what do PvP players get out of attacking other....

i was going to an engineer trying to dock. and this guy who was waiting near the dock starts firing at me inside the no fire zone. seriously no firezone where anti ship defense systems are able to attack him. after few seconds he fled by jumping obviously because he was getting lasered by authorities.

what was this guy trying to achieve?
i was clean and had no cargo. even if he did kill me he'd get nothing but bounty

perhaps just a inexperienced griefer?

Testing his aim, weapons, shields vs ground station... who cares. So...

1. Pin important blueprints and do as much as possible remotely (use Elvira rather than Felicity).
2. If there is another Cmdr at/near an engineer base, scan them ASAP and evaluate their ship/loadout/combat rank.
3. If they're flying a clichéd ganker type ship, with ganker style loadout, then:
a. Leave, maybe log into Solo?
b. Come in hot, all pips to sys/eng, deploy Chaff, use buildings for cover, land quickly.
4. Always fly in Open - danger is just another challenge.

Clean and no cargo? You said it - "griefer". Block him. /Thread :)

Had the same thing bringing some weps to engineer at decait.. I actually forgot I was in open so didn't expect trouble.
And trouble my unarmed dbx got....
I managed to wake out but mass locking me he was with his conda.
Fortunately id put prismatics in the old beast and boosters so popped a sink chaffed and high waked...close though.. real close.
I had no load except a few powered down weps to put experimentals on. Grr.
So yeah your always gonner get those who do not recognise basic politeness and etiquette.
My question was assuming he scanned me which he did..would he have seen the weps I was carrying wernt actually powered up?

He would not have known, but Conda vs DBX was probably a good gamble on his part.

Ah then he was within his code of ethics I suppose. Would be nice to transport weps as cargo or if down powered have it shown clearly ie a notice during his scan of me that my weps wernt enabled.

maybe try it for yourself and report to us, how it feels?

i imagine something like: waiting somewhere for prey. then some prey, finally a hollow square. checking, that it is no bait. and than the adrenalin rush of attacking? and enjoying the others imagined misery? or a "good laugh"?

i personally have tricked a very skilled pvp'ler once into getting destroyed at a community goal. it was an amazing game session.

If you were aligned to a power the cmdr would have had a valid rp reason to attack, otherwise they just get another kill, not much else to it probably. Deciat has by far the highest population of gankers of any system in elite so you should decide before you go what your approach will be. If you have the right loadout you could put it to the test, otherwise I recommend solo mode, but only at deciat.

I play in open now. I was in a pg but left it back to open and glad l did....cos it was fun albeit nerve wracking and I thought a rebuy for sure.
The ship is a mule not armed ever just ferry's stuff about is all.

I don't wnat to defend anyone's playstyle here, just to be clear, personally i don't do these stuff but...Open play means you can meet someone (human players) else and since PvP is allowed in Open...it happens, that's it. People's motivations are not important here,it's a game mechanic, someone will do it someone else not.To be on the safe side people can always choose Solo play, not much difference overall.

Add him as a friend, and if he accepts, you can ask him yourself what he was trying to achieve.

Don't block him. If he failed to destroy your ship he's not a real threat, and you can tag him as an sworn enemy. That's way more fun.
That's the lamest excuse I've ever seen someone make in an attempt to preserve player killers' precious instancing. Just be blunt about blocking breaking blocked player's instancing instead of downplaying it and sugarcoating with roleplay. No need to hide this simple fact. This needs to be known for players to use however they deem necessary.

OP, block him if you want to block him.
