Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

NOOO, that's a common mistake - you connect them to the subatomic discombobulator!

Correct. And then you need to tweak and weakle 'em as the reverse flux continuator needs to be triballised. Then, and only then, can you instigate the feedback loop required for wibble wobble knackers and Arnold Sideways' theorem of "pinkle squirmy plap plap plap".

On my way back down from the roof, i've finally found a use for a carrier. It certainly is dark up there, but there's enough stuff to keep me going for a while. Now i just have to decide whether it is worth the effort. ( I mean, obviously it is, because it's there but it's a lot of faff for a few outliers and an horrendously expensive step ladder. :giggle: )

I was actually surprised at how lenient the grind was. 13 round-trips Mainani-Ngalinn was sufficient to go from low-% Duke to King while just taking courier missions and just a couple of donation missions at the very end. I expected more as I have done much worse grinds in Elite.
I got to Duke, got my Cutter and flipped the Empire off as i took the thing into the Black.
Ten seconds later I smashed straight into a moon.
LOVELY ship. Looks like a fish, moves like a fish, steers like a COW.

I'm a Duke, too, with a similar experience as I headed off to Colonia before the paint was wet on my new Cutter. My Corvette has just arrived in Colonia (woo hoo!) so I flew it for the first time last night. Delighted to discover on hitting outfitting that I had made massive progress with the modules before shipping it (had forgotten that I was organised enough to do that, thought it was a bare hull - perhaps an insight into the modern game economy, post-mining; I had forgotten several hundred million credits' worth of modules, including 8A pp and a good range of engineered weapons!). Anyway, to the point: on her maiden flight last night (a short-albeit-lucrative (5.6m cr for 180T!) hop between two stations at Colonia before the ever-lovely Mrs Templar arrived to tell me that we had to finish our latest French murder mystery), I could trial the handling. It might be boat-like compared with smaller ships (no idea), but with engineered 7A thrusters and hopping straight out of a Cutter it handles like a go kart! Incredible. It feels like a small ship with big teeth. Context is king, so I can recommend switching from a sluggish ship to a new ship to give first impressions a boost.

Lanced a few roids from distance with the stuff from zemina. At last a generally useful tool, slow road to billions in a 90T krait MK2.
I only bought 6 so, will try to get up to cutter level bulk mining. I hear the mining markets are quite volatile now....might be best in 200mcr/session smaller ship.

A quick, noob question? I am currently at Imperial Duke level. I don't want to be a King.
Can I lock at these rank levels? recent actions for Zemina raised my duke level from 30% to 45%.
Perhaps just defect to the alliance forever..?

Just don't accept any more imp ascension missions. I have never taken an account beyond Duke - as a card-carrying socialist I don't even like any of the imp ranks but locks need picking. ;)

In addition to @Para Handy ’s excellent advice avoiding mission rewards with high reputation gains will slow the progress along the rank bar.

Sadly not. Personally I think that some of the labels for some of the ranks are a bit daft (I'm already a Duke without a Dukedom, and a Rear Admiral without having joined a Navy, no interest whatsoever in being a King without a Kingom or an admiral without a fleet!) so having gone as far as I need to for a Corvette and a Clipper I have stopped. But accidentally doing things on their behalf would increase my rank - I think I'm 45% towards King. I'd love to delete the ranks, as really it isn't a rank as such - it's almost like having a loyalty card rather than a rank. We help them enough, they grant us benefits, be that a ship or system access or whatever (I'd have preferred some tech or more ships to a rank).

Realistically if you are grinding both Fed and Imp rank - how high to people go? Just to unlock ships/systems or the whole hog for both?

I got the ranks I needed for the top locked ships, bought those ships and then headed off to my new home in Colonia. One advantage of Colonia life - no Empire or Federation factions, so no rank progression!!

Went to Robigo to haul passengers for a while. I set up a small base at Hauser and had the Vulture shipped out there to see if I could hunt some gankers, but no. Also had them mail me the AspX because I wanted it for shutteling back to Jameson. Btw. that technique where you overrule the SCA while approaching your destination hammer down, and then lock it to the target at much too high speed might not be significantly faster but it feels as if it's much faster and gets the adrenaline flowing. Bam! No damage and only a few mumbling sounds from the passenger cabins.

Interessting to note how quickly i changed from not wanting criminals on board into human trafficking, once the legal missions dried up :)

Then I decided to leave the Vulture and Gagarin the Python bus out at Robigo, and go back to Jameson for a while, to spend some of the mats I've gathered, and maybe take the sightseeing Mamba for a spin. On my way I passed a system with a white dwarf and a CNB with a small station 611 ls away, pretty close to Jameson. Can't remember the name, HIP something IIRC. Great diabolic atmosphere to end the day by hunting those who don't know right from wrong in a matte black FDL with a crapload of turbo charged frag cannons! 🤘

Yes.

People vary some will just do the minimum to get the permits and ships they want others will want to go as high as possible.

Personally I unlocked Rear Admiral to get the Corvette and Squire to get Achenar access I have no plans to increase either rank as I don’t think what there is to gain is worth the hassle for me.

Currently I am hanging around a Haz RES in said Corvette acquiring manufactured materials, trying out different weapons and slowly ranking up my SLF pilot.

When I was purposefully going for rank I only did as much as required to unlock the ships. Rank grinding back then took much longer than it does now, so I had no desire to prolong it.

However, in the years since then I've wound up both Admiral and King just from doing whatever took my fancy at the time.

On one of my alts recently I did some Empire rank work, because I wanted a Clipper. I was amazed at how quickly it went. Times have improved muchly in that regard.
