So, the questions:
  • How can you tell how much Tritium a trip is going to take?
  • Are the upkeep costs taken out weekly or monthly?
  • Should I run "anybody can dock" even when I'm not selling anything or should I restrict it?
  • In general best practices advice VERY welcome.
  • Weekly
  • That's up to you - I block notorious though
  • Lots of stuff for best practice but I would say - tritium, tritium, tritium. Load up, load up, load up.

Weekly - you get an email in your inbox

Your choice. Very few are going to complain if you leave it open for docking, very few are going to complain if you don't.
In general best practices advice VERY welcome.
Calculate your weekly upkeep, then load up the carrier's account with a few years' worth. Keep in mind that the upkeep cost are taken from the carrier account, NOT your CMDR's running account.

Fleet Carrier Router

I use this ap, it is very accurate and let you know the quantity of fuel needed and used, but also systems where you can find planets and rings to mine (Pristine).

Players refueling and servicing on your carrier contribute to your weekly upkeep.

Not making any noises while running through settlements, even when you behave and dont carry anything illegal, can still save you from drawing guards attention towards you and getting scanned thus slowing you down.
Perhaps it's a matter of playing style. I have never had any problem remaining undetected, with or without crouching, when I want to be. But I also don't generally run through settlements :p
I find walking around crouched to be annoying.

That said, that would be a mod I'd get because the vast majority of the time, I'm walking. Being as silent as crouched while walking would be awesome.
You make a good point. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have it. But in my experience the times I have to actually crouch and sneak are few and far between. It doesn't seem worth the hassle of getting the mod, for me.

Congrats!

1) If you're going somewhere in particular (like Colonia), you can plot a route in Spansh and it will tell you the tritium cost, based on your ship's weight. If you're not, you can generalize it by making a few jumps and seeing how much they take. My ballpark figure for going to Colonia is 4000 tons of Tritium each way.

2) Weekly, you'll get a notice in your inbox.

Note that if you keep your services suspended except when you use them, you'll cut your upkeep for them in half. I only turn them on for a few minutes when I need them. Then I shut them off again. My crew spends most of their time sleeping, I think.

3) Personal preference. I have mine locked down, mostly because my services are all suspended anyway. There's not much point in anyone landing unless we've spoken beforehand.

4) There's not much to say about best practices. It's mostly just personal preference. I like to park near the main star, because it makes returning to the carrier faster than if I'm out by some planet. I park near a planet if I'm going to be making a lot of trips to mine or get tritium from (or sell my mined ore to) a nearby station. In that case the closer to the selling station the better.

If you're flush with cash, I'd say keep a non flying T9 (or Cutter, if you prefer) with maxed out cargo slots on the FC just to transfer tritium. No need for fancy modules or anything, it's just there as a mule.
That's what I do, at least

BTW, congratulations 👏
He just paid probably ~6 BCr. for the carrier, so cash shouldn't the issue. But yes - good idea. Also, even if you make it 100% cargo - put in the ADC and SCA. After the tenth trip between the station and your carrier, you'll fall asleep on the stick.
One addition: also add a Python for the same purpose with a similar loadout. Lots of stations that sell cheap (relatively...) ³H only have medium pads.

OK, so I came back full of Tritium and donated as much as I could and filled the tank up to 1000.

But now I'm sitting here with a couple hundred Tritium left on my T9. How do I get that into the storage hold on the carrier to use later?

Transfer from your Inventory on your right panel, in your ship.

Same to get it out again. You have to put it back in your ship to donate to the Tritium module.

I use an Imperial Cutter for transport, only 740 Cargo capacity but it is very well shielded and armed, I don't try to escape interdictions, I kill the interdictor and take the bounty.

But again, I only play solo...
You'd lose a bit more cargo space with a size 6 shield generator. But with that, a couple of Guardian Shield Reinforcements and a full set of engineered shield boosters, the Cutter is pretty much ungankable in Open, too. It's not mass-lockable (except by another Cutter), so the old submit, boost and back to SC works pretty well.
