You can craft heatsinks (and pretty much every other type of "ammo" and also many other useful things) on board. It's called Synthesis and it is accessible via the right-hand panel.

Well, at least if you are scavenging raw (from mining and in SRV) and manufactured (from dead ships etc.) materials on your way.
....

You can synthesize ammo for it, if you have the mats, I believe.

I found it infuriating that they included a manufactured material as a synthesis requirement for heatsink ammo. Their response to complaints - " explorers are not meant to be self-sufficient " - was frankly insulting.

Here I am, watching the planet (and the many carriers) fly past me as I collect my reward. It's quite odd to see them all whooshing past like that. You can't see the carriers in the screenshot though, but I could see their nav targets flashing by me like bad memories :p

I ended up Wanted because I flew over one of the crashed ships that apparently had a security perimeter. But my alt is happy with her extra 10 million.

Finally accepting that I stranded myself in Colonia about a year ago, I decided to make use of being here by getting some rep with the local engineer. The other one. That isn't a slave trader.

This led to needing osmium. Fair enough, my Phantom is a decently sized ship, and it wasn't too hard to refit it for a little laser mining. Except that for some reason, Jaques cannot store power plants. It just can't. Nothing you do can make Jaques store that specific item for you. And I wasn't going to give up my engineered lightweight explorer PP, so that's now stored at the station next door.

It seemed like a good idea to find a mining contract or two, which I did... and rapidly regretted it. Not only did I now need 34t of osmium instead of 10, but the contract paid 2 mil, where the market sale price was 150k per ton. The contract was paying half that. Ouch.

Still, as luck would have it, I found a painite hotspot, and spent about an hour bouncing off rocks and reducing my hull to 50% before finally returning with my haul. Overall, seem to have broken even on the refit, and I'm pondering whether it's worth buying myself a Python to do some hardcore mining out here... 55m to buy, or 120m to ship mine from the bubble feels like it might not be silly to have a second!

Edit: also! Saw some fellow commanders in Mobius PvE. I guess Jaques is the place to be :)

'Due to your hostile actions we regret that we have had to rescind our offer'.
Dude, you offered me 800k.
Your enemies offered me 26 million to inhume a few of your chaps.

This is what I love of the new NPC missions that you get at settlements: the reward is miserable, so I negotiate, then they refuse, telling that I ask to much, so I don't accept the mission. At that point the NPC retorts that they don't understand how I can turn down such an offer, and BLAM goes my Tormentor.
