What happens with ED in far future

I'm not saying NMS is not good... IT IS good, but it's not my genre...
My main scope is to fly and control a ship in space and on planets. The environment needs to give me reason to go around and doing stuff.
NMS there's no piloting... Every single activity in the ship is a time sink and loading screen. Flight Model is too much arcady, it's like driving cars in Out Run. The game is all about collecting and farming.
I'm curious to see what they will deliver for VR but I guess I won't stick a lot around it until they develop a proper flight model.

I'll give it a try again in VR, just because I have VR and I have the game.

No Man's Sky should be the kind of game where I'd prefer to play it in Ironman mode, because it's at the beginning when such a game is at its most interesting, and perma-death greatly changes how you approach things in the game. When I started playing NMS, unfortunately, I felt it was so grindy at the beginning of the game, I can't see myself ever replaying it.

As for the future of Elite Dangerous, I figure we'll be see be able to land on non-life bearing worlds with atmospheres, walk around stations and ships, walking around the surface of worlds, and then finally landing on life-bearing worlds. Not necessarily in that order, and some may be combined, but we'll see that at the very least.

Later it turns out that
this grind is a tutorial, and then there are ways/tech to skip it, like improved launch thrusters or mining equipment so you just need to "brave through it".
And after Elite's grind, NMS' one is a breeze :p

Even with a better flight model I couldn't play it because of the graphics. I just don't like the cartoonish look, even if it's well done.
NMS is a weird game in this regard. Most of the time it feels like a cartoon, but I've been to systems and planets that look surprisingly photorealistic (and this on a humble PS4 Slim). These tend to be the exception rather than the rule, but it shows NMS could do "realistic" if they wanted to, but rather chose to do that funky 1960s book cover look.

Out of curiosity, what are your thoughts about Subnautica? It's a "cartoonish" game, but it's also incredibly immersive.

Howdy, I'm just curious what happens with ED in far future i.e 5 or even 10 years from now. Do you (FD) plan release game for offline play or self hosted server? To be hones... your servers will not stand online forever so what happens when you switch them off? Game will be killed / Game over?

I have worried about that from the moment I heard there would be no off line version.
For me Elite is one of those rare games I will definitely be playing for at least 10 years more, unless there is something on the market that can replace it.
Currently there is nothing remotely like Elite, and even when Star Citizen gets released it will not be able to replace the Elite experience.

Subnautica looks great, but I couldn't play it. I can't even say why. I have the same problem with Borderlands, Far Cry, etc. For some reason I just look at it and say 'nope, thanks' although I am convinced that they are good games.
I believe WoW was the first game I ignored because of the graphic style. It doesn't need to be ultra realistic though, I just want games to be dark and gritty.

David Braben said they take snapshots of the game every so often, and planned to release said snapshots in the event of the game ever shutting down, in response to a question about Archiving and saving of games for historical reasons.

Doesn't matter. In 10 years time most of the "majority demographic" playing ED that were kids in the 1980s and therefore nostalgic about Elite and appreciative of FD's efforts to give the franchise longevity will either be dead or have the reaction times of a lethargic sloth. I was 15 in '84 and in 10 years time I'll either be 62 or dead.... I imagine Braben will be close to 70 or dead....
We're at that age.

Doomed.

In about 2025 China purchases the bankrupt SC rights and attempts to release a carbon copy of ED, with a few modifications:

  • all Communist factions are adjusted in the BG to a state called 'flourishing'
  • names reflecting poorly on former or current Communist leaders, such as Ho Chi Min and Vlad the Bad, are removed
  • the opening theme music is the Chinese anthem, with an image of the current president's statue in the center of Jameson Memorial
  • All free space between the Bubble and Colonia is declared communist controlled and requires a permit to enter.
In 2026 the game is said to be "doing well in China, Russia, Cuba, N Korea and some south American countries", but an undisclosed group of hackers (read CIA) manage to undermine the BG to turn communist factions to capitalist. This leads to an upsurge in interest in the game in western countries, playing the game on i-phone XXXXXs and Samsung 16s.

Think about what you were playing ten years ago. Twenty years ago. What are you still playing after all that time?

For me, it's just a few:
Borderlands (10 yrs)
Jagged Alliance 2 (20 yrs)
Minecraft (10 yrs)

Even these three I don't touch that much. Only picked up Borderlands again thanks to the UI remaster.

I don't play any of my other space games today (WC, WC2, WC Privateer, WC3, Freelancer), mostly due to their age. Elite is an odd bird, of course--like Minecraft, it's still getting updated today and certainly has the potential to continue being updated for another five years, maybe longer if the economics make sense for FDev and players stay engaged.

What do I see in Elite in five years time if it's still here? I honestly can't say. Both Space Legs and Atmospheric Planets bring their own set of unique challenges to the design of the game, and I fully expect they're working on changes we're not expecting (but I really really hope they're not Powerplay 2.0, lol). I'm really looking for more variety in the day to day space activities that we do. The changes to mining are a wonderful example of this approach. Changes to exploration were also pretty good, but there's more room for improvement (still not enough engaging things to do outside of radio tuning). Changes to trade were even less--but as a trader, I struggle to figure out how to make that more interesting.

You mixed it up. Tencent already acquired a 9% stake in FD. By 2025 they'll have at least 90%. You got the other stuff right.

I plan to live forever, of course, but barring that I'd settle for a couple thousand years. Even five hundred would be pretty nice.

Same as any other online game.

You never get to play it again.

ED is not special.

I don't know why so many people think it is, but it isn't.

It's. Just. A. Game.

Before you say anything, no, FD owes us nothing. They have no obligation to provide a replacement product when they deactivate the server at any time, and they can pull support for any or no reason. Don't believe me? Read the EULA. You signed your rights away when you decided to start playing... Same as every online game ever.

It's just a fact of life with MMOs.

In the future, humans and Thargoids splice their genes together to become Humoids. The galaxy finally finds peace until Elite: Deadly, when the Humoids find a wormhole to the Andromeda galaxy.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Frontier have never said they'd release a version of the game that is compatible with offline play, but I think it's unlikely. They decided not to release an offline version initially because it was incompatible with their vision of the game and its mechanics (BGS, shared galaxy, community events, etc.) so I don't think they'll fork the project source now just to strip off all of those pieces. I'm not in their employ, so this is just me talking as a regular player though.

Given that, what will happen is that eventually when Frontier wants to move on, when the game is no longer popular, is not shifting enough units and/or store merch, they'll retire the servers and Elite will become unplayable. That's the deal with always online, games-as-a-service. You can play it only as long as the company decides it's worthwhile to keep the servers on.

So enjoy it while it lasts. :)

I thought DBOBE said ED isn't an MMO?
DB said a lot of things including releasing all the code if the lights go out......... do you believe him tho? I love listening to DB talk, his enthusiasm is infectious and he talks a great game but what he says and what FD produce is often very different.

That's a much more restrained version of my brutal description.
