What did you do in Planet Zoo today?

Hey guys, I've started a new zoo, inspired by the architectural style of the volcanic island of Lanzarote. My idea is to create a zoo built into the center of a picturesque village. I haven't thought which animals to include yet but... step by step. At the moment, this is the entrance 🦭

Wow, beautiful statue work (is it a representation of the solar system?). And a very intricate build overall.

I have been working on a new sandbox zoo :)

Okay, sharing time!

The first thing is the "Giants of Aldabra" House, which is actually oversized, so I'll probably shrink the outdoor habitat down a bit (I forgot how un-giant the giant tortoises are in the game). There's a small indoor viewing area and a broader outdoor viewing area.

Of course the tortoises don't actually get any enrichment out of the mud wallow (Frontier, why?) but almost every giant tortoise habitat I've seen in real life has a pool or wallow.

Next is an overview of the zoo if you turn left when you enter. "Hoofstock Row" is at the back (left to right; zebras, sable antelope, pronghorn), and the habitats in the bottom are the "Cold Cats" habitats (Siberian tigers and snow leopards, two habitats each to separate sexes). The building still needs a roof but I'm working out how I want to level it.

Here are some views of the tiger habitats. First the female habitat:

Then the male habitat, which is a bit smaller. The logs at the back probably aren't useable but Auckland Zoo did something like that for their Sumatran tiger many years ago, and I want the whole zoo to have a sort of "make-do" vibe.

Then the female snow leopard habitat. She actually uses all the climbing stuff in there which is pretty cool.

Finally some wide shots of the sable antelope and pronghorn habitats:

The sable antelope seem to be particularly popular for some reason.

Ultimately a lot of the empty spaces will be filled in with foliage and rockwork and such, mostly temperate and taiga, and the back road of the zoo will be hidden by foliage as well. You can see behind each herbivore habitat there is a separation pen, too (with implied access from the barns). The uniformity between those habitats is also deliberate, as in the lore it's a case of using what space was available.

The big cat habitats likewise are very deliberately basic, utilising angular chain-link fencing for the most part and basic concrete buildings, and especially bamboo as a means of screening viewing areas (bamboo is cheap and easy to grow but requires a lot of maintenance in return).

I'm having a bit of a major problem, though; despite being aligned in exactly the same way as the other hoofstock habitats, the final one I'm trying to build isn't working out as easily. For some reason the path, despite being completely straight with angle-snap turned on, is crossing into the habitat over the fencing. I'm really at a loss as to why. Mathematically it doesn't make any sense.

It could be fine, though; going by the same philosophy of 'using what space you have' I might nix the original plan there and make it into something different. Orana Park, my local zoo, kept wallabies in a corner like that so maybe I'll throw in some kangaroos.

Edit: I also wanted to add that I've been experimenting with custom fencing more in this zoo, too, so next time I share I'll include a closeup of one. You can sort of see it on the right hand side of the sable antelope habitat.

Guys, I added the Otters and the Cranes to Murmeldorf and did a stroll in guest mode and OMG, I fell newly in love with that project. The sounds... the feel of going through a real zoo! I could almost smell it and it was super motivating. I might concentrate on Murmeldotf entirely to get it finished before the next DLC now.

also, the Capy cam inspired me to add them to Murmeldorf as well, as they definately fit the vibe, looking at the Shepreth wildlife park.

Already added otters and capybaras! Otters have stolen my heart, but I can’t say I’m excited by the capybaras — I guess it’s just not that unique to me, and I’ve never seen them in real life. Don’t get me wrong, they’re cute and I’m glad we have them, they just don’t strike me as anything special.

That looks amazing! This must be one of the most unique styles I have seen in this game.
Did you build palm-statues?! Or what is that on the left? And in the first picture, is that something like a donation-wall?
Love it! Please keep us updated on your progress!
Thank you so much! I have been working on so many recreation inspired builds that I wanted to finally try something new and just let myself enjoy the game 🥰 I am going to try to still make this a more realistic project but not focus so much on a budget; I just want to make a beautiful and fun zoo.

I am glad you spotted the palms! I wanted to throw in some fun and "tacky" decor so I made some fake palms (workshop link: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2792685836). The wall is exactly that! My idea is it is one of the gardens you see in zoos that people can either buy a plaque in someone's name or just make a donation to be on the wall :) The wall is a newer addition to the zoo so the architecture is a little more modern than the rest of the entrance area.

I am excited to share what I do next in this project!

Look who's now living with the llamas in Biopark! :)

I just decided to turn the entrance llama habitat into a mixed South American species habitat with anteaters and tapirs as well as the llamas and capybaras. I'm going to enlarge it a bit and add a proper house to it, right there's just an open shelter which is fine for the llamas but not for the other three species (at least not in Central Europe where my zoo is located)

Whispering Sands zoo is the first of my franchise zoos to get the Capybara and Asian Small Clawed Otters (2 capybara and 4 otters). I cannot get over how absolutely cute the otters are. And the Capybara too of course, but surprisingly spending more time watching the otters right now. One franchise down for these two, 6 more of each to go 5 of them will include both species and then one various one for each of the species. I"ll work on one of those each day until I'm done since they're definitely my priorities of the pack, then circle around to the Platypi, which I have a few pairs of already. Thankfully none of these species require a lot of space so I should be fine with my other prebuilt Capybara areas.

I have a feeling it will be a long while before I even work on any of the other 4 habitat animals though they look quite nice from what I see. I'm just so happy for this pack, even if I really only am taken in with half of the animals.

mentioned above that i moved newt, otter, and capybara into prebuilt enclosures, but i have now also added the lechwe, and constructed the crane and buffalo... can't believe i'm also "done" with my wetlands upgrade!

I didn't get much time tonight, but I split my tortoise house into two, one side for the Galapagos, and one side for the Aldabra.

I'm thinking I might have to completely redo my otter enclosure though 😭. When I built it I used a 2m wall piece to measure the water depth, hoping the otters would be able to dive, but for some reason it now seems to be less than 2m. Sinking in the bottom makes it look wonky because of the barrier hit box. It's a tough call.

I also started and scrapped a restaurant that will include a view of the cranes, but I just can't make it look good tonight so I'll try again tomorrow.

Well, I started a new zoo in sandbox and happily switched off research. Big regrets! We should have specified we want a distinction between vet and mechanic research :ROFLMAO:
Totally get that. :ROFLMAO: I also kinda wish vet research wasn't linked to enrichment items, but that's really nit picking.

I plan to just mindlessly do all the building research without animals in sandbox zoo, then start building. And if I feel like it, I can turn on money and CC then to have a somewhat realistic game play. (I don't see researching shops and building items as realistic, that's why I would like to skip that part and don't spend money on it)
