What I want in VR is a virual keyboard.

Hi VR-users, Rift or Vive.

What I want in E:D VR is an ingame virtual keyboard, not an add-on or thirthparty.
A virtual keyboard for typing in : galaxymap or messages to my ingame friends

I own a Rift CV1 fitted with special VR-glasses; in RL I wear eyeglasses.
I tried lenses too but it's irritating; dry eyes.

Now I have to take off my headset, put on my glasses, try to type, take off my glasses and put on my headset.
Very annoying [knocked out]

It must be possible to add a virtual keyboard accessible by a keybordkey or joystick key.

What do you think ?

Yup, would be good although I've become pretty good at typing blind :D Also, rift runtime needs some overlay software to use EDEngineer and stuff. Don't want to compromise my ASW..

Yeah I think all us VR users do. You would think it would be included as standard in any VR game that involves typing but apparently FD don't see it that way - can't remember which thread I read it in now but they said that they have no plans to add, so I guess we have to hope that Oculus will add something.

A 'local' voice channel seems to be a better solution?

I've posted this before, but learning how to touch type should be a skill everyone that regularly uses a computer, let alone someone who plays ED in VR, should learn.

edit: I personally have no desire for virtual keyboard until adequate hand tracking and haptic feedback technology is available at consumer prices. Anything else is simply hunting and pecking, which I personally find both slow and frustrating.

Seems I've already repped you, but took note form your previous post about this, and have started on my way. Hand/finger tracking would be cool, but for an actual conversation, until there is also heptic feedback, I think touch-typing would still be a better solution.

Having said that, I do seem to get the urge to reach out and press a key when I look down at my throttle, and the keyboard is floating there...

Z...

I don't agree that advocating a 'learn to touch type' strategy is a solution for a lack of basic input mechanisms in VR.

Sure, touch-typing helps, but you still have to fumble for the keyboard, find the home keys and type your input. Some VR setups might not have the keyboard handy. Entering phonetic text via Voice Attack is an interesting idea, but it's still a workaround.

A simple hunt-and-peck virtual keyboard would be a great help to most - not only for the star map but also for replying to hello's/demands etc from other players by text comms.

Click in a field where text input is required, and a virtual keyboard appears at the bottom the screen. Look to point, select to enter each character, and return to close the keyboard and submit the entered text to the GUI.

It's not something FDEV will be doing soon if ever. I asked about it and got a straight no. It is something that will need to be built into the Oculus API.

At a higher level, it would be handy to have VR-trackable RL objects generally, like keyboards, mice, mobile phones, chairs and drink bottles. If the game/VR runtime knew where your chair was it would save a lot of recentering, and it would be easier to locate your stuff if eg your physical keyboard appeared in VR (even as a non interactive model) when the VR tracking sensor was triggered (eg by proximity or motion). If I had any hardware chops, I'd do a kickstarter for a Vive sensor button that could be stuck on to these kinds of objects.
