead of a few tens? I think your advice is flawed.

e.g. 45 instead of 14 from Teppanik to Maia with 23ly jump (I don't have a ship with lower ;) )
Well, as was said above, there is a choice. At the beginning of the game you need money. I recommend easy method to get them just by the way and in the same time gain engineer reputation after selling the data to Farseer base. As well as Exploration rank.
For sure, for those who want to get all the things ASAP this is no go.
But this is the way how this game may be played, one of the many. And I think it's a kinda natural :)
And I agree with Daniel Klimchuk. Sure, there is a possibility that economical route setting was accidental and unwanted. I stand corrected.

Funny thing. I've never used the night vision on a planet but I find it invaluable whilst mining. :)

By the way, did you know it's persistent? you can visit "your" cloud of dust days later and continue where you left off. :)

I use it when I get to a brown dwarf and don't have enough fuel for the next jump. I select the economical route and still have enough fuel for a few jumps, and possibly an encounter with a scoopable star.

In such situation filtering out un-scoopable stars can be a great help. In general, I recommend to set star class filters to KGBFOAM, if you are just travelling. This will minimize the risk of calling fuel rats :)
Sure, if you need the rest of the star classes on your route you do not need to do this. For Codex, for example, or if you exploring and want to scan'em all. :)

I use economical routes when I need high grade materials. I set map filters to include systems in appropriate state, plot economical route to my destination (engineer or material trader) and FSS every system en route, collecting HGEs if there are any. Usually I'll have all I need at the finish.

I did get around the Witch Head yesterday, taking it in from three different vantages and finding some gorgeous ringed worlds. Then I set out on the trek to the Orion Nebula. I chose the economical route on the way just to see what happens. If it gets boring I'll switch to fastest, but at something like five jumps in it's been worth it.

70 jumps sounds like a C-rated Sidey with guns or a freshly bought E-rated Hauler. :)
...or somebody forgot to tell Banger that he can switch from economical to fastest routing.
lol , yeah I went the long way round for 2.4 million cr explorer and too see a nice black hole, I didn't see :p

And what modules do you have? 70 jumps seems quite a lot. However, take your time and don't try to rush it. You'll make it and you'll be glad you did when you see how much extra range you get on an engineered FSD!

Being able to scoop fuel is also a boon on long journey's as you don't to be so concerned about finding stations for refuel when plotting your route.

Ship : Asp explorer. (32t cargo left)
Fsd 5e now with blueprint (grade 1) (not seen much of a difference for such a long journey.
Fuel tank is around 68t atm no scoop (don;t think they are worth the little they scoop up).
most updated to 3c-4c classes on most modules.
after all it did start out has a miner craft, just exchanged some cargo space for fuel tanks..
Still got miner weapons on . and refinery lol

Just arrived in Robigo, time to reboot the criminal vacation business!

'Robigo Runner', lightweight Python, cabins and heatsinks.

Its got long legs, it's fast. (y)
It's just not the same without the black paintjob.:(

Much shaking of heads and extreme tutting going on here. :giggle:
Pound for pound,Fuel soop is the best 359 cr i spent in-game.But each to his own,of course, and good luck on your venture.

I am sorry but you really need to get a better FSD and replace any other E rated core modules, the only thing in their favour is they are cheap which is only useful when selling the ship.

An unengineered 5D FSD would be better than the one described.

If you are an explorer, I'd install a 5A FSD as soon as possible. Upgrading all modules to D also gives a small boost to the jump range.

If you decide to keep your Asp, you can then engineer the FSD, which can increase the jump range by up to 50% and then unlock the Guardian FSD Booster which will add a further 10.5Ly. (y)

As other commanders have said, you'll see vast improvements if you change your loadout.

If it were me and I had the CR, the first thing I would do is get an A rated FSD. 5A or 6A on the AspX - can't remember the largest size now.

Secondly, fuel scoop. Biggest A rated money permitting. B if a bit cash strapped. When you git gud at scooping, you can scoop REALLY fast. I can fill a tank whilst lining up for the next jump. And I'd swap the fuel tank for the default one on that ship.

But...

This is just my opinion and from the wonderful position of hindsight and experience :D

Whatever you decide, it's your journey. Enjoy it, however you want.

ETA - Today, I am mostly grinding Imperial rank until such time as I get bored and need to do something else. So far: Viscount. Miles to go yet...

Been exploring other pursuits lately (mainly iRacing) but you guys are giving me the exploration itch again, so last night started gearing up the Phantom for another trek. Hopefully will cast off and raise sail tonight or tomorrow for 'south west' and see what's out there thataway.

What's the story again, if you go to Colonia but want to get back to Jameson a la the term I think...'Sidey-cide'? How would that work if your last station stop was Jacques?

okay, first of, it's kind of an exploit. Not entirely, more like.. ummm… unfair play.
But if you want to do it here's how it works:

You buy a sidewinder in Colonia (or another ship that you can lose entirely).
Suicide.
Don't rebuy and instead choose free Sidewinder.
Boom. You're back when you first started when you started the game.

...now you just have to wait four days and pay 50 million to get your Phantom back from Colonia.

Not really worth it, imo. Especially now when the trip from Colonia along the neutron highway is like what? Two hours? If you're clumsy?

I resent that . I'm clumsy and it takes me way longer than that.
It's probably quicker and cheaper to new build there, all though i've never tried.

Thanks Chris! Nice to know the options. I admit I'm a little chicken to try neutron supercharging...

Dan, it really isn’t that scary doing a neutron supercharge - just make sure you slide into the cone so that your nose is pointing away from the star, up the jet cone. You’ll shake, rattle and roll a bit, but as long as you keep some speed up you’ll be charged in seconds. You won’t be in danger of being thrown out into the star’s exclusion zone, and the worst that will happen is that you get bounced out without the supercharge having happened... in which case, just try again :)

It is very satisfying to pull it off, and even more so to see the jump range after the supercharge! 😮 :)

(Do not try it with a White Dwarf... too large an exclusion zone for comfort, and a worse charge to boot!)
