General / Off-Topic What I want to do

Well ... it's only taken me 40 years and 7 months,
but I now know what job I want to do.

I want to teach people to use computers.
I will be meeting with a careers advisor on Monday to discuss doing courses (I assume towards a qualification) and will ask about a qualification for teaching IT.

I have experience helping people and I know what I am doing (and how to teach people)
all I lack are qualifications.

But if anyone out there would like to consider me for a job teaching people to use a computer, contact me.

Buy a small desk. Take said small desk to your local branch of:

Put up a small sign saying "Tuition: half the price this store charges for it".

You'll be minted in a week.

OI!!!!!!!!!!!! No PC WORLD bashing!!!

*cough*... I was a Mastercare PC Services Engineer, then PC Services, The PC ServiceCall engineer, then this was the last straw... Tech Guy.

Senior field engineer for the west coast of Scotland and we did our best to get DECENT customer support once you navigated the call centres.. We got it up passed 90% first visit fix rate. Including software...

The problems with PC World is the drive for lower cost's and higher profits... shame as we had a great bunch of PC engineers who loved to fix problems and give tuition.. but the pressures on you were to cut your visit times.. which I have to say our team never did... Fix first of your part isn't right call the nearest engineers to see if they have it spare.. and so on and so on.. Loved the team...

Left a good 5 years ago now... worked in Ireland, London and Paris. as well as Scotland and loved it all, customers are always so nice..once you get past the fact you only see them when things are wrong..

Tuition is fairly simple thing to do, and again 1hour sessions is probably the most you should do in one sitting.. I enjoyed it..

Apologies to Alien for hijacking this thread a little but...

I worked for Mastercare PC Services, then PC Services, then PC ServiceCall as Technical Support Adviser (4 years), then Business Support Consultant (1 year) then Software Development Analyst (3 years) until leaving in 2003. I was based in the Nottingham Lenton Lane call centre throughout that time, but was sent doing repair/replacement work (your job) several times and trialled the delivery and installation service in Coventry when it was first launched.

So there's a distinct possibility that you and I have had several telephone conversations over the years.

So I am in an eminent position to "bash" PC World. Nothing was more fun than walking into the Nottingham branch and pretending to look at computers, getting a staff member all excited about trying to sell me the most expensive computer they had, then after 20 mins of nonsense that was very loosely related to the actual abilities of the PC, destroy them utterly by telling them exactly what was wrong with their sales pitch and letting the poor ****** know I worked for Mastercare.

And it doesn't matter WHAT it's called, it'll always be Mastercare.

You're going to Lavecon aint ya?? We can have a natter and see if we've blamed each other...

The thing about PC tutoring, the more qualification you have, the more likely you will get jobs... PC tuition leaflets on car windows at these kind of shops wouldn't hurt... but tuition is only as good as the organised effort behind it..

For examples... Using Windows is a dull thing to learn, first thing though.. using that mouse.....then they want to know how to scan and email and upload to facebook and use skype... ALL before they know how to turn the PC OFF..

So make sure you are able to give them hand outs etc... design and course and be prepared to be de-railed..

ITs something I considered doing on my own before I worked for my wife...

Ahhh PC World, the place you go to educate the staff.... Last time I was in there to buy a 10m network cable I had to spend 10 minutes explaining to the floor goon the difference between Cat 5 and Cat 6 network cables.

you have 6 cats?? I loved meeting new tech when it was bought... not so much having to work it out to fix it up for the customer.. NOT such a great image.. hold on why I read the manual.. *YEAH RIGHT LIKE THAT HAPPENED EVER*...

The Manual is purely to make the box heavier!!

Alien, first of all fantastic. To find a career that you really want to do, whatever the age, is an amazing thing. Helping people out is great for job satisfaction too.
Very best of luck.

I would suggest that you want to decide what your market will be. Dealing with Joe/Janet Public is a lot different from getting inside corporations. Not to say you can't do both but approaches would be very different.

Good Luck.

P.S. PC World are hopeless. Always were. ;)
