Go ahead a buy a VR, man. You're a long term player, you'll get your mileage out of it.
You don't have to spend thousands of bucks on it either. Buy a decent Windows Mixed Reality helmet. If you have a half-decent card (something like GTX1070 is enough for medium details with some tweaking or anything from the current gen) you'll be fine.
My Dell Visor helmet had cost me some 200 quid on eBay and I love it.

Railguns are the best weapon in the game, imo. Most fun for sure.
Their only downside is very limited ammo. That's why you see the plasma slugs on my build - the most awesome engineering bit, I'd say - the railguns use your fuel instead of ammo. :)

Holy moly! I'm losing my mind! I just saw a video, from FDEV, that shows "Elite Dangerous Odyssey". It has space legs, atmo landings, etc. It's really happening!

The vid was taken down already, but it was on the official site. Someone captured it, of course, so it's still viewable (for now). I think it was posted in error, but the cat is out of the bag!

Have a GTX980ti - not sure how that would handle VR :unsure: I could slap in a GT2080ti if the divorce proceedings went OK. Or perhaps wait until the GTX3080ti comes out and there'sa decent O/C on an i9 10900k.

Well, that was impressive.

If it's actually what we're getting, then I might reconsider my current total lack of interest in "Space Legs", given that there is planetary landings as well by the looks of it.

Of course, it could also be a complete hoax :)

I've played Elite VR on GTX 970 a couple years ago. Without Horizons, though. But it ran fine. Naturally you can't expect the highest details on stations and whatnot, but the experience is still amazing. :)
Nowadays, if you want to upgrade, an RTX2060 is plenty enough for everything. Or the RX5700.

Whatever that mention of a divorce means, I hope you're okay.
