What' does 'Dangerous' means?

It probably has been asked before, but I cannot find it in Search function.
The game is called Elite Dangerous, but what does Dangerous actually mean?

Is it the rank, Dangerous?
Does it mean it's a dangerous and harsh universe out there?
or something else?

Aws far as I'm aware it refers to the fact that it is a "dangerous" time in the universe. Man is expanding rapidly and as we know from history that is not always a good thing!

I was always under the impression that it was a nod towards the classic Elite where 'Dangerous' was one of the highest ranks you could achieve in the game.

More seriously, my 2c - it is a name, that also coincides with the third to last title in original Elite. Maybe they were considering a new version of Elite in the future (Deadly). Maybe - as you said - they just liked the name as a reference to the Universe, which is quite different from the "mostly harmless" Earth ;).

Assuredly the galaxy is dangerous. She was already dangerous before with humans, but it is even more dangerous now with humans, Thargoïds and other races. Not forgetting Psykokow, Always on the lookout in one place or another

I remember something about their not being enough elite pilots to do everything the Elite want, so they have started looking at recruiting Dangerous pilots

There was a detail about most pilots never surviving long enough to reach the ranks of Deadly and Elite. It may have been written in The Dark Wheel.

The logical assumption is the original Galcorp combateer ratings system.

Dangerous pilots, while sure to make a first time pirateer think twice about a belly run sunside are pretty common, Deadly pilots are those already on the path to immortality (one way or the other) through bounty hunting and Navy seconding missions but Elite combateers. . well, they don't rub shoulders with mere mortals and you'll be lucky (or unlucky if they're looking for you) to personally run accross one in three lifetimes.

Other franchises just use the original name if enough time has passed.

Still say this should just be called simply, Elite

yeah, probably just call it Elite is enough.
